Question for elders/former elders - or anyone else who knows

this has been brought up here, so i want to see if i understand right.

as elders, did you read and study the bible thoroughly, or just the stuff that corresponds with the wt books and magazines?.

Good question.

I have only observations here. My Father has been an elder for 30+years. His knowlege of the Bible was zero until he started studying with the JW in the early 70's. Basicly the WT and publications gave him any knowledge he has. There was not any other 'outside' information on our bookshelf. With the following exceptions. A king James version of the Bible. This was allowed only because it was occasionally referenced by the WT Society.

Also, yes the JW's can turn to any book of the Bible and quote alot of scriptures, backwards and forwards.. kinda a byproduct of three meetings a week for years and years... but would have a hard time telling you the meaning on a parable without looking up a WT article on it first.. kinda telling.

More KS-10 'Shepherding' instruction LTR

while i at this moment don't have my hands on a scan and very dear 'anonymouse brother' wishes for the forum to know as a 'heads up'!.

here is the 'gist' of the ltr until we get an actual scan ..... apparently some elders want to have their books spiral bound.

the branch has sent out specific instructions that it can be done only by an elder for other elders.

They are always more interested in the legal ramifications of something they may teach then the sheep under their care. It's almost funny how they are constantly looking over their shoulders to see if anyone is watching.

Maybe they should stop doing things they should be ashamed of, and they wouldn't have to print instructions like this.

as a jw i was always taught "never to get into debate or argue with householders.".

you know what is interesting about that?.

the message i had when i went to your door was essentially "hello, what ever your current belief is... is wrong.

The JW's in general are very limited in the ability to debate a religon because they are not allowed to read 'outside' sources. They are only encouraged to use and read things printed from the WT Society.

Therefore lack any understanding of what a person may truely believe. One example is the belief of the Trinity..

You say your words to me are from my Lord. However he is unrecognizable in what you said. He does not speak to me in such a manner.

My Lord has been known and referred to by men, by the name Jesus, Imanuel, Yahshua, The Christ, messiah and others. I refer to him by a name that others can identify with. In this he finds no error.

To those who are searching for him. Believe in a God of love. That he sent us his son to show us this love. Pray to know him and he will allow himself to be found.

He says come to me, and you will find refreshment for your souls. He came to free the captives, to teach the truth and to show us the love of his Father. Many times he has been called such simple things as 'the word' or 'The light'.

His identity is not tied up in a proper rendering or translation of a name, but instead by what qualities he posesses. It is his qualities that in fact identify him as the Son of God. No different than someone saying to a child, you look just like your father.

God is love. Jesus is the demonstration of that Love and his followers are identified by love.... their love for him and for others.

Seek him and he will allow himself to be found. Then you can know all you want to know about him.

Don't put limits on his power to call to you by believing there are 'special keys' you must have to reach him. Our Lord did not teach such things. What he wants is in your heart.

My Lord is not limited in power in reaching his sheep by them knowing by which name to call him.

For He has said, My sheep will know my voice and follow me. (he did not say name). For those with an honest heart, he can reach them where they are, and help them to hear his call and his answers in many different ways, not always audibly. You see he knows his sheep by name.

While I did not say he does not have a name, I do not feel that it hold a 'special key' to finding him. He is not limited by such things.
