the good news of the kingdom of god,.. a kingdom that come to govern on the earth, this wts teach.... but the apostles and christians preached this?

Galatians 1:6-9 (English Standard Version)

No Other Gospel

6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. So what is the gospel? "The grace of Christ"..."the gospel of Christ". Are JWs preaching it? No. For starters, they are preaching the gospel of "jehovah". Here's THE gospel, as explained by Paul.

1 Corinthians 15 (New International Version)

1 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.

Three verses (3-5) of to receive, take your stand on and be saved, plain and simple.

An Apology to Snowbird

i apologized to snowbird in private for a insensitive and disrespectful comment i made on her "swan song" thread.

i told her i would post a public apology on the board if she wanted me to.

so here is my apology to snowbird exactly as i wrote it.. it's been brought to my attention a number of times that my comment to you on your "swan song" thread was offensive and uncalled for.

in 1991, one of the watch tower societys senior writers, colin quackenbush, told me in the privacy of his office about letters which the society had received from prominent and credible elders, not apostates (thats exactly what he said), who were concerned about the increase in accusations saying that jehovahs witnesses were false prophets.

Knock, knock, who's there?!

hi jwners!.

i thought is might be the postman but then he usually rings the bell ;).

then something told me the jws had come round to "serve me" and looking through the opaque glass on the door seemed to confirm this.. two young ladies started to present their pitch, holding out some wt literature which i declined, explaining i already know enough about their religion as i have a friend who is a jw.. having previously vowed not to waste too much time in circular debate i decided to cut to the chase and leave them with something to ponder so i grabbed my computer and asked them to turn in their nwts to john 6. as i was looking it up, i set the scene and told them it was the bit where jesus was saying people needed to eat his flesh and drink his blood.

Meeting Junkie No More Chalam - I think you did a great job! Probably gave them plenty to think about and mull over between calls. I remember having a few conversations pretty much like you just had (but from the other side!) - and in about 35 years of witnessing, for those conversations to stand out is saying something!

Hopefully the seeds sown germinate sooner or later :)

jamesmahon It looks like yours were slightly more switched on then mine or perhaps they are just more comfortable talking with people who believe in Jesus and the bible because they can always full back on it being due to interpretaion and understanding and they trust the WT.

The JWs I meet are normally more than happy to talk. I think the vast majority of people say "no thanks" so finally getting to talk to someone is a breakthrough.

cantleave Good Job Stephen. I take it you have never been a Witness, if not, what drew you to this site?

I have a good friend who is a JW so I came here to understand more about him and his family and friends and their situation.

will jehovahs witnesses make me a permanant "do not call "

2 nice ladys called on me the other day , as one started her "speach" the other one looked embarresed , i interupted and said to the embarresed one "you know why im not interested in your religion ,dont you " she replied "yes im sorry i couldnt rember which one you lived in " (i had met her at my door some months ago , and explained that my daughter was raped as a child by a man i had met at the kingdom hall , and some jws support him despite him abusing other jws etc , i had told of the paedpphile problem in the religion and my jw inlaws dont visit my little girl because her daddy is a disfellowshipped man , which i think is very unchristian) the other lady then started admiring my dress , then my little girl appeared and she said how pretty she was etc, i said goodbye and closed the door , i wish i had heard what the 2nd lady had said to her friend in explanation for why i was not interested !

the annoying thing is my little girl then wanted to know who they are and what did they want to talk about , so i explained they were in "that religion that grandma is in "that stops her coming to see daddy , which upset her , then hubby came back from work later in a good mood untill i told him of the visit that had upset our little girl and then he was moody with me and said "dont talk to them again , next time tell them to be made a "do not call " for ever and never ever review it !is it possible to do that in our situation ?

i dont want my family life upset .

In the UK you could be setting yourself up for arrest for inciting religious hatred with a sign like that.

Agreed. A sign saying "NO Jehovah's Witnesses or pedophiles" should do the trick though :)

As I was looking it up, I set the scene and told them it was the bit where Jesus was saying people needed to eat his flesh and drink his blood. The first JW said it was symbolic and I agreed.

John 6:53-54 (New International Version)

53 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.

54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

So my questions to them were

1. If you don't take the symbolic bread and wine at the memorial, how do you have an life in you?

2. If you don't take bread and wine, how are you going to be raised up at the last day?

Of course, they pretty much immediately cut to the "144, 000" and stuff. I remarked that Jesus said there would be one flock and one shepherd John 10:16

Another WT book was produced and they were preparing more "explanations" I asked them what is their highest authority, the bible or the WT publications?

They said the bible.

So I asked them about their answers to my John 6 question once again.

They explained they could understand my point of view but they were satisfied with the WT explanations.

I told them my own highest authority was the words of Jesus and I found the WT explanation to contradict them.

After a little more talk we said some parting salutations and off they went.

One other thing, I don't know if it is just those that come knocking at my door but JWs on FS always strike me as if they are on the way to a funeral, dressing predominantly in black or grey and complemented with a somber demeanour. Clearly, they are not bringing "good news" but news of death.

So what do you think?

This doctrine is core to the WT because it demotes Jesus to "a god" and a created being rather than THE Creator He is.
