Here is a list of things you could do using Linux and open source without spending an extra cent:
- Fully updated operating system - Lots of Linux distributions out there
- Desktop Publishing using Scribus.
- Graphic Design using Inkscape.
- Photo editing and post processing using the Gimp.
- Beautiful Websites using Joomla and Apache server.
- Play with music editing using Audacity.
- Beautiful desktop effects and eye candy without the need of huge hardware resources using Compiz.
- Create powerful database driven programs using PHP and MySQL.
- Do normal office work using worldwide free and open document formats with either OpenOffice or LibreOffice.
- Watch whatever you want using VLC player.
- and much much more that I don't want to list here.
And all of this, without spending an extra cent. To me, is much better than being trapped in the walled gardens of the commercial software, even though I do have to use it due to being paid to support it. But at home, it's not only liberating, it is also fun being able to just try new stuff all the time and learn so much about how things work. Just my 2 cents.
