Loved the bit with the binoculars! We used to do that, also. It was always fun getting a close up view of your fellow brothers and sisters. I spent the better part of an afternoon session doing that during one assembly...until I happened upon someone staring back at me! LOL!

Spaz,
Did you mean you weren't going to be posting any more on this subject or not posting any more...period? Don't be so quick to leave. After all, differences in opinion is what makes this place worth coming to.

The WTS and WALT DISNEY
by Sangdigger init has recently occured to me after visiting one of americas largest family theme parks that there are similarities between the wts and disney.
we all know how the wts puts much emphasis on appearances.
eg...men must wear suits, ties, no beards, no hair touching the ear or collar, no pants for women, nothing that would appear "wordly" (for those of you not informed, "wordly" refers to anyone not a jw).

No problem. I frequent that website (http://www.snopes.com) because they have so much great information on so many different subjects. They've got a whole Disney section that goes into the myths and urban legends surrounding some of the animated films. It's a really great read.
There's also a really great book called Inside the Mouse (I think) that details what it is like behind the scenes of such a massively large operation...really makes you stop and think. Also a great read.

I won't cut my beard!
by caballoSentado insome time ago i learned of the un affair & saw the truth...i am fading away now so i have not been attending meetings regularly for some time, specially the book study.
two days ago, i learned that a letter was read in my book study regarding personal attire, and it was said that one should not grow a beard (this letter was not read in any of the other book studies).
they say you are not a good christian, you are not spiritual, if you grow a beard.

What I have learned is JWs judge way too much on outward appearance and not on the heart condition of people.
Too, too true. I have never seen a more appearance-obsessed group of people in my entire life. Being raised a Witness and having broken free, I struggle constantly with judging people based solely on their appearance. I don't want to, honestly, but it was such a part of my JW upbringing that it's almost second nature now. I am working on it, though.

When I was younger, I remember looking around trying to spot the adults who had fallen asleep. There seemed to be on average about four to six for each session. There was also the 'spot the parent about to beat the crap out of their kids' game in which you would see a full-grown adult dragging a child out by one arm, the kid screaming all the way. Truly sad.

A NEW METHOD OF PREACHING!
by Mary ineveryone remember a few years ago with the gb decided that the rank and file witness just wasn't bugging the hell out of enough people because no one was ever home saturday morning?
they came up with the brainstorming idea to approach people in parking lots!!!
(ya, that goes over reeeeeeeal well)......as if going to the person's home to tell them about their imminent death wasn't bad enough, now ya gotta tell them when they're out shopping!

Hi dustrabbit,
Nah, I don't have a problem with the ring (I wear a few myself now that I'm out) but most of the Witnesses I've known would see that as evidence of his 'worldliness.'

Nice looking kid, but he just doesn't look like a JW to me. I know, I know...what does a JW look like?
Since I was raised in the 'troof' there's something in the photo that strikes me as odd. He's wearing a ring, on, as Homer Simpson would say, 'his main finger.' It was a distinct no-no where I came from for a man (especially a young single man) to wear any sort of jewelry other than a class ring. Have their uptight attitudes relaxed that much?

It looks like a pitiful attempt to put on a happy face after the drubbing they took from Dateline last month. "Love your children" indeed!
