Hi I am Caspians sister and this is my first day here.
by Lainey inhello this is my first post and i wanted to introduce myself so here goes.. my name is lainey, and i have not been to the meetings for about 4 years now.. i am 28 and work as a doctor in a big city university hospital as a sho.. also for my sins, i am cassies little sis, and i am staying with him for a little while, as i am signed off sick for the next month with a stress related disorder.. after the death of my older bro and my dad within the past few months, i started suffering from terrible nightmares, most of them connected in some way to my witness upbringing.. me and cassie have talked for some length and he suggested that i spend some time having a look on this site and meeting others who have had similar issues to face in life.. i hope you are all are better listeners than cassie, who tends to fall asleep when i am in the middle of talking to him.
(brothers!!!
) btw he hates being called cassie lol.. anyway i am not a big talker, so i probably wont post a lot, however i am going to scout around for a while.. thanks .

you conveniently sidestep the question about killing in self-defence. "If killing is wrong, killing is wrong" is a fatally flawed argument; like many such simple logic, it is also simply wrong.
Abaddon wrote:
I have expanded on this statement above, you must have missed it. Read the thread.
****No, you didn't 'expand' on the statement; unless, of course, the expansion is Watchtower-speak: you made an absolute statement about killing being wrong. All killing in not wrong. Is it too much to revise your opinion or 'modify' you statement about killing being wrong?
Your comment regarding imprisonment:
Except that such a person continues to murder other prison inmates and prison guards, eh?
You are suggesting that it is okay for the state to kill people in cold blood to avoid the possibility of them killing people - whether they are in prison or out of prison makes no difference to the argument, and this is the entire argument for the death penalty.
***** I won't object to you saying the State 'kills', insofar as killing means the taking of life; but you resort to emotions, re: killing in cold blood. Of course, it makes a difference whether they're out of prison or not. What appropriate punishment for someone serving, say, natural life who kills again while in prison? If your death penalty argument can't disinguish between different cases, it's as good as being worthless, and that's perhaps what's wrong with the views you present: you make abosolute statements without regards for other perspctives.
Do you know how many people are killed in prison each year, or the difference between, say the US penal system with regard to murders within prison, and the UK penal system and murders within prison? Come up with some facts that show that a high murder rate within prison may be an argument against using life imprisonment...
****No, I don't. Do you in turn claim that your views are based on statistics? How many murders by anyone in prison will satisfy you? 30? More?

My JW Friends reaction to the Vicki Boer press release
by shiloh ini forwarded the press release to my jw friend yesterday afternoon and we talked about later that evening when i saw her.
i could see that she was confused and somewhat bewildered.
she first wanted to know more details about the case itself and when i supplied them, she became even more confused.

Off topic.. but...
The press release says Vivki Boer is a former Jehovah's Witness. Is that strictly correct??

The Watchtower Says It's Creature Worship To Excessively Applaud a Speaker
by minimus inhow many rotten governing body members gave horrendous talks and got a standing ovation?
how many of them just walked on stage to an automatic round of applause?
...notice the words from the 1951 watchtower on page 392----"a mild yet subtle form of idolatry that must be guarded against is the practice some make of applauding excessively when their favorite speaker or some prominent individual among the lord's people addresses an assembly.the mere stepping og this individual upon the platform sometimes brings a round of applause.

Run, Sir Clark, Run...
by teejay inif he runs, he will be the most qualified of all those who now aspire to the office in 2004. if he runs, general wesley k. clark (ret.
) will be the second most qualified person to ever seek the presidency of the u.s. over the past 100 years, second only to the great william jefferson cliinton.
what follows are excerpts from an article about him in a recent esquire magazine.. he is a remarkable man with an unassailable integrity -- the kind of man that has all the little bushites shaking in their boots.

HOW "TRUE" ARE JW HOURS ?
by josephus inas a jw i admit to "massaging" my hours nearly every month to keep up with the expected amount.. my brother never put in hir report for nearly 2 years.
i was amazed when i asked the secretary he told me "i allways put a few hours in if people forget" !!!
so my brother was a regular publisher despite not going out on service.. he was one man.

When she said she hadn't been out in service for several months, the elder said, "Well do you read the Bible with your children?" When she said yes, the elder said, "See? That's 4 hours right there. I'll put you down for that.
And you say there aren't loving, kind elders?

Most of the people I've worked with don't lie about their hours. There are 'smarts', or, tactic designed to gather up more time. I learnt a few when I started working with some pioneers. This brother (used to live close by) would hand out a tract immediately he left his door, or sometimes to his neighbour; counting time has started. He makes it to the field service meeting point, then stops counting time for the duration of the meeting. Lunch time: he counts lunch time because he hands a tract or says some kingdom thing to whoever's serving lunch, so it's all legit. Same thing on the way back home: he doesn't stop counting time until he enters his door, reasoning being that he's still preaching. Usually, he gets home and hands a tract to an unbelieving friend or neighbour or friend of a friend.
When I would report hours like: 2 hrs 18 mins, the book study conductor (used to collect the slips, I was almost always late) would say to round up, after conscientiously asking questions/saying sth like: when exactly did you stop? You're in service 24 hrs anyways... Perhaps lots and lots of minutes and half-hours. But blatant lies? Hardly.
