I just looked up the websters definition of brainwash -to effect a radical change in beliefs by intensive indoctrination. I suppose I would have to go with that definition rather than make up my own .For some reason I always considered brainwahing to include physical and psychological torture .So I would have to change my opinion. According to websters the jw can be accused of brainwashing without any further arguement . THanks for making me look it up and get the facts

Top STUPID criticisms of the WTS
by JanH inthere are certainly enough valid criticisms of the wts and the jw religion, but a significant number of often-repeated criticisms of the religion are, imnsho, just ludicruous and serves to take attention away from the real issues.
significant problems with the wts includes, but are not limited to, the shunning policy, the blood issue and of course the corporate policy of hiding child molestors.. here is a list of criticisms of the wts that i find particularly annoying to see:.
russell was a freemason (or, even worse, the wts is part of some other large-scale conspiracy like the illuminati).

I disagree with the term brainwash myself ,I don't believe they use any form of hypnotism. In fact I disagree with their policy of studying 6 months before being baptized a christian.I think they do use brow beating and peer pressure to influence church members ability to question the teachings .Let's face it if they say jump they want you asking how high. There have been centuries though, of religions using scare tactics to ensure patronage and control over their flock but as far as I could tell they don't use the old hell fire teachings that were previously used even though there is alot of the criticism for the jw fear of armageddon on this board..The jw do not use the tactic of pentecostal religion and do not claim to perform faith healing in fact they are very low key to the point of obscurity. As far as being a cult I believe all religion are cults and as mentioned in many replies so far ,most organized groups could qualify as a cult .

I for one can agree that some critisism is unjust .you made some good points .I often hear the remarks ,especially around here that the jws play down jesus making him less of an important figure than he is .as far as I could tell they are fanatical about christianity to the point of blind obediance to anything their governing body dictates under the belief that they are invisibly directed by spirit beings from heaven and jesus being the main figure that is calling all the shots. I can see that alot of angry hurt people would sit around making up lies but (let the reader use discernment) with my personal experience with these people sometimes it is hard to tell what is fabrication and honest ovbservation.

Don't tell anyone...
by dmouse inaccording to my son, at friday's convention in nottingham the brothers were advised once more about the dangers of the internet.
but there was a new twist -- brothers were told that if they accidently saw apostate information they were to keep it to themselves and not discuss it with other brothers and sisters.
it seems that the internet really has 'em scared.

Conventions at Yankee Stadium
by Kenneson ini became a jw in 1958, but was unable to attend the large convention at yankee stadium and the polo grounds in new york.
i understand that there were also two other large conventions held there in 1950 and 1953. anyone in this forum attend any of these?

Self-Gratification
by DINKY inokay, i'm not trying to start a fight - really!
but i've had this strange question/opinion and wanted to put it out for discussion.. we know how the wt says masturbation is wrong - which i believe is a load of "crud.
" i mean, everybody does it - it's perfectly natural, normal, human, and necessary (especially for men, crucial to being in a decent mood).. so, if jesus was a perfect human, do you all suppose he did?

Trying again for more door to door reasons
by Bang ini posted a question before regarding the way jws go door to door.
[luke 10:7.23] and remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages; do not go from house to house.
if the apostles didn't do it and jesus said not to, why do the jws do it en masse?

You can take it to mean anything you want I suppose but the premise for house to house preaching is definately there whether you contact people on the street corner or at their house would really make no difference but as far as home bible studies they are unique in that regard.I can see in the scripture in luke that the apostles were to stay in a house if only a friend of peace was residing there luke 10:5,6.Of course they would move along if they weren't welcome .Let's face it back then without tv and all the entertainment if someone wanted to hear a story they might be more apt to invite you to stay for dinner.I sure couldn't see that happening a whole lot today.

I always thought they were using the technique the apostles stated in Acts-20:20 also acts-5:42.Really part of my problem with the cult is they force the responsibility on women and children.I think that is completely wrong, all I can say is I'd be damned before I would let someone else tell my wife she has to knock on complete strangers doors (I"m not married but) just so she can please the elders and talk to her friends.I would have to declare my lordship over my house and remove any influence they may have over her.
