  there have been numerous recent threads about the level of psychiatric illness amongst the jw fraternity.

  does anyone have any stories about the way in which this manifested itself with people in their congregations?.

  i remember the brother who was found by the police in the early hours of the morning wandering about in the local park.

  Oh! I almost forgot.

  There was one brother in this congregation that I went to at one time who was banned from going on the ministry unless accompanied by an Elder.

  Apparently he suffered from acute paranoia and if the householder "didn't want to know", he took it as a personal insult. This would lead to the use of foul language and threats of bodily harm to the householder. The police were called on more than one occasion before he was restrained with the banning order from the Elders.

  There have been numerous recent threads about the level of psychiatric illness amongst the JW fraternity. Does anyone have any stories about the way in which this manifested itself with people in their congregations?

  I remember the brother who was found by the police in the early hours of the morning wandering about in the local park. Apparently he believed that he was Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and he was waiting for Judas to come and betray him.

  On another occasion this same brother was taken into "care" whilst giving a public talk from the roof of the local multi-storey car park. When he was admitted to the ward he found that the occupant of the next bed was his own mother! Probably she had been doing strange things also. Either that or he had driven her round the bend too.

  Also there were the elderly couple who spent more time in the local psychiatric ward than in their own home. The only time you could be sure not to find them hospitalised was when they attended the Memorial in order to partake of the emblems.

  She was a fanatic about going on the Ministry and witnessed to everyone who came into earshot. Her favourite trick was to get hubby to pull up close to the next car at the traffic lights. She then got the driver to let down their window before stuffing the Watchtower and Awake into the car.

  Those were the days!

  Anyone else got similar memories?

  i have a friend who is studying with the jw's right now.

  he's a very open minded guy and has been interested in hearing what i have to say on the matter.

  he has seen the dateline show (i taped it for him) - and i've shown him some info about the history.

  Hi Dawn,

  If I were you I would try to keep it simple. Your friend is only a "Study" so may not yet have got to the problem areas. These problem areas are mostly kept hidden from people who are studying so it is good that you are looking for them now.

  They should be the sort of question that his study conductor can believe are his and not something he has been primed with.

  Prisca is right.

  I have to deal with this situation on a daily basis, as those nearest and dearest to me have been "in" for just far too long. Any attempt that I made to destroy their belief system would also destroy them and I could just not bear that responsibility.

  On the other hand, if someone is showing evidence of having doubts they are probably already mentally re-adjusting, even on a sub-concious level, to a changed situation. In this case there is no harm in providing them with a little help to see things a bit more clearly - but let them start the ball rolling.

  Or if you want, just sew little seeds infrequently and lightly - no big deals to start.

  As someone with some knowledge of this problem my advice would definately be "do nothing and say nothing" unless a very clear opening presents itself - then walk on egg shells.

  It paints vivid pictures of major events to take place in the time of the end, the time in which, according to Biblical evidence, mankind has been living since 1914.

  The theory is that if (a) is true it automatically follows that (b) is true also.

  I once found an excellent web site that showed just how the WBTS use language patterns such as the Milton Model and Meta Model to bypass the filters in the brain.

  Of course you would have to be absolutely paranoid to believe that every article in every publication is full of verbal trickery. Not only would it be self defeating it is totally unnecessary but used in the right way it can have a devastating effect, even upon the most intelligent individuals

  Has anyone come across the web site I mentioned above or does anyone have other examples of the Societies use of language patterns etc.to put across its message?

  I can't see anything in Romans 8:9 that could in any way be connected with the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society.(King James Version of otherwise)

  God's holy spirit bears witness with they spirit that they his.

  Plain English will do.

  Can you just clear up one point for everyone:

  Jehovah spoke directly to Moses, not through angels or in dreams and visions. Are you telling us all that you seriously believe that Jehovah speaks directly to the GB of Jehovahs Witnesses and instructs them in exactly the same way He did Moses?
