I remember thinking, "this issue has nothing to do with me. Jehovah and Satan need to work this out amongst themselves."

Does the Issue of Universal Sovereignty make sense to you as an explanation for evil?
by gubberningbody init used to for me, and now it doesn't.. i'm not sure how i was able to accept that argument now that i don't, but perhaps it was connected with my increasing compassion for people and their personal suffering as i've grown older.. now it seems like a sick excuse.
more like a bar-bet with satan and all of creation suffers.. i read paul's words and he has no rejoiner except to say in effect "sucks to be a vessel of wrath...glad i'm not one, but who are you to complain anyway, huh?
who's bigger, smarter and more powerful than you, you, you complaining vessel of wrath, you.

Muscle testing, applied kinesiology, and just plain being wrongheaded
by JimmyPage inmy wife's family have been jws for generations.
we all know that the watchtower had crazy ideas about health early on and were usually at odds with the medical community.
so it's no surprise that my in-laws are big on non-traditional ways of treating ailments.. but for years now the society has printed articles and preached in assembly talks against applied kinesiology, or muscle testing.

My wife's family have been JWs for generations. We all know that the Watchtower had crazy ideas about health early on and were usually at odds with the medical community. So it's no surprise that my in-laws are big on non-traditional ways of treating ailments.
But for years now the Society has printed articles and preached in assembly talks against applied kinesiology, or muscle testing. So you would think that a good JW would listen to that and fall in line.
But no! My in-laws all continue the practice and insist it has real value. My wife's mother has even used it in the past to answer yes and no questions, which is basically akin to spiritism. A friend of mine compared the practice in general to water witching, which I thought was apt.
To me I think what I'm dealing with here is a stubborn streak in this family to refuse to admit they are wrong. I think it goes deeper than just the usual JW thinking that they are never wrong in their religious beliefs. I think the general "I'm never wrong" attitude has contributed to their staying trapped in the WT but I also think it goes beyond that because what the Society currently teaches about these practices is being completely ignored.
What do you think of all this? Anybody else run into similar situations?

Mass defection possible?
by stuckinamovement inthere are many of us who are trapped within the religion and are looking at leaving.
i was wondering..... if there was an organized and well publicized effort to leave the organization en-masse on a certain date yet to be determined, how many do you think would participate?.
one person leaves the org and it creates a small ripple.

Zen Living Part 20 (summarized): Manage Your Career by not Managing Your Career
by JimmyPage inmany of us choose career paths based on false assumptions, what other people want, or on our own unfulfilled needs rather than on where our abilities lie.. striving to get ahead implies the future is somehow preferable to the now and more worthy of your attention.
it also tends to backfire.
being the best you can be right now will take you farther.. you can't control how life might impact your career-related circumstances.

I remember people lining up for gas immediately. Many of the gas stations took advantage and price gouged.
I had a friend in Bethel and I called him to check on him. He said I was the first person to call him.
They showed the same news footage repeatedly all day. My elder dad thought they shouldn't have shown it quite so much, hard as it was to watch.
If anything should have caused the governments to turn on religion it should have been these events. Many thought that there would be more attacks from the Muslim world until the United Nations would have to step in and put a clampdown on religion. The fact that it never happened proved once again how wrong the WT's predictions are.

Crisis of Conscience - The Movie
by cedars ini know... how cool would that be??!.
having just commented on the post by trailerfitter about the situation with his wife, and how i have personally found the book crisis of conscience by ray franz to be the perfect antidote to the society's perception of itself as being god's earthly organisation, the thought occurred to me: what if there was a movie about ray franz and his life?
obviously the society would be in uproar, and letters would be read out to all congregations all over the world not to go and see it, but just imagine!

Hey if a movie like "Worlds Apart" could get made, then why not this?
Kyria's book and Tony Dushane's book would make great movies as well.
Of course it would probably be a hard sell cuz like Outlaw says, "No one outside of JWs gives a shit about JWs".

Did Life Originate By Chance or Intelligent Design? Or is There a Third Option?
by JimmyPage inwhen discussing the argument of how life originated the wt always boils it down to being chance vs. intelligent design.. no scientist in their right mind believes it happened by chance.
nor do most scientists believe that life is a product of god.. there is a solution that the wt completely ignores and that is... natural selection.. how many here who believe in a creator have honestly examined what natural selection really is?.
(i've been reading "the god delusion" by richard dawkins and was very surprised when i came to the chapter that actually mentions the watchtower society's arguments for intelligent design.
