I was watching a lecture about the Theology of JRR Tolkiens' world and the elves never died or aged, but in their immortality they became depressed weary of life, of seeing other living things die or even go extinct. That is why they would still fight for the right thing hoping to gloriously end it all. Death was even called 'The gift of men.' It is strange that the Western view of reincarnation is triumphal in providing a more rational explanation of the metaphor of resurrection (some fundamentalist Mormons even call it baby resurrection), while in the Dharmic tradition the goal of reincarnation is to escape the painful cycle of death and rebirth. The Kingdom is something to build in the here and now, not waiting for Jehovah.
Vidiot there was more Zoroastrian thought cribbed by Old Testament writers than anything. Mormonism is fascinating because it somehow goes full circle and brings a lot of Zoroastrian themes back into Christianity.

Even atheists see the value of belonging to a congregation and meditation. Belief in God and religiosity are two different things. -

I admit it, I believe in evolution.
by Louise inafter leaving the dub religion behind, i read everything that i could get my hands on, be it about other religions, beliefs, gods, occult, evolution - you name it - i read it.
i did this to 'catch up' and to educate myself, so that when i can to a decision it would be an intellectual / educational one.
not just because some book or person told me to believe it.. i have over time and with reading aids come to totally believe and accept evolution.

In matters that are obscure and far beyond our vision, even as we may find treated in holy scripture, different interpretations are sometimes possible without prejudice to the faith we have received. In such a case, we should not rush in headlong, and take our stand on one side that, if further progress in the search of truth justly undermines this position, we too fall with it. That would be not to battle for the Holy Scripture but for our own, wishing its teaching to conform to ours. -St. Augustine

As the spouse of a JW, who never believed, I say you guys rock. They deserve to get their ritual hijacked. All the pain they cause and then the JWs mock the eucharist? Could have recited the right scriptures and had an even louder voice. Did it feed into the persecution complex of the JWs, sure it did, but Jesus Christ fed the persecution complex of the Jews when he mashed up the moneychangers, so in a way he was doing what Jesus would do, sorta. -

The Bible Gods Word or Mans
by azor ini remember studying this book years ago and how it impacted my belief system.
i no longer believe the bible is god's word.
however i do have a couple of lingering questions on this subject.

As I have written elsewhere the JWs have all the guilt of Catholicism without any of the Beautiful Bells and Whistles, all the paranoia and tribalism of Judaism without any of the respect for dissent, all the intolerance of Islam without any of the valor. They represent everything wrong with Abrahamic religion, which is why they can claim to be persecuted. All the other Abrahamic religions see their own flaws magnified in the Jehovah's Witnesses, which is why for an ex-JW giving up on God completely after the JWs is the usual reaction. -

They should have gone to Papua. Anything that diverts the Papuans from raising the Morning Star Flag would have made them the darlings of the police over there, I imagine. -

Natural Selection in Religions
by Victor ini recently developed an interest in examining the origins of religion.
so what i've gathered so far is this.
the human mind needs to create an explanation and meaning.

There's a lot of financial security in joining moribund cults, just look at Father Divine. They don't have enough followers to take care of their real estate. I hope that's where the JWs are in 100 years.
Find a celibacy cult with lots of real estate and no chance of mass suicide. There are the Shakers, the House of David in Benton Harbor Michigan, can anyone name any others?

I say my prayers in Gi'iz (Classical Ethiopic) so as not to offend my JW better half with the actual meaning.
Gave up on pursuing a Linguistics Degree after failing Statistics 3 times. Dropped out of Legal Interpreting school.
If I were single I would probably be teaching ESL in an unstable part of the world just for the stripes.
I think my wife at first thought she could bring me around to the Troof, because I was caught between two doctrines when we met, but I could see through the BS at first glance. I told her to bring me a brother who knew the Bible in its original languages and the had read the Bible and the Apocryphal books so that he could go over doctrine with me and refute the Apocryphal books on a book by book basis. Of course no one outside of the Bethel has the time or the resources to do something like that and I have been a thorn in her side ever since. Sorry for digressing.
Orphan Crow: Anyone can get a degree in Theology up to a Doctorate of Divinity from the University of South Africa, pay in Rands instead of dollars, and it is recognised worldwide as University of South Africa started out as a distance college of Cambridge University.
I remember my anthropology professor reluctantly informing us that Jane Goodall only had a foundation/associates degree in anthropology. That made me think about all the dying languages that need saving. I took a Certified Nurses' Aid course but failed the red cross exam. I would still like to perhaps work with elderly speakers of dying languages to record them before they are lost to humanity.

The Real History of Mormonism - Outstanding Lecture
by cofty inif you think the mormon church is off-the-scale crazy you probably don't know the half of it.. the historical information in this talk by david fitzgerald is fascinating.
the good news is that, just like the watchtower, their growth is being stunted by the internet.. grab a coffee and be amazed at just how gullible millions of people can be.. lucy harris has become my new heroine.
don't miss the section from 8:50.
