my dad studied but was a severe (really severe) alcoholic and my older brother studied but was never really into it.
I am still not understanding -- what would the elders have to do with a criminal matter?
Hello, if someone breaks into my house and steals stuff from me I am not going to go to an elder to report it. I am going to call the police. Same for if I were raped -- I would call the police, not the elders!

i've been feeling a burden on myself for the years that i have been out and i just don't know how to ease it.
i can't talk about the organization or the people in it to anyone... if i try i immediately feel sick and want to close up and just disappear.

Really, you sound like you have your act together with a nice job and boyfriend. College is so unnecessary -- so many of my friends have college degrees but no job resulting from their majors. My advice, if you don't like your retail mgmt job, then check out the vocational-type schools where in less that a year you can learn accounting, graphic design, cosmetology, health services, cooking -- tons of stuff. So you can still work and learn a new skill at the same time -- sometimes you can even do it on-line without having to go to classes.
BTW, sorry for the hard time you had as a young person in the truth. I have been in the truth for 10 years, so I didn't grow up in it (someone just knocked on my door and the rest is history). But from the experiences I have been reading about on this message board, a lot of JWs that were raised in the truth have had some hard times. For me, I am just happy to know what the truth is and I don't have any issues with "management". But I can see how you have been treated unjustly by the elders. I do hope that one day you will go back to the organization. But for now, maybe just try reading the Bible a little bit each day and I know you will get some happiness from that.

i wanted to say thank you to the wbts for enforcing a 'no-contact' rule on all those that have left the organization.. only by experiencing first-hand my former best-friends treating me like a complete stranger (see 'garbage') for standing up for my own beliefs was i finally able to tell the society 'good-bye' forever and not feel guilty about it.. i know this was not the wbts's intention from the alienation practice.
it's intention was to make me feel guilty and lonely enough to come back to them.
however, it has backfired on them and finally given me my freedom.. thank you, society, for lacking kindness and understanding.

So sorry for the bad things that happened to you. But why didn't your mom call the police about the sexual assaults when you were between 9 and 12???? And what about when your husband was physically abusive to you -- why didn't YOU go to the police and have him arrested? The elders at the KH are not police chiefs that can go an arrest a perpetrator. Well I don't have all the facts and don't wish to put you down because obviously you have had a hard life, but whenever I have had problems regarding criminal matters, I have taken it to the police station, not to the Kingdom Hall. I don't see how the two places are even remotely related.

The year 1914, which is the year that the Gentile Times (aka Appointed Times of the Nations) ended, was determined though a study of the Bible along with no doubt some holy spirit given to the brothers that were able to discern this information.
There are quite a few scriptures involved in coming to the year 1914, one of them from Ezekiel about "Lifting off the crown and it will be no one's until he who has the legal right comes". So that is the starting point, which was 607 BC, when Jerusalem fell to Babylon. Then another significant scripture is from Daniel chapter 4 which showed the appointed times of the nations would be "seven times". Then to figure out what the seven times means we need to go to Revelation chapter 12 which notes that 1,260 days are 3-1/2 times. Making the 7 times equal to 2520 days. So doing the math, 607 BC plus 2,520 days comes to the year 1914.
Studying the Bible is one of my most satisfying endeavors. It never gets boring for me.

I googled "2009 kingdom hall meeting schedule" and wound up here. I missed the meeting (overslept) when they read the letter and haven't seen the letter posted on the KH bulletin board yet, so I wanted to know what the letter actually said. So that's how I found this website.

Yeah, like I really want my ungrateful kids to honor me one whole day a year with a stale box of chocolates and a greasy meal at Red Lobster. Then I suppose the other 364 days they can feel justified in being disrespectful and rude to me because they "honored" me on that one day.

Just watched it and it looks like the guy Pat is a sarcastic jerk. He made no logical argument with the brothers about why he wouldn't want to appeal the disfellowshipping decision. The brothers seemed pretty nice and they offer Pat the opportunity to formally appeal the decision -- no matter that Pat did or didn't receive his three letters he can still appeal. Then for Pat to say that well if the brothers are guided by holy spirit then how could they have made a mistake that required him having to appeal was pretty lame. The brothers are guided by holy spirit but as we know there are no burning bushes divinely appearing to the brothers these days. So mistakes can be made and have been made. Obviously, Pat doesn't have enough wisdom to discern these things or, more likely, he just enjoys trying the brothers. Well good luck with that, Pat!
i had been doing the "wt is a cult thing" with the wife for three months, while looking for insight on jwd, and a few of you wisely suggested that i just back off before i lose my wife.
didn't think much of it at first, but i relunctantly heeded the advice.
well as soon as i did, the flds scandal followed by the other cult guy showed up, and then her favorite show (law & order) did 2 cult like storylines that we watched together.
Regarding the disfellowshipped sister and the flat tire article -- that was from the August 1, 1974 WT. And the article did say the right thing to do was to help the ds'd sister with her flat tire. The article was about exercising balance regarding disfellowshipped brothers and sisters. And the flat tire scenario was used in the article to show that it is cruel and inhumane to treat disfellowshipped ones badly. Here's the paragraph:
" But consider a less extreme situation. What if a woman who had been disfellowshiped were to attend a congregational meeting and upon leaving the hall found that her car, parked nearby, had developed a flat tire? Should the male members of the congregation, seeing her plight, refuse to aid her, perhaps leaving it up to some worldly person to come along and do so? This too would be needlessly unkind and inhumane. Yet situations just like this have developed, perhaps in all good conscience, yet due to a lack of balance in viewpoint."
I've had my share of car problems and the brothers (and sisters) have always volunteered to help me out -- whether to fix a flat, give me a jump, or give me a ride home.
