i'm quite interested in this subject at the moment.

i was reading that in some cultures when the stories, myths and traditions began to be written down the stories etc underwent transformations as they were now accessible for critique and for moral judgements to be added.. i'd like to hear your thoughts leo and anyone else who has anything to share/discuss.

What I need to do is go back back over some of the old discussions on JWN/JWD regarding the subject because I realize that there have been loads.

One thing I would question is the idea that there is a truth waiting to be discovered. I wonder if it is that we want to make a truth for ourselves instead that drives us to see a unifying truth in the bible as whole. If this is the case (that we want ot make a unifying truth for ourselves) then isn't it possible to see that the bible has many truths? This is what I see Jesus saying

What religion would you recommend for those who want to leave the WTS?

the damage that the wts has caused me leads me to mistrust all men and religion.. i trusted these men from the wts .

i gave up 35 years of my life to find out that the wts is just a printing and real estate corporation disguised as a religion.

my reccommendation and this is what I try to do is - think with my body not just with my mind. And remember that your body and brain interact with the environment and change it too (the changes of course work both ways). To me this is "religion" and what we call "divine". In this state one can be in any religion or environment

thanks Behemot - I'll check those.

the origins of language are so fascinating. In passing we have had some references (in my study of Attic Greek) to Linear B and that this language was the parent of Indo European languages including Greek. I don't know if Hebrew is considered an indo European language and whether or not it is similar to linear A or B or both.

I do remember Leo saying something about Hebrew being associated with Ugaritic (sp) but I may have got this wrong

What is your guess/opinion?

My personal opinion is that the first written accounts are much more recent than we would like to think. Probably less than 1000 BCE.

thanks J Woods. This is my feeling too that a systematic writing of oral traditions took place from round about 1000 BCE. But I think that before that there were writings but these were not particular to what we have come to see as the bible. Perhaps there were writings (on pottery for example) from an older parent language. I understand that this parent language originated from what we now know as the Steppe's of Russia.

However I'm not arguing against any divine status that may be attributed to biblical oral stories/writngs.

Do you do any volunteer work? If so, what?

I do a few hours a week at a volunteer centre helping people find paid/voluntary. When I finish studying I want to get into something political/civil rights.

Voluntary work is fun - we do quite a lot of socializing

a couple weeks ago in the news in the sacramento, california area several billboards advertising atheism were spray painted and ripped apart with graffiti scribbled on the advertising.

things like " jesus died for you !

" and other threatening slogans were written on these billboards .

I feel that now I am without God, the moral standards I live by are absolute, I cannot go against them without denying who I am. I would have to become a different person,worse than I am now, and I do not want to do that.

thats a nice way of putting it - this is the way I'm heading too

With Heavy Heart

sometimes we find a place and it feels like home, it is accepting and understanding.. then, sometimes, that place becomes cold and inhospitible.. when i first joined here i felt i have found a good place.. people like narkissos, leolaia and others impressed me with their knowledge of scripture and motivated me to learn more for myself.. others touched me with the stories of their pan and hurt, pain and hurt that i was feeling also.. i don't think i ever offended anyone with my views on christianity and if i have i sincerly apologise for that was not my intent.. but things change and sometimes home isn't home anymore.... this site had been invalable to me for my understanding what is wrong with the jw's relgion and the wt, it has strengthened my faith and belief.. here i found people of religon, faith and love.. here i found agnostics and athiest that challenged my views and made me question, they made me a believe via reason and not "blind faith".. for that, i thank all of you, especially the "jeff's" ( ak and alltime), i also say a special thanks to leavingthewt, many of his posts made me feel welcomed and made me think and be a better person.. chalam, bts, dd and so many others, i thank you from my heart for your kind words over these many months.. people like mary and sylvia and so many others filled my heart with love with their stories.. all the best to you my dear brothers and sisters.. .

when atheists attack the bible and God they often have to resort to setting up caricatures of both. I have seen this art practiced here very often. One response is to set up a caricature of your own.
