  Countries you couldn't visit for dying of Laughter

  ummmm what am i up to now?

  its ok, i'm just being mischievious.. so graham norton was on channel four this evening in japan, what a very peculiar race!!.

  which countries do you think that you could not visit for knowing that when you were there, you'd just fool about laughing at the absurdity of the culture and why?

  Bear in mind that these things take some time. In UK a Select Committee of the House of Commons appointed on the 13th February 1895 (not a typo) to inquire wheter any and what changes in the present system of Weights and Measures should be adopted, recommended as follows:

  -That the metrical system of weights and measures be at once legalized for all purposes.

  -That after lapse of two years the metrical system be rendered compulsory by Act of Parliament.

  Weight and Measures Act was passed 6th August 1897 yet more than century has passed and it seems that transition time was too short.

  The way dates are expressed is numerous. Years ago I decided to go logical and started writing units in decending order for example 2001-10-31.

  During 12 years I had numerous longer tech training periods for 1-3 months at a time in London, Paris, Zürich, Manchester NH and Wilmington MA. This is the order my memories run from positive down. I do not blame any other than myself, but to my experience there is a wide gap in general between these two continents. Habits and attitudes are different and the one that adjusts easily will have least difficulties.

  In Wilmington MA I was the only one attending training outside US and it was heartwarming to hear people from California constantly referring to the East Coast with names. I never forget that I was remainded that it was not proper to eat ice cream before 10 am (they had a vending machine for it). They made remarks for me dressing casually during training and wearing my suit at evenings as they behaved just vice versa. Fortunately we were downstairs as I was told that in the office they had limited the number of pens one carry in shirt pocket. Also set temperature limit for men wearing short sleeves. Some of them could not understand me having a steak instead toast and maple syrup at breakfast etc.

  These experiences did not depress me understanding that I was the odd one out, square, whatever. It is very much up to one's own personal attitude. Why anybody would travel on ones own expense and free will without first learning about the destination. If travel goes with your emplyment you eventually get used to these differencies.

  I'm a useless Apostate :(

  i've been lurking here for a while now, posted a handful of times, but this board has had a profound effect on me.. i have just finished reading coc which i would never have even heard of if it wasn't for this board.. anyway, in light of everything i have learned here, i have been waiting expectantly for the next unsuspecting jw's to knock on my door, just so i can er, 'enlighten' them.. about 15 minutes ago, just that happened.

  i answered a knock on my door to be confronted by two jw's.

  one of them i remembered vaguely from a neighboring cong, and the other was someone i knew pretty well from my old cong.. so what did i do?

  Living in next to backwoods helps but those three calls I have had for past ten years I have mentioned my DF status and the young lady witnesses disappeared in no time at all. This does not count an elder telephoning me and us having two lenghty conversations about my possible reinstallment (whatever is the proper term).

  All I know is that I intended to reply to NebbieGirl's passage: "I think I need to spend a bit more time here in preperation for the next time!" Whatever the outcome would have been I sense that she felt being unprepared.

  Wheter this old saying is here proper or not has to be judged by others not me. This is of the decent ones I recall in english and I just like it. Also it is a constant reminder as to my english.

  i have been watching the wt/un issue unfold.

  while i am personally disappointed with the limp response from the 'spindoctors' from the society i believe that we are flogging a dead horse.

  many of the people who would leave the society over this issue are already at a stage that they only need the 'straw to break the camels back'.

  Neither I would bet my money on people leaving the WT society. Past histories of religious groups tend to follow the same type of pattern. Along comes near zero growth and even in spite of major problems people would not leave in large numbers. Mormons had comparable problems and what happened as to their number? Nothing much.

  One thing common with religious groups on a long run is dissatisfaction forming a new minor group. This group will grow according the same pattern untill growth ceases and ....

  Question for those who know psychology?

  a little girl who is part of my family has the habit of always holding on to people's ear lobs, mainly with persons who are close to her whether they are a relative or not?.

  what are the causes for this type of behavor?.

  My experience runs back about thirty years. I had this dream of a little child pulling my ear. So I had to get hold of a lady and we had two children pulling my ears for a while. At least my children (20+25 yrs now) ceased it in due course. Now I am looking forward for grandchildren to do the same - I love children.

  D wiltshire I just wonder what on earth would here cause an adult to call psychology for help?

  50 years ago the watchtower made these comments regarding charity.

  it is quite interesting to read in the aftermath of the september 11 tragedy.. .

  This is exactly what I remember from forty years ago. I recall one Watchtower article that more or less classified The Salvation Army a mere charity movement and so forth. Coming to closer contact after thirty years it is astonishing to find that new light has emerged with the pace comparable to the speed of light. But it makes me wonder why it has very little to do with the Bible scriptures? Most of "the new light" I have run across deals with wordly issues and thus is just giving in under the pressure. Yet at the same time the whole society tries to be more and more closed as to the outer world.

  Remains me of certain mushrooms grown in dark and nourished with manure.
