Some Atheists Like to Use the Analogy of a 'Crutch' for Religion
by leavingwt insome atheists like to use the analogy of religion being like a "crutch.".
dr. david eller suggests, below, that this is a poor analogy.
in my own, limited experience, his words ring true.

Seeing your glasses, recognizing your program, is a rare thing, achieved by few individuals in even fewer societies. It demands a certain amount of "freedom," a certain amount of distance from oneself.
True. An atheist who doesn't want to see his own glasses is less free than a believer who understands why he believes.

Would Doctor Who's Tardis (Time Machine) Cure Mankind of Christianity and other Religions?
by OnTheWayOut in....or of any beliefs that require faith in an unseen god or gods?.
if humans could go back and see the primordial soup struck by lightning (or whatever it was that actually started it) and could personally observe that there were primitive man-like creatures that spread across the world coming out of africa (or whatever really happened) and that there wasn't a garden of eden ever or a worldwide flood ever.... .....would that allow some of the most staunch believers to put aside their beliefs?.
if men could go back and look for jesus and see what he really was (or was not or even if he was at all) and others could do the same for abraham, buddha and confucious and mohammad and joseph smith and c.t.

Does your thread title imply that you label being religious as a disease?

No. They did not convert the people of the first century to Christianity and would not do so today.
But how could you remain an atheist when you see someone being raised from the dead? -

Atheists show more brain activity

There're many cultural influences on brain function. Some say that non-theistic religions like buddhism might have an even better influence on the brain. The fact that so many atheists in the US suffer from depression and anxiety might be related to the fact that being non-religious is not accepted in American culture.

She said she does not condone his action, but understands what might have pushed him to the edge.
It would be great if we could extend these feelings of understanding to other madmen or criminals that we can less easily identify with.

It's interesting to have a terrorist with whom at least some members of this board seem to be able to identify themselves.
