Received my Voter's ID Card today!
by Metamorphosis inreceived my voter's id card today for the first time ever - just my next step on seperation from my former life!
i'm excited about getting involved in the community now and helping shape my city/state/country for the better instead of sitting around and lamenting on how "evil" everything is :).

Bethel! Is there anyone who DID NOT long to visit Bethel
by purpleplus inbethel is the witness equivalent to mecca.
i never had a strong urge to go, unlike others in the borg.
its funny to hear people marvel at the speed of the printing presses there.

My family went when I was 10. I loved the whole experience. Not sure why now that I think about it, but I have a good feeling when I think back. We went to the Watchtower Farms and I got to play with the little piglets and we saw the Stanley theatre after it was revamped. I tasted Lobster for the first time. The NY skyline was amazing. Out tour guide at Bethel was hot.

Neither, He was a JEW.
Uh.. a Jew is a follower of Judaism (i.e. Jerry Seinfeld, Lenny Kravitz, Sammy Davis Jr... all different shades and all Jewish). It's NOT a race!!! It's like saying Jesus was a Catholic (most Jesuses are).

What would you say?
by misguided inmy 16-year-old son works at the local wendy's restaurant.
the other day while my son was taking his order, a jw elder told him that i, his mother, was a bad influence on him, and that he should come back to the meetings.. i feel so undermined, and i really want to give this guy a piece of my mind.... i thought i'd ask you all first just what you would say...since you're all amazingly bright people and i'm not.. thanks in advance.. edited to add: we've been out for over 6 years now..

First of all, as per some of the other suggestions, there is NO way a Judge would grant a restraining order over one comment like this. Second, if it were me I would ABSOLUTELY call the motherf***** and give him a piece of my mind. Fortunately your son is old enough to speak his mind and let him know that if this happens again that he has the go ahead to do so.

What does your congregation do socially now?
by truthseeker inif you're still in or hear about jw social activities through the grapevine, what does your congregation do now socially?.
my hall does absolutely - nothing - with the exception of high school graduations.
i read a few posts about jw socialising in the 70s and 80s and honestly, reading about it is completely foreign to me - i grew up in the 80s and never experienced the "good times" of jwdom.. it seems most people do their own thing.

I have been df'd for 7 years, but back in the good ol' days our congregation had all kinds of get-togethers. We had picnics every few months (they went all out for the Circuit Overseers visit); we had a few dances for the teens (that got stopped); large gatherings (20+) at people's houses for game/card night. I'm sure it's still the same.

Welcome Bonafide-
Unlike many here I didn't see my time as a JW as being the tortuous hell that some make it out to be. I had constant companions, I was close to my family and I was sure about everything from the nest door neighbor, to the universe.
I understand how you feel though. Going from absolute certainty about the things you've held sacred for your whole life (I was born in too) is hard. When I was first awakening I had chest pains and major anxiety. Still, I came to realize that I have the rest of my life to look forward to. Dwelling on the past accomplishes a whole lot of nothing unless of course you learn from it.
Since you are staying in for the time being.. be true to yourself. Don't knowingly lie to people. Thoroughly research all things JW.. and then widen out your religous search to other faiths.
That's all I gotta say. Again welcome!

In my opinion 15 is old enough to decide not to go. He should respect that. Have you told him that his forcing her to go is hurting their relationship?
