Why do most people not think?

i have just had a long conversation with a dear friend, and we came to the same conclusion most people do not really think.. he is 75 and is fizzing with ideas, got a phd at 60. in fractals( no have little idea what they are).

for instance it was and is blindingly obvious to me that the price of oil would drop, it has a little.

the reasons are simple and i am prepared to discuuss that if you want.. i have observed in relationships recently, my own included, that we ignore the what is happening, and often to our, and our familie's long term benefit.

I can understand where you are coming from totally i am child of that era and remember the parties etcetra. i did have a great time,then became a JW, thinking processes then reduced sadly. I hope you are having a great time now.

No your initial post did not put any barriers to my thinking. I merely believe that we have alot more conttol over our actions than you seem to be suggesting. I had in mind my own cicumsatnces and how had i thought about it more i would have acted sooner

Interseting points about meditation, i have thought i might try it, so i think i will and see what happens,I love trying diffrent things

My hero

in my life i've had a lot of people i looked at as heroes: guitar players, athletes, etc.

but i have a new hero.

a different kind of hero for me.

Khaled Hosseini, the author of A Thousand Splendid Suns. Saw him April 10th this year, a very gentle and kind man. He gave a flavour of what it is like in Afghanistan. Talked about arriving in the USA with nothing and how his family worked to better themselves.

Being shunned by JW's who you know have done worse than you

okay-here's one i was thinking about the other day-after reading some of your posts.

have you ever been shunned by a jw who you know was doing (or had done) some really devious things?

for instance when i was df'd the first person to give me the five minute long evil eye at the grocery store was a sister who had five children by two different fathers and a sixth child who was molotto (she was white) and she insisted that she had no idea why he came out so dark skinned.....she was never df'd.

I am being shunned by some am not even disfelowshipped - yet. This whole shunning business is about control and is highly corrosive of family relationships.

The way that they are treating you is horrid and hypocrical

Do people not want to think because of laziness? Low self esteem or lack of confidence? It may be none or it may be all of the above.

It can be any one or a combination of the above i believe.

I do not also think that because a person has a high IQ that he will think more, merely that that they have the capacity to think more deeply.

Thinking requires choice by people to do it. Not thinking about things much is a choice too, it does however narrow one's options.

Has anyone read the books by Edward de Bono on lateral thinking? They present a interesting insight on how we can improve our thinking, in certain ways

Try meditation techniques, and you'll realize just how NOT in control of ourselves we really are.

I have not attempted meditation, but i honestly beleive we are more control of our actions than we think that we have..

I have illustrated this in my own personal choices, the result of alot of thinking through the consequences. It was the inaction that caused me the greatest problems

The friend to whom i referred at the top of this thread is very enjoyable company because he does think and have ideas, i find him immensely interesting. People who do not think i find hard work.

Ideas and thinking can be so liberating particularly if they lead to action. Inaction only causes us to ossify become complacent.

Most great theories and inventions came about by people who thought.

Hi HS

You were one of the posters i had in mind when putting up this thread . You like to challenge people to think things through, which i enjoy.

On a more philosophical level, I have found to be frank, that often the happiest people are those whose lives are free of the tangle of deep 'thinking'.

Up to a point this is true, but when they do have to live in the real world or have someone do it for them, as my soon to be ex wife will find out.

Why do i believe oil prices will fall (how much i don't know though i suspect not alot short term)?

Those countries like China that are creating a false market by thier subsidising of the oil prices. The higher the price goes the more they have to pay in subsidies, there will as is now happening ,come a point where they can or will not bear the cost . Secondly people either can not or will choose not to pay the higher prices, therefore they will moderate thier consumption .Wtiness how everywhere large capacity vehicles are becoming passe'

Demand therefore falls or remains the same. Higher prices have encouraged some countries to increase production . The demand supply curve shifts, prices drop. Just like last time

I'll give a personal example of not thinking things through. I like many here remained in the wts for far to long ignoring the facts, like many here. Now at some point when we thought about it we left. I therefore for one became happier.

I am also married at the moment to a very kind and gentle lady, have 3 great kids. Trouble is when i left the wts we lost what held us together, therefore the strains the were already in our relationship gradually came out. We chose to ignore those problems, for the children . If we had thought about thought about things we would have been happier sooner, it was easy not to. The result i am sure would be no different except that we would have more time to explore other realtionships and be ourselves. Crazy thing is now we have faced up to things we get on far better!!. We are having a relatively painless divorce now we have worked things out and the kids are happier, knowing where they are going. If only we had chosen to think.

See thinking, whilst painful short term is better less painful.

Thinking can lead to feeling and if you are thinking about a relashionship that is not going well, it can hurt. If you don't think about it, you avoid the pain.

The avoidance of pain is only temporary however. Reality will make us face up to the actuality.

This can also be seen in the present rise in oil prices. It is easy to see that as market forces catch up they will fall back a bit, why? We wise up and make changes, in our consumption habits therefore demand falls and prices drop. It is about thinking things through

I think that most people prefer freedom from choice, rather than freedom of choice. It is easier to go through life on autopilot.

That is the reality i know, the problem is, as most have found out in our personal realtionships, or religious proclivities, reality catches up with us always. Then it has a nasty habit of finding us unprepared or underprepared

Basically, its the math of pretty scribbles and perhaps the language of god. :oP

Yes i can google it and my friend did it explain them to me. i do not have the higher maths to comprehend them though i understand some of thier appilcations.

Actually you could not be futher from the truth. My friend put into place the computer tools that enable cars stop them entering into a skid. not mere pretty scribbles. as your rather frivolous remark implies.
