Smurfs

my oldest son who is now 18 y/o remembers when he was not allowed to have a crash test dummy toy because of a statement printed in the wt magazine when he was a child... he never forgot.

i could not remmeber so i went back and looked it up and sure enough it was mentioned in the rag not by name but by the description of the toy.

this week i bought him some crash test dummy toys off ebay, i am sure he won't have as much fun with them today as he would have many years ago but better late then never.

Sheesh...I had no idea that the Furby's were ever under JW scrutiny. Of course, I had left by that point, so I probably didn't care any more.

I do remember that there were several elder's wives at our congregation who just weren't happy unless they were making sure that the local children weren't just absolutely miserable. They would find something that the kids liked and then try to prove that it was evil. [8>] What a bunch of killjoys!

That reminds me of an old 'Saturday Night Live' sketch where Dan Aykroyd was playing Sigmund Freud and Lorraine Newman was playing his daughter Anna. She was telling him about one of her dreams which featured some obviously sexual imagery and after he spent a few seconds contemplating it all, told her, "Sometimes a banana is just a banana, Anna." LOL!

I doubt it. The Dateline site has shown that pre-emption for at least a week or more. I'm still a little surprised that there is no mention of the 28th episode yet. Hmm...

Gosh, the Smurf memories came flooding back when I read your post.

To the best of my knowledge there was never anything printed in either the Watchtower or Awake that specifically mentioned the Smurfs. I, however, was encouraged by my Mother to write the Society a letter requesting further information about whether or not the Smurfs were evil little boogers. They wrote me back what I considered a very snippy little letter (I was about 10 at the time, so it might not have been *that* snippy) urging me to do some research on my own, pointing me towards their publications, natch.

While refusing to comment on the Smurfs directly, I thought it very funny that they did mention wood nymphs in their reply to me. They also mentioned that the word "Smurf" was a copywrighted name. I found that very strange at the time, but knowing what I know about them now I guess they were just trying to cover their "smurfs."

I saved that letter for years but after looking for it again recently, I can't seem to find it anywhere. What I wouldn't give to be able to get my hands on that thing today! ::sigh::

Why do the 'friends' believe Elders over Experts

this is something i've been wondering about lately due to personal experiences.

my mother and stepfather (she's a jw, he is not) have been having some marital problems of late and instead of seeking out the advice of a marriage counselor or some similar specialist in the field, they have chosen to seek help through one of the elders in her congregation.

i'm completely surprised by this, yet i know i shouldn't be.

I'm completely surprised by this, yet I know I shouldn't be. Why in the world would you go to an elder for help with something of this nature. I mean, if you've got a problem with your heart you see a cardiologist, not a podiatrist. Normally, it wouldn't be my any of my business, but she's constantly asking for my input. Since she knows how I feel about the Witnesses, I'm completely baffled as to how to deal with this situation. Anyone have any ideas?

ok- lately i have been reading more and more posts and i see hildabinger and mystikool replying to posts supporting the wts.

are they active jw's counting time for repling to posts... am i correct?

is that why hilda's name is crossed out?

If they are perfect 100% pro Jehovah's Witness, then why are they posting on a web site not approved by the Watchtower Society?

I've been wondering that as well. I remember back when I was an active JW, I'd have taken a bullet before even typing this URL into my browser let alone spending hour upon hour replying to 'apostates'.

Have a sign that says "Please kiss my ass" to flash at them when they flash the "please return to seat" sign at you.

I know this isn't really on topic, but this just annoyed the mess out of me when I was still active. I remember sitting through those endless sessions as a young child and finally convincing Mom to let me make a bathroom run...anything to escape the tedium. No sooner would I hit the hallway than Brother Self Righteous would flash one of those precious little signs in my direction.

Of course, being the perfect little JW that I was, I would feel horribly chastised and RUSH back to my seat so that I could enjoy the fine spiritual bulls, er, food!

Besides, the only part of the assemblies that even caught my attention were the dramas and they were so darned heavy-handed that it was absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to not get the point.

My letter to the editor

just a few moments ago, i emailed a letter to the editor.

i hope it gets published, and i hope that some of you will also email your newspaper regarding the news.

I didn't mean to suggest that there was anything wrong with larc's letter to the editor. I'm just concerned that this whole issue won't make the impact that we all hope it will.

I agree with you totally, though...even if only one person reads it and it makes a difference then it was more than worth the effort.

BTW, I'm still trying to creep out of the 'lurkdom' phase so if you guys could overlook any of my glaring mistakes here for a bit, I'd be most appreciative.

I'm afraid that I have to agree with you on this one. As much as I would love to see the Society brought to their knees by this latest abuse of power, I just don't feel that this story is going to hang around long enough to make an impact on those who need to hear it the most. ::sigh::
