on page 10 of the december 8, 2001 awake!, the article "hope for arthritis sufferers" feigns to offer encouragement to those afflicted with chronic arthritis.
note how the article describes some of the sad consequences of this condition:such limitations can cause frustration and negative felings about oneself.

The expression of Gaku rings so true. It's hard to "measure up" to the Pharisaical conditions and standards, even as an able-bodied person.
I myself am an arthritis (spondylitis) sufferer, with a walking impairment which came about at about the time I was exiting the organization. I would have had to drag my body door to door to gain their "spiritual encouragement", or spent time (most likely on my own) doing telephone-style witnessing (oh joy!!). I don't think I would have felt "adequate" had I continued to try to keep up with the fully able-bodied ones in the congregation.

there was an interview with the prince of saudi arabia, the one who offered new york $10 million in aid but got rejected by guiliani because he (the prince) made some comments about the palestinian-isreali conflict that were controversial (i.e.
anyway, during the interview the prince said that the saudi people were a very happy people, and he pointed to the fact that there is nary a political demonstration that occurs in saudi arabia.
the interviewer then pointed out the fact that it is illegal for a saudi to demonstrate, and that a strong police presence would preclude many from even attempting to demonstrate.

I didn't see the story on 60 minutes. But you draw some interesting parallels -- the lack of freedom of expression of the Saudi people, and the selfishness and self-aggrandizement of the rulers. Just like those who lead the WT Society proclaim their followers "the happiest people" when there's depression, even numerous suicides within, belying their claims. Shallow claims are shallow, whether they come from the realms of politics or religion.

i've been lurking here for a while now, posted a handful of times, but this board has had a profound effect on me.. i have just finished reading coc which i would never have even heard of if it wasn't for this board.. anyway, in light of everything i have learned here, i have been waiting expectantly for the next unsuspecting jw's to knock on my door, just so i can er, 'enlighten' them.. about 15 minutes ago, just that happened.
i answered a knock on my door to be confronted by two jw's.
one of them i remembered vaguely from a neighboring cong, and the other was someone i knew pretty well from my old cong.. so what did i do?

You're not useless! Well, not any more or less than any of the rest of us evil people here, LOL.
Your response "smiling, nodding" was perfectly appropriate for the occasion. Why? Because of what you next said, that they gave you the party line "we're near the system's end, bla bla bla". These people are programmed to instantly reject anything negative that might be brought up about the WT Society, because after all, it's the absolute truth, right? [8>]
The only people who might listen to you are those considering the JW's but not firmly entrenched, or those who are on their way out and looking for backup as to good reasoning why they're doing the right thing. To use logic and reasoning on anyone else (especially dyed-in-the-wool JW's) is probably just a waste of time.
Be glad though, that you read and absorbed the information in COC for yourself. It surely threw a huge amount of "new light" on the organization for many of us.
