I would have to say men with English accents still melt me into a little puddle. But I have to qualify that -- not all English accents sound attractive. A "John Steed" accent vs. a Bob Hoskins accent, if you know what I mean. The accent I like the least would probably be American New York brooklyn, followed by a German accent.

The Best And Worst Accents In The World
by Englishman inwell, obviously we english don't qualify on that score as we simply do not have any accent whatsoever.. but i do like the mid to south us accent, it's very warm and hospitable.
i'm not too keen on the accent of the eastern europeans, it seems harsh and bombastic.

"About Schmidt" slow...
by breeze ini just viewed this film.... "about schmidt" ... this movie is mildly entertaining....it moves very slow and seems to be unfocused completely at times....some times funny.... jack is jack, as always he is good, and kathy bates is ok, nude scene warning...kathies ass....i read reviews that see him as a oscar candidate for this film...that is certainly a stretch !!!!.
howard hessman is in it, and he is very good, but not a big role, i love him from the old cincinnati radio sitcom???.
i give it...3 stars out of five....

Joannadaddy,
Well said. "About Schmidt" was an absolute gem of a movie. The characters are lifted from real life -- they're your own family (unfortunately), your next door neighbors, or your best friend. I so enjoy these types of movies that portray people realistically -- real slices of life.
I was absolutely absorbed in the movie. Didn't find myself being jarred even once because someone was miscast as I often am in the typical Hollywood movie staring Sandra Bullock or Brad Pitt or annoyed that the script was unrealistic. It's one of those rare movies that didn't seem ACTED.
Like you said, the movie is not for everyone.
For those of you who don't mind subtitles, one of the best foreign films out on video is "Bread and Tulips." If you're looking for a "feel good" flick, check it out.

My mother (coldhearted JW she is)
by YellowLab inthis is really bothering me, and i have a need to vent.
is it normal for grandparents to not take an active interest in their grandchildren?
my mother is still a dub, and i faded away about seven years ago.

Yellow,
Your mother's coldness toward your children probably has more to do with her own nature than whether she's a dub. She sounds a lot like my mom actually, who had 5 children but is one of the least maternal women I've ever known. Now that I'm an adult and have more perspective, I don't hold it against her. The ironic part is she's a great mom to me now that I'm grown, very generous, caring, and supportive. But she is simply one of those people who CANNOT relate to children and doesn't know what to do with one, so she gets very anxious and can't deal with the normal stresses of child-rearing very well. When we were growing up, she yelled a lot and said things that were inappropriate to us. The spankings often got out of control.
Needless to say, when I had my own children, she never offered to babysit until they were well past 5 years old. And then, I didn't ask because she made my kids uncomfortable and they would beg me not to have grandma babysit.
Just accept the fact that some women aren't maternal, though they may be great people in other ways.

What was the worst outfit you wore?
by outbackaussie inremember going to conventions during the mid 80's?
sisters all dolled up in lolly-wrapper dresses of sparly taffeta with balloon sleeves and brothers strutting about with shiny grey siuts with narrow lapels and black leather ties?
ooooh what a look that was!

I don't know if things have changed, but when I was a teen in the late 60's, my friends and I would spend weeks prior to an assembly sewing our little butts off. I had to have a NEW outfit for every single day of the assembly WITH coordinated shoes and accessories. If any one of us wore a recycled dress, we had to endure the sneers of the other girls. LOL! We viewed the assemblies primarily as fashion shows and were dressing in the hopes of attracting boys! Then we would go the assembly halls and pretend to act so pious and spiritual.
I wonder if the dub girls still do this. Hmmmm.....

Was it normal to have so many meetings?
by JH inhow many meetings a week, do you think we should have had in order to be reasonable and not overdone?
maybe 30 or 40 years ago, when woman didnt work, or when life was a little easier, that all these meetings every 2 days was ok, but today with life being so stressful, and with all the time it takes commuting, is it normal to still have so many meetings.
nothing changed in the last 50 years as far as meetings go.

JH,
I just finished reading CoC so it is fresh in my mind. I agree with Franz's belief that the organization will never change in its core beliefs. And to cut back on the number of meetings is diametrically opposed to one of those core beliefs that insist that people constantly "do more", not less.
Franz points out time and time again how the GB blinds itself to its own cruel policies, and complaints by elders at Bethel or letters from the rank of file have done nothing to change these over the years. These men are drunk on the power they have over people's lives and are not there to be reasonable and loving.

My entire family have been "Buffy" fans since the second season.
Vivamus,
I don't want to reveal anything since you are a year behind but there have been some interesting developments with Buffy and Spike. I think you'll be pleased.
Does anyone watch "Angel", too? That is my other "must watch" show.

Asperger's Syndrome
by Mulan inhas anyone heard of asperger's syndrome?
i was doing research the other day, for someone, and came across this disorder.
in reading it, i am positive both my youngest son and his wife have it.

Oh, Mulan, I forgot to mention. The article said that few people with Asperger syndrome have ALL the characteristics. Most only have some.

Mulan,
"Wired" magazine (computer oriented) had an article about Asperger's about 1 year ago. Asperger people are very high functioning autistics. Sad thing is that two people with Aspergers may very well produce a truly autistic child who functions on the lower end of the spectrum.
The article goes on to say that cases of autism have exploded in the Silicon valley, where so many software engineers are employed. The social agencies can barely handle on the cases that have emerged in the last ten years.
As for Asperger syndrome, maybe that is nature's way of providing variety in the human race. People with these characteristics are almost solely responsible for the PC and its abundance of benefits for the rest of us merely because they are so focused and obsessive, not wasting a lot of energy on social outlets. How many other advancements would we be without with everyone fit within the "normal" range? Just because they don't fit in with the vast majority, does that mean that they necessarily have a deformity?

Orange Butterfly
by MrMoe ineveryday, when things get a little hectic, i escape to a little spot outside the school where i work so i can sit, relax, and have a ciggie.
for the last two weeks, every single time i go outside and sit down (enjoying the beautiful cool weather for a change) there has been an orange butterfly that lands on some wildflowers not 2 feet from where i sit.
today, i went outside again, he wasn't there (as usual) and the very moment i sit down, there he comes flying in.

There are times, when I have been hard at work in my little cubicle and I realize I haven't even looked out the window all day. This is the time of the year when occasionally, as I leave to go home at the end of a long day, I'll be greeted by a spectacular sunset! It catches me off guard every time and makes me wish I spent more time outdoors than I do.
Darn...I just looked out the window. No sunset today : (

No sunday school for witnesses
by freedom96 ini have had the opportunity to visit a few non-denominational churches since i have left the witnesses.
i have talked to people who attend other ones, and obviously find great differences between those and witnesses.. a huge mistake, among many of course, in my opinion, is that there is no programs for kids.. an infant is expected to make all the meetings.
a toddler is expected to go, and sit still.

Here's the way I see it:
1. The GB has always consisted of old men who live in their own little world and are completely out of touch with the emotional needs of the R&F. Most of them are single or married without children. They have no real concept of families at all, though the WT gives lip service to "family values." In addition, I think they actually resent the fact that children are born into the borg to begin with since they have published so many articles advising people to remain single and devote their lives to magazine selling. So they are not going to make any special concessions to people who are raising families.
2. They are always going to do the exact opposite of what other religions do, even if it's like cutting off their noses to spite their faces. A program tailored for children is EXACTLY what they need because they lose teenagers right and left who are bored out of their skulls from the mind-numbing material and lack of activities suited for their age group. But they will never admit they're wrong about this. NEVER!
The GB is like a bunch of old pointy-eared Mr. Spocks who have no idea of what it's like to let go and be human. Idiots!
