Hating God?
by avidbiblereader ini cannot but read many of the posts in which god/jehovah or even christ is ridiculed, mocked and even hated?
so i ask the question why?.

Why hate God? I suppose because of the ways his "followers" portray him.
If God is inspiring men to cruelty, the He is a cruel God deserving of hatred.
If God is the all-powerful entity some men say, then He allows suffering and is deserving of hatred.
If God is all-knowing as some men say, then He already knows all outcomes and the current world stage is irrelevent.
God cannot be all-knowing and all-powerful with some plan to do something about what's going on here at some future point without also being completely deserving hatred, dismissal or disbelief.

Why all the Testing?
by zack inthe bible is full of stories about god needing to test people, either as individuals or as a group, the most notorious being the testing.
of adam and eve.. why does an omnipotent and omniscient being need to "test" his creation?
are we like products in a factory?

That was one of the things that got me thinking. Why the need for testing? Especially when we're told we won't be tested beyond our ability?
If each test is within our ability, then frankly there are no tests. Rather, we can only and always just "do the best we can", and that is judged as "good enough".

What's the big deal with Jesus' "sacrifice"?
by bluesapphire inwhat was the big deal with that dam tree to begin with!
-
VoidEater
Yes, God is the Cosmic Bookkeeper, and having no other way to redeem mankind (He being only partially omnipotent) had to sacrifice his son/himself (as the only other perfect human available) to balance out Adam's perfect self being naughty. Scripturally, He could have just forgiven Adam, if he'd just waited for the "food at the right time" (head of household can forgive sins).

The necessity of failed prophetic dates
by proplog2 init is very tempting to ridicule the jw habit of setting dates for the end of the world/ armageddon/ great tribulation.
but prophecy has been a significant part of the judaeo-christian panorama.
there has also been a great deal of tension between "prophets" and "preists".. .

Prop: Then the GB is getting dangerously close to witchcraft and fortunetelling in their predictions - and we all know what Scripture has to say about that. Something else caught my eye: "If you have nothing to do - you become aimless. No big project on a week-end? You're going to lay around, eat, and sleep." Help! I'm bored and I can't get up! Seriously, other disciplines have a much more worthy way to take up the time while waiting for Armageddon - contemplate God. I am rarely if ever aimless. I am almost always very present to what I am engaged in, or "praying". I don't often find the need to distract myself with failed prophecies to while away the hours. I hope you may also find more constructive, spiritually constructive, ways of feeding your own spiritual garden on the off times...

My JW father, I bet he's dissapointed in my ass!
by dawg ini was just sitting here laughing, thinking about how disapointed my father must be in me... what?

My dad is most likely disappointed in some things about me ("Uh, just, uh, I, uh, don't tell me anything about your sex life" - well, duh, like my heart's desire is to hear about his!), but extremely proud of me, too.
Why do they do it? Having had enough psych training and been a therapist, I'd say in my dad's case - he was so badly treated as a child that he's never individuated, become a fully functional human, and craves the approval of a surrogate parent - the society. The WBTS gives him a very similar "family of origin" experience, are very strict with him, and he can constantly find ways that he doesn't "measure up" (that nasty old independent thought thing keeps creeping up). He has never found his internal parent to care for him, and he can't imagine an external parent being kind to him.
Kinda masochistic. Ok, more than kinda.
Still love you dad - you may be proud that I grew up, I'd be even prouder if you could, too...

The conundrum is "black is really white". The GB say that they are both the only source of truth, AND that they are fallible. The only way to make this work is if the GB would provide their truth, AND allow disagreement.
Sadly, this is not what they do. Instead, they insist on both their shield of human imperfection, AND the sword of obedience.
That's more than paradox. That's just plain silly.
You cannot be the source of perfect truth, and the seller of mistakes.
Truly I say unto you, I could still gladly call myself a JW if there were room for disagreement, and a true HUMBLENESS (that of a faithful and discreet slave) on the part of the GB regarding their fallibility. But instead we get this hypocrisy of "I'm always right" - "Except where I'm wrong" - "Don't you date contradict me".
People die because organ transplants are wrong - then one day they're ok. People die because blood fractions are taboo - then one day they're ok. People are welcomed into the congregation - then one day because they smoke they're disfellowshipped. People are commanded to go out in field service - then one day they're "invited" to join in, and THEN they're disassociated because they choose to not go out in field service!
There are real world consequences to this attitide - necessity of failure? I don't think so.

I cannot in good conscience particiapte in a religion that practices shunning. That doesn't look loving to me. I wouldn't want to have to choose between having a relationship with God and having a relationship with my sister. But that's just me.
