I floated around behind several churches for a while and it gave me closure from the JWs to have different worship experiences. I took the belief-o-matic quiz on www.belief.net and tried the Unitarians and Quakers (both open-minded) before finding Reform Judaism. I have been attending Torah Study for 6 months with no pressure to convert or join in worship services. I now describe myself as an Agnostic who likes to argue with the Jews. Try out everything that sounds interesting and don't let anyone pressure you.

It's ridiculous how some people can't just mind there own business and let people be. I'm glad you aren't letting whoever it is bully you around.

Most humiliating...
by Igot2bme ini was at home this morning typing up a couple legal documents for some general contractors to sign that were going to be doing some tree removal on my property, when i get a visit from a sister in the hall i used to attend.
she usually stops by at least once a week.
i haven't been to meetings for over a year now and didn't attend memorial this year, but she was quick to remind me how i missed out.

The witnesses believe that you have to be 'simple' not to believe the way they do. Obviously, no one has explained it to you correctly before. They don't realize that shallow thinking is required to accept JW doctrine.

I'm starting to rethink my position on organized religion
by sabastious ini have been one to demonize organized religion because i had attached an "enemy tag" to them at some point in my life.
when i started going through the reasons why i consider it an "enemy" i figured something out.. organized religion's are just large dysfunctional groups.
my family is a smaller dysfunctional group and i worked for a business that was also just a small dysfunctional group.

I believe that being involved with an organized religion (not a cult) can be good for a lot of people, IF they never lose sight of the fact that they do not NEED the religion. Use religion to enhance your own lifestyle (family friends, holiday events, etc) Don't get caught up with the 'you need to be saved!' God-hype.

Want to quit Bible study
by confusedstudent inhi i was just looking for some advice.
i have been studying with the jw's for over a year now, and attended 2 memorials and the district/assembly conventions.
at first, and up until very recently i truly believed what i was learning was the truth.

Step away for a month. No meetings or studies and no 'spiritual' conversations with the JWs. Now that your hubby is back, you will truly see if that hole that the JWs filled still exists. Also, you will truly see if you miss the religion, instead of the 'friends.' If you are supposed to be a witness, a month away won't change that.

Wife wants me to read Secret of Family Happiness, any suggestions?
by insearchoftruth inhello, have been on this board for a few years, and now my wife is asking me to read the subject book with her.
.
it seems pretty 'vanilla' in my scan through it, seems to lift up the male headship issue a few times and of course the cure to all ill is to 'attend christian meetings'.. am still working to fully open her eyes, anything in here i can use that may help, any conflicts with current doctrine i could possibly point out??.

You could suggest that you each read each chapter independently, and then discuss it together. The JW logic requires the 'read the paragraph/ answer the written question' format to maintain any form of coherence. Also, make sure you stay on topic and encourage her to express her beliefs and not to change them. This may reduce her defensiveness. She will either 1) stop 'studying' with you and think of another way to convert you, or she will 2) learn to discuss and debate instead of just reading someone else's words to express her own beliefs.

My brother went to a bachelor party and wasn't allowed in because he was not an MS or elder and the jerk at the door told him he wasn't welcome. Later, that same guy wrecked his car driving home drunk. The elders called my brother in, said he was lying about not attending the party, and disfellowshipped him for getting all those fine spiritual brothers drunk and encouraging them toward worldly actions. We were shocked!! We shouldn't have been. My dad isn't an elder...

"There are many Messianic Jews who understand that Jesus is God, Messiah, Lord, Savior, King." Yes, but Messianic Jews are not Jewish, they are Christians. Obviously, if someone truly imitates Jesus, who was Jewish, they will look like a Jew. But, a Jew who accepts Jesus as the messiah is a Christian. In fact, that is exactly what 1st century Christians were, Jews who decided that Jesus was the messiah and followed his words. It is disingenuous to suggest that the Messianic Jews or Jews for Jesus represent the beliefs of Judaism. Everyone is free to worship, or not, in any way they choose. But you cannot be both Jewish and Christian. It is an either/or situation.

July 2011 Awake, LMAO @ Cover
by Yan Bibiyan inmag available here.
setting is obviously in the "new system", i'd say quite some time after the big a. everything looks neat and clean, so it can't be just few months or even years after the big slaughter.. let me point out few things that made me laugh:.
every effort was made to depict natural materials, but you see leather straps with metal rivets holding the picnic basket lids.

Those images remind me of the planet in Hitchhiker's Guide to the universe where they shipped off the useless third of their population (consisting of hairdressers, insurance salesmen, personnel officers, telephone sanitisers and the like) to a different planet. The new colony couldn't sustain any sort of society, but their telephones (windows) were clean and everyone had a nice hairstyle. - from an ex-JW who went to beauty school instead of law school.
