  The Truman Show

  i think everyone who likes the truman show will like this link whether you are religious or not.

  i am not religious but open minded.

  when i first saw the truman show, i was struck by it's deeper under tones and the philosophical questions it raises.

  Very interesting link, ballistic. I had never even considered the possiblity of a religous subtext in the movie, but I'm not really all that deep.

  A few years back some friends and I were staying in Destin, FL and discovered that the town that The Truman Show had been filmed in was about an hour away. We took a bit of a road trip and visited this amazingly beautiful community called Seaside, FL. (http://www.seasidefl.com) It was incredibly surreal seeing all of these settings from the movie. We walked through there for what must have been hours gawking at all of the architecture and landscaping.

  JW's and drinking

  is it just me, or is alchohol consumption at parties and vacations virtually an unwrittten rule of jw-culture?.

  when i was in, i did not drink, and i still don't.

  i often felt almost ostracized for this by my jw associates.

  I never saw any JWs drinking at a 'get together.' In retrospect I'm sure it was done, but was done discreetly enough so as not to draw any undue attention.

  I do remember one instance that got particularly ugly, though. At a Witness wedding reception held at a local hotel several of the brothers and sisters got more than a little plowed. Seems that the caterers were running behind with the food and it wasn't ready on schedule. The open bar was quite operational, though, and quite a few of the brothers got drunk as skunks showing quite a bit of a 'worldly' attitude. Not only were adults drinking, but I vividly recall seeing several underage kids with glasses in hand. This was probably twenty years ago and whenever the subject of moderation was brought up at the hall, the conductor always felt the need to bring up this incident as an example.

  I think you've got a good point there.

  Like you, I was never a drinker as a Witness and still am not. Just don't care for it, but I certainly don't begrudge others enjoyment of it. However, whenever we would get together with others for a camping trip or something of that type, alcohol was almost always a part of the entertainment...beer mostly or wine coolers. I can't honestly say that I ever saw anyone drinking hard liquors.

  I honestly think that they drink for the same reasons that many alcoholics drink - to escape from the harsh realities of their day to day existence.

  Cult Sacrifices Child

  taunton, massachusetts - a religious sect leader who said he was following instructions from god when he let his infant son slowly starve to death was convicted of murder friday and sentenced to life in prison without parole.. the jury took 6 1/2 hours to find 29-year-old jacques robidoux guilty of first-degree murder.

  his son, samuel, was fed only his mother's breast milk for 51 days and died in 1999, three days shy of his first birthday.. during the trial, robidoux said his sister had received a vision from god telling the couple to stop feeding the baby solid food.. robidoux choked back tears as he described how samuel went from a healthy, 10-month-old boy taking his first steps to a baby so withered he could no longer even crawl.

  his tiny bones were visible, and he cried in pain.. "his cry wasn't a normal baby's cry," robidoux testified.

  Prosecutors used as evidence against Robidoux a journal in which he documented the boy's slow death.

  Let me get this straight...This man let his child slowly starve to death over a period of 51 days and then kept a diary detailing how the child was suffering? I find it almost impossible to believe that it took a jury six and a half hours to come to the conclusion that this monster was guilty!

  I think I'm going to cry. This is one of the most hideous things I've ever heard.

  Name some must have rock records

  i've spent a lot of time on allmusic.com and it amazes me how much nirvana is mentioned when the reviewers rate other albums.

  so its a no brainer that nirvana's work should probably have a place in every rock collection, but what are some other albums every rock fan should listen to if not own.

  Jesus Christ Superstar - the original recording done before the show had ever been on the stage. Great album all around!

  One of my personal faves has always been Carol King. Love the Tapestry album.

  I'm also a sucker for just about anything by Carly Simon.
