meditation as often advocated here rightly questions the hierarchical dualities generated by mental activity, such as (or, perhaps, all boiling down to) "good vs. bad" -- hierarchical inasmuch as -- would you have guessed?
-- one is supposed to be better, more valuable than the other; one is definitely to be pursued and the other shunned.
The first will be the last is the very principle of walking. Duality in motion.
I suppose the queston is to do with the what we are looking at or considering and from what angle etc which decides our perspective in the now here or the there. In other words try remaining fluid and in motion mentally.

most kids that grew up "in the truth", that i knew of did not stick around.
and if they did, they were "in the truth" in name only.
they played both sides and were considered "weak".. do you know of entire families still in without any defection??
i too only know of one entire family that are still in - whats more they're all in fulltime service and have left a trail of devastation behind them. Mum is 3th generation jw and all her family from way back have been faithful.

Usually quite passionately lol - i tend to need that impetus to get me thinking around an idea. Have to kick start my brain.
How about today, do you react with anger, defensiveness or hostility when your beliefs undergo challenges?If people's perception is that I am reacting with hostility and anger then I'd hope that they'd point it out to me. At the same time a different individual may feel that I am being merely passionate and not hostile.
for those of you who espouse the philosophy that one needs to discard who we "think" we are and embrace the "reality" of who we really are, what if, there is a divine purpose to our miniscule existence in the here and now and that purpose is to experience the pull of opposite forces (duality), and you are missing it by not allowing yourself to experience the ego self?
what if you are missing the whole purpose of this pull of pain and joy by trying to suppress it or place yourself outside of it?

Most days, I love humanity and nature too, except for on the days when I hate it (often coinciding with PMS days, strangely enough!) This too is awareness of the cycles of life.

Ironically, it's the lack of exclusivity to this way of thinking that draws me to it.
It's universal. It's real. No books or external revelations are needed to experience awareness. Tolle's book IS NOT the answer. It's just a way of explaining that which has always been there.
NVR The struggle for existance has also always been there and that too is universal. Which brings me back to the start of journey-on's thread - re to allow the struggle for ourselves, to engage with it and learn how to live.
That's why I feel that we need to allow our stories, our indiviuality our idiosyncracies, our differences. We come out of our struggles realising that we are not alone and that we are supported by the world around us.
I do practice eckhart tolle's pointers but with my own modifications. For instance not getting lost in the story or becoming paralysed by it, or being defined by it - but on the other hand its also possible to become lost in the oness story.

I like to remain open to possibilities and there are enough mysteries to keep me seeking. I have come to love humanity and nature.

Seeing living examples of the breakdown of the brain's processes made me question if this "conscious awareness" of all, that we experience is the true self? Is this idea of our true nature just another artificial construct of our language based mind, as Narkissos has pointed out? When we are no longer consciously aware, when we can no longer understand or use language, when we can no longer sense the world around us, yet we still exist, who are we then? What is our purpose then?
In the above scenario its the people around him that sustain his life and identity - if he was on his own he would die.
there is purpose for an individual in such a situation through the people around him. the medical profession may be able to repair what he has lost etc. But without those functions and the people around him he wouldn't exist for very long.
