There is a resemblance! And they both had/have something to sell you.
i have friends in very cool jobs.
my world interacts quite often with music stars, and i have interesting conversations.
for instance, i was talking with the members of animal kingdom, and asked the lead singer about the lyrics i picked up while listening them perform for the group a few minutes earlier... i felt stupid because i hadn't realized the name of the song, and only had caught a few lyrics... he wrote of mephistopheles.
Billy,
Jewish song-writers wrote a lot of fantastic Christmas-seasonal music in the 20th century, and none of them believed in Jesus as their personal savior. Even Barbra Streisand did a fantastic Christmas album!

: maybe more peaple leave the Borg after some injustice/maltreatment then disagreeing with the dogma.
I think what Dismissing Servant says is true. After all, the JW's claim to be the home of true love and the world's only spiritual paradise. Although many people in the JW organization are nice, when you find out through personal experience that it's a men's club full of favoritism with plenty of strife, you can really start to question why you're even there.

I seriously don't think "Pumped Up Kicks" was written to glorify violence. Of course it was a look back at the Columbine tragedy of 1999. However it is an artistic attempt to understand the feelings of bullied kids in school, who aren't the cool kids with the cool shoes - who are bullied for being different.
The song is trying to get people to think about the culture in schools where bullying is cool. Foster The People was in no way endorsing shooting people in response.

I guess you can take a lemon and make lemonade. Some people are more resilient than others - some can't seem to recover from mistreatment, while others though scarred do manage to be the embodiment of "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger".
Through sites like this we can reach out to those who we may be able to help, who are struggling, and also we can salute those who have shown resiliency and made it through.
i don't closely follow this show, but this week's episode (bad blood, season 9 episode 13) was captivating for me as an ex-jw.
one of the story lines centered on a 19-year-old boy whose family is jw (but he is obviously a fringe jw) - brought into the emergency room after a serious skateboarding accident by his friend who was totally unaware he was jw.. the episode summary along with a "watch this episode" link is linked below.. i found most of the jw storyline quite realistic (except for a "we believe prayers can yield miracles" quote from one of the jw's - i think it was the mother).
after the parents refused a blood transfusion for the boy, the resulting chaos and philosophical arguments were riveting to watch.. http://abc.go.com/shows/greys-anatomy/episode-detail/bad-blood/1062764?page=1.
Thanks Jgnat! I posted this thread because I only looked for in the "Entertainment" zone of this site for anything on Grey's Anatomy rather than in the "Friends" zone.
Gwen you have a PM.
i was very sheltered as a jw.
bu since i left 5 yrs ago i have as a person both in school and in life.
i have noticed that i am more self confident with myself and i am more objective about things.
I questioned everything I was ever told about spirituality, God, etc. My path took me through agnosticism to general disbelief / skepticism.
I started voting in 2002. I had 2 blood transfusions in 2011 and survived! Oh, and I live with a never-been-JW woman with whom I am not married.
I have learned to be a little more realistic about who to trust and who not. The friends or associates I have are those who are supportive, helpful, kind. I don't tolerate other kinds of people in my life any more.

The show, despite a few minor inaccuracies and omissions, did a really good job portraying the conflict between the hard-line JW religious view and the medical world that wants to save lives.
Here is a link to a summary of the episode and a "watch this episode" link:
