Did anyone see the YouTube video Hamilcarr posted on this thread. Towards the end the man giving the talk makes an illustration about a guy who had OCD and decided to kill himself, so he shot himself in the head. The poor fellow didn't die, but he just so happened to blow away the part of his brain that made him OCD. The brother then stretched this already flimsy illustration to point out why college is so bad and JW youth should not attend. He says that while some can survive college, not all will, just as some shoot themselves and die, while others shoot themselves and cure their OCD. Don't do it, he warns. It was stupid illustrations like this that I just couldn't follow that made me laugh and doubt at the same time.

The Revelation book

I am sure there are a bunch of kids who are having nightmares because of that book. I remember being terrified whenever we studied it (the first time it was studied I was about 11 or 12, maybe 13) I really can't remember how old I was when we studied Revelations the first time. I do remember that we would have some sweet "parties" afterwards, maybe to alleviate the horrible pictures and images of dying we had talked about for one hour. Too bad they cancelled book studies. The org. really does not want the "friends" to associate without their close supervision.

Wedding Talks
by Alexia ina few weeks ago, there was a thread started on jw funeral talks and how horrible they are, but what about those wedding talks?.
talks that has nothing to do with the couple itself, but an advertisement about how wonderful marriage in jehovahs organization is.
*eye roll * the worst is when they have to bring up sex in the marriage in a wedding talk *barf*.

Do JWs miss having large parties, pot-lucks, etc?
by navytownroger inas has been stated before, large congregational get-togethers, cook-outs, baseball games, etc are now greatly discouraged by the society.
back in the 80s in san diego we had parties, night-time beach bonfires, pool parties and frequent restaurant meals with 10+ people.
do current jws seem to miss these sorts of social activities??

I was wondering the same thing and started a topic with this very question. How sad and depressing, no wonder I am the happiest I have ever been in my life since I stopped attending the meetings.

Congregation Get-Togethers: In or Out?
by TreadClimberMaster ini was reading redpill2006's post and i noticed that some mentioned that get-togethers or parties have been largely discouraged.
i stopped attending meetings in 2003/2004 and i remember my congregation still had get-togethers, although they were few and far between.
they were not completely discouraged though, has this changed?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Did being a JW lady give you low self esteem because of dating?
by TreadClimberMaster ini remember the years that i was a witness and dating was so stressful!
i really never dated, because i truly believed that dating was reserved for marriage purposes only.
i used to think i could never attain or hope to attain to the level of perfection that certain "brothers" wanted.

Hello All! I guess it just always pissed me off the way the society is so geared toward men. It always seemed like men could get away with murder, when a sister would be labeled and judged for the slightest offense or perceived offense. I realized that it was a waste of my time in my mid-twenties and married a good wordly man. He's pretty cute too!

I used to think I could never attain or hope to attain to the level of perfection that certain "brothers" wanted. I had low self-esteem, felt ugly and undesirable and all because I could not find a JW husband. Also, if anyone knew you were a single sister they automatically assumed you were desperate for the attention of any brother and would therefore look down upon you. I could go on, but it really pisses me off when I think about how I tore myself up over complete losers...you know the theocratic ones that every sister dreams of, that brother who works part-time at Costco stocking shelves...YUCK!

Witness Kids - Scared silly by the WTBTS
by misspeaches ini wonder if anyone else who grew up as a jw can relate with me on this subject.. i grew up hearing stories of 'faithful brothers & sisters' being tortured to a point where they were almost dead.
all they had to do to be set free was renounce jehovah and their religon.
the stories i heard of torture were graphic in nature and to this day i can not handle hearing about torture or watch it being portrayed in movies.

I do remember that story. What about the one about the brother tied to a tree and left to die and ants were poured over him.

I still have nightmares about being tortured for my "religion." I really hate the way the WTS glamorizes people who have died because they "stood up for the truth." It is truly sickening!
