"The one about the Almighty Sovereign of the Universe having special dealings with a group of socially awkward WASPs in Brooklyn." Yeah, what's up with that! It took over 100 years for a person of color to "ascend" to the GB, c'mon!!!

Good Thread!!!
Birthdays - The two scriptural references were shakey at best. In the OT scripture, it was prophecied that the guy would be killed anyway and in the NT scripture the king can do whatever he wanted, he just happened to order a killing on his birthday. Duh!
Modesty - If an organization wants to have a dress code, call it what it is, A DRESS CODE. Don't bend and twist the scriptures to make me feel like a whore for wearing fishnets or no pantyhose at all, bright colors, or, for the black sisters, braids and locs. One sister had the nerve to "counsel" another for wearing blue eyeshadow. Walking around looking like insurance agents (no offense, lol) doesn't make one separate from the world. If "satan's system" is so corrupt, why adopt the style of imperialist coporate drones?
1914 - Sure I could look up the scriptures, but I knew there was not enough there to justify the doctrine. Note to all current witnesses\faders: if it is "too deep" to understand, it's most likely a load of crap that your subconcious mind is trying to reject.
Don't go to other places of worship - This is an easy way to piss someone off. The scriptures used to justify this doctrine contrast Christianity with idol worship. That comparison is highly offensive to Christians I know. How can I convince someone to visit the hall after insulting them?!
Marry only in the lord - I have personal experience with this one. While we were dating, I tried to convince my husband that we were unevenly yoked. When he told me he didn't worship Baal, I did not have a rebuttal. He then asked if my reasons were scriptural or "because they say so". After that I knew I was a slave to the borg and contemplated my exit.
Partaking of emblems - how often do you invite people to dinner but only allow certain ones to eat?

Intelligence + great personality (which includes kindness, compassion, and humor) + confidence (not to be confused with arrogance) = hawtness!
Lady Zombie said it best! That's what attracted me to my husband, who looks NOTHING like I my version of Mr. Right. Nevertheless, he's supposed to start training for a marathon and I look forward to the physical transformation

During a Public Talk about marriage, the speaker said something like, "how can a brother who's unfit to carry a microphone be a good husband". I knew that was a load of crap. There are plenty of men who are not Witnesses who are fine husbands, better than many in the borg! WTBS stipulations and moral character are NOT related!!!!

I Watched A Documentary On Jim Jones &The People's Temple & Thought of JWs
by minimus ini saw an unbelievable commentary on pbs last night about the reverend jim jones and his church.
the comparison to the witnesses that i was seeing reinforced that jws are truly a cult!
they are no different than the cultist in guyana.

This documentary made me think of JW's too. I was on high alert after noticing some similarities between the two groups. Sure Jim Jones was "progressive" where race relations were concerned, but that good work only lured his prey. Just like his rhetoric became increasingly frantic, so does the GB & FDS. There will be some real crazy stuff coming from them before it's all over.

DC Experiences - reality vs. perception
by sir82 inat a recent dc, an elderly sister was interviewed.
she recounted how she endured through many years of her husband's opposition, never giving up, until finally he relented.
eventually, he bacame baptized and joined her in the full-time pioneer work.. end of experience.

Man, I believed those experiences! How dare they guilt people into "doing more". By the way, I remember being moved to auxilliary pioneer after a CO talk. I felt awful during that month, doing stupid stuff to count time and I still didn't get 50 hours, only 38. But I knew I would not do that ever again!!! Something just felt wrong.

What's funny is that JWs who do know how to have a good time get counseled often.

Outgrow is a good way to put it. In my case it was a detour or temporary regression. I was brought up with a "freer" concept of God and worship, but I was successfully indoctrinated during my late teens/early twenties. Thank goodness I stayed in college (yes, I thought of quitting or at least transferring from the LUTHERAN university I was attending). Anyway, I had a nagging urge to research the quoted "secular sources" cited in the publications. Laziness and fear kept me from doing it. Deep inside I knew there was a strong chance of me leaving due to "apostacy". These last three years I went through the motions knowing that God is not preoccupied with knocking on doors, wearing beards, holidays, proms, rap music, etc. I had a problem with the disproportionate amount of attention given to the publications instead of the bible. Thank goodness I was questioned by someone who knew the bible better than I did and used the JW proof texts to prove me wrong. I was ETREMELY UPSET at first(satan is testing me LOL), until I began to use my selective critical thinking skills on my beliefs. But I think the nail in the casket was the September 2007 KM. With the exception of a funeral, I have not attended a meeting since.
