Excellent post about your father, John.
And there is something satisfying in physical labor. When one exerts himself strenuously all day long and can look back at his accomplishments at the end of the day, a feeling of honor mixed with tiredness settles upon him. Modern society breeds all manner of mental diseases, depression, and apathy. I sometimes wonder if a slight move away from machines and hurriedness would increase our mental well being. Too many of us want things immediately, and we don't want to put effort into getting them, and many look down upon physical exertion.
Whatever my differences with dad, he was a good man, and I respect his callouses.
I really think you have something there about the mental issues.
Every spring I get blisters on my hands and feel ashamed; I vow to never go through another winter not doing enough work to keep my calluses and every year I lie. I hate those blisters - they tell on me. Calluses are, indeed, something to be respected.

NeonMadman:
Thanks for providing all that information; it was just stunning to me. Don't even know what to say about it.
In light of their prior statements, though, I have to wonder whether it was angels who conveyed the "new light" that they weren't receiving angelic revelations...

What's "The Perfect Storm" To Become One of Jehovah's Witnesses?
by minimus inwhat ingredients go into making someone become a witness?

For me, it was:
Growing up in a mainstream religion I knew wasn't true.
Wanting to know the bible, but no one's churches were teaching them much of anything about it.
Being at a very low point in an abusive relationship and begging God to help me and I would do anything.
Answering the door to a small child reading a verse from the Bible - I couldn't be rude and just send them away. The woman knowing her Bible and flipping it here and there as I fired my questions. Wow, I wanted to know the Bible like that!
Her showing me in MY bible that God had a name; my religion had not taught me that and I was mad and felt a fool.
They would come to my house every week for free? Yes!
But wait; not yet.
As bad as I wanted to learn the bible, I could never be a witness and knock on strangers' doors, so I was going to say no. But I had a small child and I knew I owed it to her to teach her truth, whatever that may be, and she could make her own life-or-death decision. In the end, that's why I accepted; I was never going to be a witness myself - too cowardly.
I loved the meetings. So different from the churches where some angry preacher was upset or emotional all the time; preaching the same old sermon. We got to participate. I know the born-ins see it differently, but it was very exciting for me.
There were many red flags and I was in and out for many years. Finally, when I was estranged from most of my family, I was baptized.

The Watchtower is simply making things up!
They might be making things up, but I have a hard time thinking they have any imagination.
According to their own publications, they get their information through angels and through resurrected members of the "anointed" class.
Huh? I don't remember ever reading that.
If they're getting their information from angels how would they know if they were the angels that rebelled or stayed loyal?
True.
They comb through publications looking for support of their positions.
I can believe that.
I wish I could remember the context of the article. Just wonder why they would've thrown something like that in there. Someone probably wrote a letter asking why God didn't answer prayer or something; it was probably another opportunity for them to blame us.
Thanks so much to each of you for your replies.

Mmmm, fresh baked bread with real butter; if I could only have one food the rest of my life, this would be it. Anyone ever bake sourdough bread?
I'll never forget, years ago, my mother was given a recipe for sourdough. You had to start with "culture". She went to every store in town asking if they had any culture. Hee hee. She'd die if she knew I ever told that on her.
