Holiday questions
by searchingforfriends ini have been thinking about some things, and realized i can't remember ever being given good reasons for not celebrating certain holidays... i was wondering if anyone here can help out with this.
jw's like to complain about origins of certain holidays and have come up with a bunch of reasons why they are bad, (such as birthday's and christmas) but there are others that all i've ever heard is just not to take part, or that jehovah doesn't like it.
even though i was "raised in the truth" i can't remember ever hearing why.....

Thanks everyone for your input. All of this seems like such a stretch to me... lol I even have looked online to find origins of these holidays and have found very little that is actually "pagan"... So it makes me wonder where they get this stuff? And as it has already been pointed out, almost everything has a pagan origin if you look hard enough, so what gives them the right to decide which things ppl can or cannot do?!

Hello everyone, I have been thinking about some things, and realized I can't remember ever being given good reasons for not celebrating certain holidays... So, My question is, does anyone know the "reasons" why they can't celebrate the following holidays? I just don't understand why they are supposedly bad. The only thing I can come up with is that they are fun.... lol New Years Mothers Day Fathers Day Thanksgiving

Cognac, It's not too late to have those relationships with your non JW family. I have begun to have a relationship with my granny and am just starting to learn how my mom becoming a JW affected her life. She felt like she lost her daughter and granddaughter and from the sounds of it my mother wasn't very nice about it. I am now getting the other side of the story and a lot of things are starting to make sense. It is really sad that she had to endure that. I always thought that my grandparents didn't come to see us much because they didn't want to, now I know it's cause the few times they did come they were made to feel very uncomfortable. I'm sorry for the injustices that have been committed against the non JWs that lose their family to this cult, just try not to take the guilt for yourself. What matters most is what you do now that you know better. I hope you feel better. ~SFF

Exposure
by imissmaine init is has been quite disturbing reading all the stories on jwd.
it is truly sickening.. i am curious if anyone has pursued getting negative tv exposure about the jehovah's witnesses and their practices?.
for example, submitting an idea to oprah: https://www.oprah.com/plugger/templates/beontheshow.jhtml?action=respond&plugid=b2100004.

I think Dateline has done stories about child molestation among JW's in the past, it would be nice if they did one on the JW practice of disfellowshipping and the families that are broken as a result.

Purple Triangle
by Wordly Andre ini was watching a documentry last week and it was about concentration camps, i was not paying much attention because i was on my computer at the same time, however they were talking about the different badges of shame that were put on the prisoners shirts.
when they got to the purple triangle it was said that, that meant the prisoner was a religious fanatics, now growing up the jw's always said that the purple triangle was for jw's, i am not saying they were not in the camps but, there were other religous groups that the members were taken by the nazi's because of their religious beliefs not just the jw's.
not too long ago i was talking to a jw about this same topic, he said the purple triangle was only for jw's and went on about the abuse and killings suffered because the nazi's targeted jw's.

That's really interesting, I never knew that it was for more than JW's. Here's what I've found so far, I'm sure there's more.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_triangle
The purple triangle was a concentration camp badge used by the Nazis to identify several unorthodox non-conformist religious groups known as "Bibelforscher" ("Bible scholars").[1][2] Among these were mainly Jehovah's Witnesses, as well as a few members of Witness splinter groups, and members of the Adventist, Baptist, and New Apostolic movements.[3]
