i had lunch with a jw friend who's just finished a law degree.
she was saying that at the last circuit assembly the bethel speaker, (philip longstaffe) said that the society had not changed its stance on further education, and that college for vocational skills was all that they thought was ok. my friend's a bit of a free thinker (i'd half hoped that this lunch date was to tell me she had doubts, but no) so she doesn't give fig what they think.
i was actually appointed as an elder the month before i started attending uni and the co had told the other elders it was no reason to prevent my appointment.. anyone else heard this at their assemblies?
It has been my experience, being involved on the periphery for the past nine years, that the Dubs say "yes" "Yes" "YES" at the meetings and then go off and do their own thing. Many do not understand what the religion is all about and many others could not care less what they are told. They don't know and don't want to know.
I often get the response "Oh! that doesn't apply to me" if I point this sort of thing out.
Of course you will always get the exception that proves the rule but I have found the majority to be completely two faced.

a certain jw doesn't believe in the 1914 doctrine any longer.
this, of course, naturally gives rise to certain serious problems.
for example, how can this person now continue to participate in field service activities and make use of the publications produced by the wts?
As an Unbaptised Publisher I was faced with this very question. When I found out that the 1914 chronology did not add up I went to the elders and told them that I wanted to terminate my involvement. I said that I could no longer go out on field service and tell people that they had to believe things that were likely untrue and that I could not believe myself.
Their response was that I would never be asked about 1914 whilst I was in the ministry therefore it should never be a problem for me!!!
However they did agree that if I were ever to conduct a Bible study my disbelief might present a problem and consequently they accepted my "resignation" (no announcement).
The strange thing is that they never pointed out that I had to believe 1914 in order to get baptised and be a Witness and they never tried to convince me of 1914. It seemed that most of the people that I spoke to did not believe it either and I later found that most Witnesses that I came into contact with did not even understand the Doctrine or it’s implications.

it was clearly not intended to be taken seriously but it does reflect another possibility that should be considered seriously and that is that there are anti-apostates on this board.. i do not consider myself to be a particularly paranoid person but i have seen signs of things that do not seem quite right to me.
so what do i mean and how would an anti-apostate operate here?
Perhaps a better term would have been Counter–Apostates.
There is an abundance of good material on this board and I suspect that at least 75% of it would get a doubting JW thinking seriously about his future. I was an Unbaptised Publisher but learning some of the factual and checkable material on this board saved me from the clutches of the Society.
However I do know of two others who came here and unfortunately clicked on the "wrong" threads. One of them was a Belief thread that started out good and then degenerated into a blasphemous slanging match complete with the semi-oblierated sexually explicit words.
Whether intentional or not, it had an effect that does not reflect the purpose of this site as far as I can see.
This wonderful "right" to freedom of speech is a two edged sword that a counter–apostate can use to advantage. This is a good site that has a high profile and is easily found by both ex-JW’s and those thinking of departing. Just occasionally a lot of unnecessary stuff goes on here that would be better posted somewhere else and I got to thinking why? Thats all.

i have a question.
i was reading about russell figuring the date 1914 from the great pyramid.
how do the jws explain it now?it seems that is one of the teachings that hasnt changed.by that i mean the date.
Almost right German JW but the year they start from is 607 BC, a year in which very little happened according to history. For some reason better known to themselves the J.W religion choses to believe that the year in which the Temple at Jerusalem was destroyed was 607 and not 537, the year which all historical pointers indicate.
Since the basis for all their calculations is fundimentally flawed, their reasoning based on this must also be false, throwing their claims about themselves as the only true religion into doubt, to say the least.

i posted here the other day and got a great response.. my bro in law gf is becoming a jw but he thinks it wont effect them as a couple (he doesnt want to become one).
i just want to know if being a jw in england is any different than in other countries?.
me and my husband sense trouble ahead for him this was comfirmed by a lot of the replies i recieved by mainly peole from canada and america.. i f anyone has experiances about jw in the uk i would appreciate hearing them.

I’m in the U.K. and I’ve said before on this board that there seems to be quite a bit of difference between countries as far as the rules are applied.
My wife married an "unbeliever" (me) and had no problems with the congregation. We have moved five times since we married and she has had no trouble anywhere. My wife is aware that I will never be "absorbed" into her religion.
As far as our relationship is concerned, it would be better without this difference but I think it is about as good a relationship between a man and wife that you will find. We are both happy. It has been my observation during visits to Kingdom Halls that J.W.’s in England apply the rules that they are comfortable with and ignore the rest as only applying to other people.
My wife does not shun a disfellowshipped relative but will have nothing to do with a disfellowshipped person she does not know well.
They are a strange lot.

Very simple:
By the maximum use of all the sexually explicit and foul language and all the blasphemous talk about the Christian religion that it is possible to get away with.
With what objective?
Again simple:
Lurkers or others who have serious doubts about life as a JW come here to have a quick peek at the other side of the coin. They are extremely timid at the first visit and will often be in a very fragile and vulnerable state. What better to exploit this situation and turn the doubter back to where he came from than the threads and posts of an Anti-Apostate. Particularly as this site has a high profile and is extremely easy for JW’s to come across when looking for alternative information.
Of course I realise that there are many atheists with genuine strong non-religious beliefs here who like to put their views over in a challenging way - and this is a discussion board covering many issues. But this is something different and something that has worried me since I first came here a couple of years ago. Regrettably it is impossible to give examples without seriously offending the writers of the posts.

Nice to read your story again. You and I are around the same age and something you said rang a bell for me. My father also went off to WW II and came back a stranger to my mother - they never had a proper relationship after that and I'm sure that has affected my life and my ability to form relationships.
It would be interesting to find out if others on the board, of a similar vintage to ourselves, can relate to this.

i am starting a new series called the governing buzzards ... it will feature bazaar, twisted, foolish, and strange teachings and policies of the watchtower organization.
anything from how they try to make themselves look really good ... to how they really appear when the sheeps clothing is removed ... ... yes, thre will be some embarassing moments for them ... ... and ... some shocking revelations ... but mostly, the governing buzzards will just appear ridiculus ... .i hope to make you laugh ... ... and maybe get mad but at the end of the day, relax and enjoy life ... ... some of this might even make you a little sick ... but ... i will try hard not to put you to sleep.
... perhaps parts of this series will make you think ... but, to the watchtower buzzards monitoring this board, you need to know that being an ex-jw apostate, ex-anointed is: ... because we no longer go door-to-door like suited robots ... no more silly, boring, never ending meetings ... ... and we have learned that we are not weeping and gnashing our teeth ... but instead we are doing great !!!

On what basis are they selected and who makes the selection.
Is it true that a puff of white smoke goes up from Brooklyn Bethel when a new one is selected or is this just the Catholics with their big cigars.

this question actually came up because i was thinking about independent charities and the potential advantages of them teaming up with the un.
then i thought... hmmmm if they could get funding... if ngos could get funding, that might explain why the watchtower would join.
what other benefits could there possibly be?
It is my humble opinion that the reason that the Society became a N.G.O. attached to the U.N was fairly simple - they needed credibility as an acceptable form of religion. Without this credibility there are numerous countries in which they would find it very difficult to practice or expand. By being able to say "we are members of the U.N" they were able to put off the governments of some of the more backward countries from exercising open hostility to them. Some governments probably believed that this would be disrespectful to the U.N.
