I recently had a bottle of Alba beer, brewed in Scotland. It's flavoured with Scot's Pine and Spruce. It's like Christmas in your mouth. There are some stunning Scottish ales. Sampled a lot of them on a visit a couple of weeks ago.

To Christmas or Not to Christmas (inspired by Watersprout's DA thread)
by Mad Sweeney inmy wife and kid want to do christmas but i don't.
i am not against it but i have no reason to celebrate the holiday.
i'll get the kid some presents, and maybe my wife, but is that alone really "celebrating christmas?

We're only out about 2-3 years. But I love Christmas. I don't believe in Jesus, but I still enjoy the celebrations. The pagan stuff actually makes it better. I feel a huge draw to the Winter Solstice. Something inside me feels the flow of time with the long shadows. I also think that the tree and the lights brighten a dark time of year.
I won't do Santa. We put the presents under the tree a week or two before Christmas. I'm crap at delayed gratification but it's alot of fun. We don't buy expensive presents. It's just a nice time when we're all off work and we can be together as a family.
It's wierd when you are a born-in and you have no family tradition of celebrating the holidays, but we can make our own traditions. We spent our first Christmas with my sister and we saw some lovely things which we've adopted. It's one of the nice things about not being tied to a belief system that you can decide yourself what you want to include.

Was any of you leading a bible study when discovered the truth about the "truth"?
by Desilusionnee ini ask because i'm confronted to that and i really don't know what to do.
i always pointed out that the bible and not the book we are studying together is god's word, but now i really don't know any farther.. the 2nd problem is that we don't only study the bible she is now a friend of mine, our children are of the same age?
were some of you in the same situation?

I was, and I was quite honest with the study about why I was leaving. However, the indoctrination had been too deep already and so the study is still attending meetings two years later.
I did visit most of my return visits and told them "the truth". I am still friends with some of them.
You do need to be honest, but be cautious enough so you can cover your tracks. Drop in a few of your concerns, and tell them to research it for themselves.

DC 2010 Release - The Origin of Life and its many misquotes
by Designer Stubble ini have just started working my way through the new publication the origin of life 5 questions worth asking.
it is completely appalling.
it is at the very most six grade level and just the first references i verified (which most dubs dont do) have been taken out of context, are completely misquoted or in the example of using the encyclopedia britannica a dated version is used rather than the most recent one, to align with what they want to write, rather than aligned with the newest research.. .

Quote from the photodrama of creation - The fifth day or epoch:
The conflict between Evolution and the Bible has been sharp. Nevertheless, unnecessary friction has been generated.
Only in respect to man does the Bible declare a special, direct creation of God. The statements of Genesis in respect to the lower creatures rather favor something along the lines of specialized Evolution. God said, "Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the Earth." (Genesis 1:20,21.) This is exactly in harmony with our scientific findings that the beginning of life came from the waters, and later extended to the birds, and later to land animals.

Teel - Back in 1914 the Bible Students were teaching that evolution is fact and in harmony with the Genesis account. Only in relation to man did they claim special creation. They still held this position in the 1920s.
Does anyone know why the did an about face on this? Or when exactly it changed?

Something else to note - on almost every page there is a footnote to say "this scientist is not a creationist and his remarks are not intended to say that he doubts evolutionary theory". Perhaps this is so when you comment on the misrepresentation, the JW can say "look they say here that that's not what the scientist meant". Perhaps it is to cover their legal asses. But why bother printing a brochure and then rendering it impotent with so many disclaimers?
They have also included a complete bibliography to make it even easier to track the misquotes.
I think they are trying to address some of the objections raised against the older creation books, but they can't make a case for creation without misrepresenting the scientists quoted.
The brochure may fool those who already believe, but anyone impartial who checks the references will not be deceived.

I'd have to go with number 9 - God killing David's innocent child. Unlike some of the other examples, where it could be argued that it was not God himself that killed the victims, the scriptures are clear that God killed the child.
I like the bears killing the children too.
42 for gore factor - Phineas drives his spear through the privates of a couple getting it on in a tent. Nice.

i love that story
i don't have anything quite so entertaining.
not long after i quit going to meetings, one over-zealous elder supported by two cronies tried to get a elders meeting to discuss my "apostacy". my dad is an elder in the same cong. all the evidence they had was hearsay, and they hadn't done the Matt 18 thing and spoken to me first. so my dad said no way, no elders meeting. this elder, the po and one other elder had their own meeting about it anyway. dad found out and hit the roof.
anway, a couple of months later the over zealous elder calls around with the CO to offer encouragement. towards the end, as they were leaving, i said "so xxxx, does CO know about this secret meeting you had with bro y and bro z to accuse me of apostacy? he got all defensive and flustered and said, we'll talk about it another time.
nothing happened for ages and i lost interest.
then a month or so later over zealous elder and his accomplice elder call to offer my wife encouragement. i had no real interest in it at this stage but i sat in on the conversation. before getting into the docrine stuff over zealous elder says to me - "last time you mentioned about this meeting, do you still want to talk about it?"
so i said" xxxx not really, i don't really think about it. you came hear to talk to my wife, so i'm happy to leave it."
he was happy to move on, when all of a sudden his accomplice (who had been silent up until now) pipes up and says - "i just want to say there never was such a meeting" i couldn't let that opportunity go.
so i said "ok accomplice elder, did you and over zealous, and the po have a meeting?" - "yes"
"ok, did you discuss me at it?" - "yes"
i left it at that - the great spanner just couldn't help but blurt out a big fat lie. what shred of credibility they had with my wife was completely shattered. and we hadn't even got into the UN stuff yet!
