i'm really distraught about the fact my 23 year old daughter is ready to abandon a potential career in writing where her talent lies, and become a jehovah's witness.
i banned the study being held in our home, but it only hurt my relationship with my daughter, who screamed at me "i pay to live here and i'm not hiding, you're sabotaging my relationship with god!
" so i gave in.

thinking back on some other posters' threads and experiences, combined with some things i've read on silent lambs, and adding in my own personal history, it would seem that there was/is a lot of maternal abuse going on in the jw community.. brizzzy talks about her hellishly abusive mother.. the_raisin also started a thread about her psycho mom.. my mother was an absolute diabolical tyrant.
i firmly believe that she got a sick thrill out of beating me bloody with a belt, or whatever object was at hand, from spatulas & wooden spoons to cast-iron frying pans.. it just makes me wonder if the wts's stance on women being powerless, second-class citizens has anything to do with their women lashing out violently?.

My mother was very physically abusive. Once she started beating me, which was often, it seemed she couldn't stop. She continued to beat me because I was crying and she would not stop until I stopped crying.
She did not beat my brother who was 2 yrs younger. Nor did she beat my 3 younger sisters (10, 13 & 18 yrs younger than me).
I was talking about this with my pioneer SIL. She was not a born in and did not believe me that the WTS encouraged this behavior. She did research it and later told me she saw how someone could interpret what the literature says as encouraging the 'discipline'. I told her I held my father responsible to some degree because he didn't protect me. SIL told me she talked to him about it and he told her he did try once and mom wouldn't speak to him or have anything to do with him until he gave in and let her have her way.
I believe she resented the fact that I ruined all her plans for her life. They were both pioneering when they got married and I came along 9 1/2 mos later. She had wanted to continue pioneering and be a missionary. I put a stop to all of that.
If I ever asked to go somewhere with the other kids in the congregation her answer was an automatic "NO". She did give in later and let me go but I always had to hear NO first thing.

I over heard my JW mother and JW sister talking about what a waste college is and then an hour later my mother was telling me how good it is that her grandson/my nephew/JW sister's son has such a good job at the hospital.
I said yes, and he wouldn't have it if he had not gone to college and gotten his degree. That hushed her up for a while.
it's my birthday today, i'm 63. i know your thrilled to hear that and are likely to party hard with wild abandonment, but please be careful not to worship me.

was there any evidence that the witnesses are still attracting a large crowd of "newly interested ones" (to use their awful phrase) or even complete strangers drawn in by the door-to-door work.. i hear lots of comments about how poorly attended some of the weekly meetings in the halls have now become, so i'm curious about what you guys may have seen when you attended in the past day or so.
Took my mother to the doc today and on the way she was telling me what a huge crowd they had last night. Standing room only.
They always use a community center next to the sheriff's dept and 2 or 3 congregations all meet together. That's probably why it looked like so many people there.
Then she said the number of annointed is really low. I said, "No, it's not. It's up to about 11,000 now." Then she mumbled something about some being replaced. I explained to her if you have 2 of something and lose 1 and replace it with 1 you still have 2. She thought for a minute then said, "Well, I guess we're not supposed to try to figure it out." I told her, Yes you are. It is supposed to make sense.
On a side note, I had my GPS on giving us directions to the doc's office. She was fascinated. She kept asking how it knew where we were.
She finally said it must be DEMONIZED to know all that!! (she's about 84)
i just started reading book 1 of the left behind series.
it is very interesting.
i remember when the jw's used to condem these books as well as a lot of others.
I read them several years ago and thoroughly enjoyed them as a science fiction story. I also read the kids version of the story and that was interesting because it followed the same story line but from the kids point of view.
A funny side note - after I read them all, I sold them at a mostly JW (family) yard sale.
so i don't understand it seems to me from the posts that i have read just about everyone is disassociated.. just wondering if that's true or if i am not the only one on here still within the organization..

Look into that beautiful little face and tell him/her if he ever gets seriously hurt and needs a blood transfusion, you will faithfully follow the Governing Body and let him die.
Something that affected me negatively when I was a child was knowing my mother and father would without a doubt kill me or allow me to die.
I always remembered the story of Abraham ready to kill his son as a sacrifice to god. I always knew my father would be willing to kill me too. Do you want your child growing up knowing you too would be willing to do this?
I watched my uncle lie in a hospital bed and die a slow death instead of receiving a blood transfusion. My ex-husband's mother bled to death in the hospital with a stomach ulcer because she would not accept a blood transfusion.
By the way, I successfully faded 3 decades ago when I was about 30. My father died 2 yrs ago believing to his last breath that he would never die because that's what the Watchtower organization had been telling him since he was a child. He was born in 1914. My mother sees Armageddon in every thunderstorm, tornado, earthquake, etc. It is very sad to watch a doomsday or End Time cult control your family.

i'd like to hear from anyone who was disfellowshipped but fully intended to go back as soon as possible and how that worked out or didn't.
i'd like to hear how soon you went back to meetings, how many letters requesting reinstatement you wrote, how you were treated, and how long it took you to get bitter and jaded.... or in the off chance you had a positive experience, what exactly happened.. really struggling here... thanks!.
My nephew was DFed 5 yrs ago. He didn't like that none of his friends would speak to him so he got a copy of the Elder's secret book and read up on what the elders were expecting. He wrote a letter requesting to be reinstated after about 6 months. They denied his request. He had to wait and he wrote another letter a year after being DFed. That time they finally let him back in. He did go to most of the meetings during that time and sat at the back of the hall like a good little sheep.
I would point out that while he was DFed he did read Crisis of Conscience and everything else he could about the organization so he knew it was not the "Truth". He was just playing their game. He did finally get reinstated and went to a couple meetings but then started missing most meetings. His JW friends talked to him again and that is all he wanted in the first place. Against the elders' wishes he went to medical school and is doing great and now has a beautiful 'worldly' girlfriend. He attends assemblies occasionally but he rarely attends any regular meetings.
