Overweight JWs -- on the increase?

yes, i know, the title is a pun.

it was deliberate.. i can recall in the 1970s seeing very few overweight jws.

in fact, i used to think (in my arrogant jw manner) that this was a sign of how jws were better at self-control than worldly people.

i have a question for you.

in all your discussions with the uns ngo chief, was there any talk about membership fees or dues required from ngos?

It depends on the charter. I was told that the German Branch don't give any humanitarian aid because for some reason I don't know they would have to help anyone regardless of their religion. So, they could not say: we send this to JW in this country and maybe a few JW neighbors.

Humanitarian aid is usually given privatly. In the seldom instances the WTS organizes something in Europe I know that the French branch is responsible.

one thing i've noticed about these witness admissions of and justifications for the society's 10-year association with the un is that in many cases, the speakers sound as if they have known about the situation for a while.. otherwise, how can they justifiably come across as so cocksure if they've only learned about it now?.

"of course we need to be registered with them for promoting human rights and the preaching work!

it's just like being a legal corporation.

I guess they will claim to have stopped the association to avoid stumbling anyone. They saw the "campaign" of the apostated and wanted to shelter the brothers who could be confused by a "false" presentation of the facts.

A New Breed Of JW Emerging?

is there a new breed of jw emerging, i wonder?.

i know that there are lots of real brainwashed dubs around who see demons behind every car boot sale item and who scuttle off to the elders with every bit of tittle-tattle imaginable, but, i think that there is a new type of dub who quietly does just as he / she pleases.. this is what i think: many of the long-serving jw's who have seen the 1975 failure and the 1914 generation change are now approaching old age with something of a jaundiced eye, and are choosing to do their own thing in their remaining years.

in conversations i am picking up it seems that the elders are being regarded somewhat derisively by many jw's.

There are hardly any newcomers from the outside. So the new JW are JWs children. I observe that the children of hardliners are either hardliners themselves (but on a lower level) or they leave because of the pressure.

Children of JW that are only JW for social reasons are the ones you describe. They either leave or never get baptizes or they copy their parents stance.

But the WTS is getting more maintream. They see that the end does not come and now they are looking for their place in human society. Show must go on. That's why they look for recognition from governments, UNO and others.

I think the one's with problems to cope with this are the hardliners. Those who just stay for social reasons don't really care.

So, the conflict between hardliners and reformers keeps on. But I think some hardliners could become XJW because the Society is getting too liberal to them.

It's ironic that the one who refused to "compromise" neutrality by allowing civil service was the one who signed the association with the UN...

If I remember correctly (I lend CoC to my father and he gave it to a friend :-)) Barry said he withdrew because of a typo in the quoted Scriptures. I think he just realized there was going to be a change because of the two third majority. I withdrew his vote, there was still a majority but it was not enough to get a change. In 1996 there were new GB members and some former ones were dead (or DFed!) so that Barry's view did not matter - if he did not change his opinion.

Maybe he read CoC. ;-)

the german nw used to read "einen zusammensto" ("a pushing") until the revision in 1986. then it was changed to "zusammenstoe" ("pushings").

i notice the 1987 french edition reads "des heurts" ("pushings") like the german one.. the english nw reads unchanged "a pushing".

The German NW used to read "einen Zusammenstoß" ("a pushing") until the revision in 1986. Then it was changed to "Zusammenstöße" ("pushings"). I notice the 1987 French Edition reads "des heurts" ("pushings") like the German one.

The English NW reads unchanged "a pushing". Remember that the English NW is the Original and the foreign editions are just translations of the English NW.

I think they wanted it to fit more the explanation that there are many "pushings" and not only one big one.

For example, the text at the picture on page 279 in the book "Daniel's Prophecy" reads:

"Pushing" by the king of the south has included high-tech espionage and the threat of military action

This view that there are several pushings was hold before 1986, even in the 60s. Maybe this was not considered when the NW was being achieved in the 50s.

They can do this change because the Hebrew text just uses "to push".

But it is interesting that it seems to be changed only in the foreign editions while the English original stays unchanged.
