I just read and compared both articles... The real one on the Duke website, and the yellow version in the Awake.
There is really no surprise factor anymore. I am getting used to seeing the selective quoting that the WTS uses to prove their point.
i tried posting this a few weeks ago but it didn't work.
the jul 08 awake has this to say in the "watching the world" section.
more harm than good?

one of the more asinine practices of jws is to turn someone's funeral into a borg infomercial.
every single jw relative i've had who has passed away, had an infomercial funeral.
hardly anything was ever said about them as people, except of course in how they served the borg.. "sister x was a very pugnatious woman, even into her late 80's, as i'm sure her family can attest to.
I told my wife that I want a secular funeral.
I want my real friends to come and drink Irish Whiskey and talk about how great I was... (LOL) and have a big party.
...guess I'll never know for sure.

I want to bring it back to life!
kw - Welcome to JWD...
at one hall i attended for serveral years had a lawn covering large man-made burms with trees and bushes.
it was a difficult yard to mow and maintain.
i have often wondered why we all pitched in and worked so hard for nothing.
tfjw - I think they were called "2-day Kingdom Halls" back then, but they were changed to "4-day", and eventually to "Quick Builds".
I have wasted many weekend days cutting grass and trimming hedges at the various halls I have attended. At one point I even let them use my lawn equipment. Bad idea... When I would take my truck over to the hall, people would rummage through it, looking for trimmer line, or edger blades, or gasoline. That used to really irritate me when there was a big "cleanup day" and people would just go into my truck and take gasoline. It's not like there weren't gas cans at the hall, they just assumed they could take what I had brought from home.
i was depressed yesterday because i put in the first $40.00 tank of gas.
(i drive a toyota matrix -- i'm sure most people should think i should shut up now ...) .
i was hoping you guys could make me feel grateful for only having to pay $40.

i heard a while back of a study that was done some years ago.
evidently, they took children preschool or kindergarten, don't remember which, and told them that they could have either 1 piece of chocolate now, or if they waited till the end of the day they could have two.
they kept track of which kids took the immediate chocolate and which ones held out for two.
Who did the study? It sounds bogus to me.
There are so many factors that contribute to mental illness and indebtedness, that it would be impossible to unilaterally associate them with childhood behavior.
Unhappiness, and overall success are such vague concepts that I doubt they would be factored in the results of a scientific study.
There must be more to it...
John, did you read about this in "Watching the World"?
i wind up sitting next to a friend of my wife.
the hall, but has no idea why.
nobody is doing the worldwide work except jw's.
Right after Jesus dispatched his disciples to go 2 by 2 into the cities to preach, he said the following:
(From the KJV)
Luke 10:7 - And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
brief historical recounting.... 3rd generation of 4 generation jw family.
elder for three years.
realized "the truth" wasn't in september of 2004. tried to fade by moving from michigan to southern california in june of 2005 with my (then) 17 year old daughter (who eventually left the organization herself.
Confession - I am glad it went well for you.
so i was thinking the other day about how the jdubs always mock the catholics for baptizing infants who can't make a true commitment to god so the sybol of dedication is empty.
well, as anyone who's been in the org knows there is a culture of pressuring teenagers to get baptized.
if u r over 12yo it is a question that is constantly asked.
The funny thing is, Jesus was 30 when he was baptised... I was around 30 when I started to realize how insane the JW faith really is.
Maybe that's why they don't want anyone to wait that late to commit.
How can they hold a 14 old responsible for making such a life altering descision?
