The difficulty of recovering from JW teachings
by DT init's difficult to free yourself from years of cult influence.
i'm concerned that i may still be suffering from hidden assumptions that i haven't considered.
i'll have to examine my thinking for the rest of my life, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.. it would be easier if we could reject everything we were taught, but that's not really possible.

I had a couple of Witnesses at the door.An old man (ovbiously an elder and totally under the influence of watchtower doctrination. The other a very pleasant young sister late teens)
My initial responce was GOODBYE but thanks for calling. Then I thought of young sister. so I asked a question. Do you read the bible? bla bla bla the conversation continued and the New World Translation was praised I was assured admired by the best bible experts in the world.
A simple question I asked was "Do the translators of the N:W:T. claim they translated from the origional Greek and Hebrew". (According to page 5 of there bible they do)
The reply was yes but they are to modest to give there names. I accepted this and said I would you kindly come back when I will have the names of the translators and there qualifications of the Greek and Hebrew language.
They didnt come back. Iam glad I really am not interested in debating with witneses. But I hope the young sister questions why they didnt come back.
Its important to add my manner and approach was both open and friendly. So whilst Iam no longer interested I was saddened that people can be so afraid of honest questions.

Reaching Out
by cluless inas witnesses we were always encouraged to reach out for the privalige of doing this or that or a whole lot of other stuff that doesnt make any scence now .. but its important in life to have something to reach out to.with me i have my wife my little kid and financial security (the kid came aftter i left the witnesses) .
only i havnt found anything to replace the importance of reaching out.as a witness (however misguided that reaching out was).
what in your life has replaced your once sincere belives and given your life the purpose you once had?.

Awake and Watching
Thats very selfless of you. I personally found the anti -witnessing I did was done with to much anger.
I personally cant belive how I have (counting them) 5 true friends from knocking on doors and none that will associate me from the congregation. As an illustration one is a doctor the other a cleaner one just a nice person the other works on a factoryline and the fifth is a guy that only needs his beer . But all of them are contented. I think because they never rationalised life. If they belive in God its personal not for discussion. As a witness we just think to deep. When we leave theres a void because life needs answers that cant be answerd.

Anyone still have trouble expressing anger?
by tall penguin inhaving been doubly mind-f*&ked by an organization that preaches peace and poor boundaries and a perfectionistic mother who hates conflict, i find myself still having great difficulty expressing my anger in a healthy way.
my past response when angry was to cry or turn the anger on myself and become self-destructive, ultimately leading to suicidal thoughts.
i find lately my subconscious percolating anger almost constantly.

This is probobly not politically correct. It also goes against all I belive in raising my child. But on one occassion when (He was 2 years 9 months) and being completly impossible . I was playing billiards and he kept deliberatly reaching up to the table and displacing the balls. Anyway the first and last time I gave him a smack. It worked and he has never done it again. But I felt terrible even today 3 months later. Funnily enough Orlando is now in the bad habit of running out in to cars and dangerouse things. If I could stop this with a smack I think it is justified. I just cant do it.

Thankyou for the reply sooner. Maybe I did answer my own question.
My wife and child yes . I accept that. Because nothing could ever replace them if I lost them. That is everything to me. But my job is a landlord and it really is so uncontributing to anything and I miss the social contact of the ministry. It was great . Even today all my friends came from the ministry. The ministry was everything to me. I would love to find something to replace it. I mean it was just a great way of meeting people. Funny that the baptists atheists muslims and jews became the loving teachers I triead to teach.

What Is The Jehovah's Witness Religion To You?
by minimus into me, the witness religion is either a hardcore group of watchtower dogma believing "kool-aid" drinkers or a group of non-believing, mentally and spiritually lazy zombies who value their friendships and family over principle.. there are those in the middle who i believe are too fragile to even want to think about reality..

My origional reply to your post had more depth.
In a perviouse TOPIC you mentiond you were not so addicted to this board as you once were.
Many Jehovahs Witnesses iam sure feal the same way both to there religion and Congregation.
There is an incredible amount of POWER IN BELONGING. Being a Messanger on this board I ENVY YOU. (I respect what you have achived) Becauuse you are sincere.
If you read my prevoiusre reply to your topic i would only add THAT my hope is that the Jehovahs Witnesses Religion can have(HAD) a POSITIVE part in peoples lifes.
