i'm a newbie as far as delving into information other than wt based, and have only just started posting on this board...so maybe the following thought will be old hat to some of you, not a concern or perhaps something you occasionally think about.
but, are you scared to watch the news?
purely for the fact of seeing things go on in the world that would prompt you to think about your jw upbringing?
Thanks Jimmy :) That's the thing, I don't think I'm ready to read any literature yet :/ I think I'm ready to hear others opinions from this site and to leave the Wt behind...but feel trepidation at the thought of actively reading other material. Baby steps :)
If you do decide to read these books you'll discover they are not full of anger and hate as advertised... but actually come from loving, reasonable sources.
the last time they visited me they kept talking about how their brothers and sisters aren't very close to them anymore (on both mom and dad's sides of the family).
i wanted to say, "do you think that's because you joined a cult and have held them at arm's length for decades now?
" anyway, i think they also worry that if something happens they will be taken care of by their children.
It will be so sad for the grandchildren of JWs, to at some point learn they never got to know them was due to the grandparent shunning their (the grandchild's) parent because of a cult. I think the grandchildren will know and be the wiser about the reality of the negative effect of cultism.

My dad (JW elder) was looking at one of my history books and came to the conclusion that the news has always been about bad things- even before 1914. A little cognitive dissonance on his part that probably didn't go very far, unfortunately.

Wants to Leave, I've only been a member here for a year or so. It wasn't that long ago that I felt the same about the news that you do now. But I assure you, that fear is completely gone now and it is wonderful.
i was watching reruns of "three's company" and was telling the wife how much i liked it as a teenager.
i thought john ritter was a brilliant comedic actor.

It wasn't until later that I realized why she said that. Remember, at one time, this was a program that was viewed as extremely bad by JWs. She must have grown up with that thought and then, after actually watching, realized how silly that was.

Here's why their method works: if there is good news then it's a fulfillment of "peace and security". If there is bad news it's a fulfillment of the sign of the last days. Read Steve Hassan and Ray Franz's books. You'll get over the fear.
obviously a book written for kids by old dumb morons at bethel the book starts with abels murder {with pictures for the kids} people begging to get into the ark before drowning to death...a good lesson for kiddies!
a women putting a tent peg thru someones temple {with pictures} moses killing an egyptian.
etc a horrified atheist lady returned the books my mother gave as "gifts" {count 2 placements} after seeing the horrific topics, she decided it was "not apropriate for her kids.".
Loved Candle's video. What's really crazy is how I never thought about this before. I grew up with it, so you know, I guess I thought it was normal. Now it's so easy to see the brainwashing and fear of a vengeful God it instills in children.
