so, i'm thinking about becoming a high school teacher.
i'm finishing up a summer course at my community college and will be going to northeaster illinois university in the fall.
i've been thinking about majoring in biology and secondary education (instead of history and secondary ed.).
Teaching, as we know, was invented to make astrology look good. You can take it from there.
Teaching today has more to do with paper work tending to prove the good intentions and political correctness of the school board. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.
I like your pre-med idea. This is strictly personal - it's too late for me, I'm too old to do it. But if I were in your shoes, I'd go pre-med, then medical specializing in ophtamology. Think about it. Eye doctors rarely are called to the emergency room, rarely have emergencies of any kind, rarely deal with dangerous pathogens, perform a vital personal service for people especially the elderly, keep regular office hours, and make money like it was going out of style. And they don't have to deal with a room packed full of ankle biters for a pittance. What's there to think about?

I don't for a minute believe that personality changes as we age. I do believe that the expression of our personalities becomes more focused, honest, and mature as we age and, of course, that is a different phenomena entirely.
In fact, I've never heard a good definition of exactly what personality really is or is not.

my wife and i just left the wts after some 6 years of involvement (5 1/2 as baptized jws).
it has been a painful experience, i must tell you, but also one that has been filled with great joy and relief, too.

I suppose you are awaiting the unannounced visits by your former buddies, the elders. When I was leaving, I one time did what you report doing: I hid from them. As soon as they were gone, I thought to myself, "Look at the powerr you've given these ignorant people over you, they've got you hiding in your own home." And I promised myself I would never do that again, that I would take back every particle of power I had ever given the JWs. The next time they came like that, I opened the door and let them tell me all about how they wanted to talk to me about my lack of meeting attendance. Then I told them that attempting to ambush me in my own home by coming unannounced like a thief in the night was unacceptable and would be considered rude and crude by even worldly people. Then I told them they could not come in, that it was inconvenient for me, that when I was ready to discuss anything with them I would be certain to call them and for them not to contact me again. After I got that out of my mouth, one of them started to "overcome my objection" to their visit and I merely closed the door in their faces and turned the porch light off.
I eventually met with them, more to demonstrate who was holding the power than for any other reason, but all our meetings were done on my schedule which I made as inconvenient as I knew how (one of them worked shift and I discovered which shift he was on...you take it from there). When we had our first meeting, the first thing out of my mouth was, "I don't recognize that you have the moral authority to demand answers to your questions from me as long as you tolerate the presence of C.B. on the body of elders, as he is as guilty of "skinning the sheep" as any elder I have ever seen. Until you clean up your own house, you can come over and chat if you like, but we're not about to get into any deep discussion concerning anything about me while C.B. remains an elder in this congregation." Their reaction was one of the funniest things I've ever seen they looked at each other like someone who had loudly farted during the prayer at a funeral. It was priceless. My leaving the JWs was actually kinda fun because of stuff like that. I guess the difference was that I had a secret they didn't know about. They thought I gave a big shit about being DFed, when in fact I couldn't have cared less. The very second you want something from another human or group of humans, you make yourself their slave, and I had had enough of them and their BS.
Anyway, thank you so much for your story. I feel certain that many people will find it helpful in their own struggle to get out of the Borg. I hope you will hang out here with us for awhile and have some fun and do some more good for others who suffer from the heavy yoke and the hard labor of being a Watchtower Slave.

In point of actual fact, JWs regard "their" young people as an interesting and literal form of "wild" life; something that must be carefully, but not too obviously controlled.
It has been a very long time since I was a teenager, a very long time indeed. And I can say with no fear of contradiction that the regularly scheduled, much awaited WT articles about "our" youth are exactly the same as they were when I was a part of this form of wildlife. Take a look at WT articles from, say 1962, about the subject topic and compare it with the current one and see if there is any meaningful difference. That should give you a clue about how much they really care about "their" youth, i.e. not at all. The stresses and challenges faced by young people today are, IMO, vastly more difficult than they were when I was in high school. For instance, I never once saw, was offered, heard about, or thought about drugs in high school. I was most definitely interested in beer, but heroin, coke, amphetamines, serious drugs like that? Nada. It was sex and beer that I was interested in.
So, Blondie, as you allege, in the matter of the WTBTS and its interest in "their" youth we find the same kind of sneering, cynical hypocrisy as we find in all else they preach. It's rather disgusting, isn't it?
And the most disgusting thing about the JWs? Here they are, certainly familiar with the charge that they take care of widows and orphans and they're sitting on bales of money, and do we ever see that they lift one little finger to help the youngish sister with three small children who lives alone because her husband left her over the JW issue? She can hardly clothe these children, they grow so quickly, or should I say out-grow? They must be fed, housed, educated. And how, in today's society, does this uneducated (likely) sister prevail against the peer pressure her children will meet to drink, use drugs, engage in unprotected sex and a host of other societal ills? Do we see the society doing anything to help this sister and the thousands like her? Hell no! Any decent church would have burned the JW Governing Body ages ago. What a bunch of bastards. Grrrrrrrrr.
