"from now on, when people start harping on about David and Samson and Gideon, I'm going to just say "I'd rather talk about Jesus."
I, too, noticed the habitual fixation on the more violent aspects of the ''us and them'' syndrome (particularly when dealing with the OT massacres), and would tell people that I would rather speak about Jesus. Usually my statement would be met with mild suprise, and then the usual response of:"Why sister, if you did that, people might mistake us for born-again Christians!". And my reply would be, and what was wrong with that? The whole Bible is about Jesus. From the beginning of the creation of the cosmos, to the prophecy of Genesis 3:15, to David, down through the OT, into the Greek Scriptures, to the last book of Revelation -- it's all about the Christ. Why would you not want to prefer to discuss Jesus? Is this not what Jehovah himself wanted? A perfectly reasonable and valid arguement.
And the person would grow silent for a few minutes. And then reply "But still...!"
Kudos to your mom for beginning to break the chains of mind control!

The Ethics of Eugenics
by SickofLies ingenetic technology has advanced to an unbelievable stage.
what used to be science fiction is now quickly on its way to becoming science fact.
there are fertility clinics that can now diagnose whether your child-to-be has any genetic disorders, allowing you to decide whether or not to abort ahead of time.

Hmm...enhanced humans...
This technology should be used to benefit everyone...but in reality, only the very wealthy will have access to it.
Can anyone see The Nightlords from Trinity Blood coming down the pike? Or a Khan Noonien Singh?
Just a matter of time.

My favorite uncle passed away
by DiscoSandy inhi everyone - i don't post here often, but i need some help.
i just received a letter from my (jw) parents, informing me that my (jw) uncle has passed away.
he was my favorite uncle who could always make me laugh.

DiscoSandy, I am sorry for your loss. I am glad that you have fond memories of your uncle. It is astounding to see how cruel the rest of your family has become...deciding to deny you your rightful place to grieve at the funeral services - and all because of the Wild Beasts of Brooklyn. Jesus would never have behaved in such a manner.
My humble opinion:
I think that it is crucial that you realise that YOU are NOT the one at fault here. Even if you were DF'd. There is no biblical justification for this kind of behavior. None. What ever it was that got you DF'd, it's in the past now. I'm sure that you would have welcomed the understanding of your family; TRUE loving kindness (the kind that Christ displayed) really does work wonders. But it was THIER decision to shun YOU. I would try my best not to feel guilty. I understand that you want your husband and children to experience the joys of having an extended family, but you should remember that at the moment, your relatives are not exactly displaying the type of behavior that makes for warm, familial bonding. And the fact that they are willing to speak to your husband and children, but not YOU, YOU, who are the link that brings everyone together, is just plain RUDE. Remember that your family is operating under the influence of a cult. Conditional love. Do you honestly want your children exposed to such ideals...all the time?
Writing about your uncle will help as a catharsis through this most difficult time. These are YOUR memories -- no one can take them from you.
Whatever you decide, we will all be here for you. *huggles*

Even though most of the r&f have computers, quite a large number of them do not have internet service - at least not the ones I have come across. I could never fathom the wisdom of buying such an expensive piece of technology, and then not planning to use it to its fullest potential...but that's just my point of view.

My cousin died yesterday.
by nicolaou inhe was 43, just a few months older than me.
his kidneys failed him when he was just 15 and he'd been on dialysis ever since.
a couple of transplants had failed in the early years and his body deteriorated after that.

Hi nicolaou.
I'm sorry for the loss of your cousin. I'm glad that you have wonderful memories of George. It sounds like he tried to live his life to the fullest, which in the end, is all that any of us can do. And I bet he was really glad that you were around to share his life with him. Again, my condolences.

So, I'm guessing you shit gold bullion, no? Never screwed up? Never made wrong judgments years ago and have them come back for you to face like you should have to begin with? No? Not ever happen to you? You must be the friggin messiah, you're perfect.
And such language! From a dedicated servant of JEHOVAH! Isn't obscene language grounds for disfellowshipping?
And using such disparaging talk about Jehovah's Firstborn?
If she wants a scripture so badly, here's one: 2 Peter 2:19 NKJV (not from the demon-tainted version )
While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.

Call me crazy but I think, neigh, I know, that if I had a child that was abused, I wouldn't "settle" out of court. I'd make sure that the person responsible went to jail for a very long time and was branded as a sex abuser for the remainder of his/her natural life. Why would any parent accept money instead of justice on such an important matter? Maybe you should think about that.
Maybe she should ponder the legal and moral ramifications of paying out settlements if you are TRULY innocent...
