This a very poorly and vacuously argued- if that what it is - piece of journalism. There is no statement at all of the UK laws, yet they rant against them, not at all conducive to informed debate.
The journalist picks one cause celebre, Tony Martin and then thinks she shows that we in the UK want firearms, well most in the UK simply do not. I know of no one here who would like to carry a firearm, no one, including the most Police Officers I have met.
A friend of mine was a firearms officer in the Metropolitan Police , his point of view was only very highly trained officers should carry guns, and he certainly does not want to have one at his private residence.
If Americans believe that the arguments adduced here are representative of the way most of us in the UK think, they are being misled badly. Some people do , yes no question, but most do not.
The journalist clearly has has a pro gun agenda and is being disingenuous in her argument.

In what foreign countries is it acceptable by JWs to have a beard?
by JimmyPage inafter seeing the danish movie "worlds apart" and being told on this board that it is acceptable in some foreign countries, how common is it and where?.

are we talking brothers or sisters here? I think we are talking about sisters here as they do not give talks from the platform.
In the possible event this topic is about brothers, i used to have terrific fun when i arranged talks in inviting the occasional speaker, who i knew had beard to give a talk, watching the obvious discomfort of some in the congregation more than made up for heat i received.
In the UK it is my experience that it is another no no

Hey aligot,
Thanks for your support, i have been to France many times and found French people courteous and kind, my kids love it too. Mind you driving in Paris is strictly for the brave!
I am one of the many, often silent, Brits who think we should be more Euro centric.

I do not agree with Aligot at all, we are not all insular, at all far from it An indication of this is the London itself which has many nationalities residing there, it is the 6th biggest French City!

This is a typical argument put forward by the use of a non sequitur to advance a spurious argument. Some women are pretty and are self interested, and like the guys with aren't? This sort of latent misogyny does not reflect what happens for most people and merely serves to perpetuate certain myths.

My older son has a 1st in Medical Biochemistry from Kings College London, which is a world class university. He knows the pitfalls of doing government funded research. His pariticular specialism is stem cell research; this an area where the discoveries and therapies derived therefrom are going to dramatically alter the way we live and the disease we can treat.
That being said the way the UK treats its scientists is poor and needs reviewing urgently.
The UK and the US governments frequently champion scientists but pay lip service to giving them the continuity of funding to enable them to have job security that is needed to see their efforts reach fruition.
The training science based degrees is without doubt a good basis to build a career in many and diverse fields of employment.
BTW thanks cameo for brightening my day, what is your area expertise?
