Worldly person tries to call HQ for convention info.
by AuntBee inat someone's suggestion, i tried calling a few phone numbers to get more detailed convention info.
i kind of want to tape the rest, it feels so incomplete, and i wanted to hear the rest for my own research.
basically i wanted to know which one a certain congregation would be attending.

At someone's suggestion, i tried calling a few phone numbers to get more detailed convention info. I kind of want to tape the rest, it feels so incomplete, and i wanted to hear the rest for my own research. Basically i wanted to know which one a certain congregation would be attending. (so i could avoid certain people. it would not be good) So after being re-routed several times to different people, the guy on the phone first asks me if i'm a sister. In a VERY suspicious tone. I simply said no, and explained that i wanted to find out which convention some friends of mine would be attending. (true) He just gave me the dates of the conventions, which i already knew. And then asked AGAIN if i was a sister! ROFL. I again admitted.......no. THen he said, that's all the information i can give you.
He made me feel like some creepy criminal, trying to do something wrong. Like infiltrate the nearest Masonic Lodge. Sheesh, where's the love-bombing? LOL.

flyinghigh: " My philosophy is either expensive or looks expensive for little or nothing." ROFL, that's great! --- That's so neat that your son and grandson love to thrift shop! I think it helps teach the value of money too.
Slimboy: I'm jealous of your being able to make a living selling books. One of my best friends and i envision ourselves being 2 little old ladies with a small used bookstore, discussing all the books with those who come in, and dispensing sage advice about life. LOL (you know i mean in like....15 years or so.... we're not quite little old ladies yet.)

a book for a few dollars: "The Greatest Book on DIspensational Truth in the World" by Clarence Larkin. 1918, dust cover intact. First of all, gotta love that title! Who would name their own book that? Do you think he was a jerk in real life? It has a few pages of those pyramid charts in the back, i kid you not. Creeps me out.
an original Risk game for $2.99 from Goodwill just a few weeks ago. Original wooden pieces, instructions, mint condition. My brother in law wanted it, so i gave it to him, as i'm not a Risk fan. I just thought it looked pretty interesting.
I have tried to teach the kids how cool it is to shop at thrift stores. Some bought it, and some didn't.

The stores in our area are on a "friendliness" campaign. So, you go in , someone says "Hi, are you finding everything ok?" Then while you're shopping, that will happen again to you, usually at least twice. Then the cashier asks the same thing. Then the cashier asks do you need some help out. THen sometimes she asks - are you sure you don't need some help out? Then the bagger may also ask -- do you need some help out?
I"m a very friendly person, but at some point, i just start keeping my eyes low to the ground, so i can just get in there and out of there, thank you very much! I've got more fun stuff to do, like go to JW conventions, don'tcha know? sheesh!

The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs
by B_Deserter injust finished this book and it's a fascinating read about an agnostic author who decides to follow the bible as literally as possible for a year.
he grows a beard, wears white everywhere he goes, carries a staff and consults with leaders from almost every facet of judaism and christianity.
i highly recommend this book to everyone, religious or not.

I read that book, and LOVED it. I couldn't put it down; it was so interesting. It was informative, as well as hilarious! Some parts were moving. The author writes with candor about his thoughts and feelings, and the things he discovered about himself. His family and friends' reactions to what he's doing. Hehe, it makes me want to read it again. Fun and different book.

Purple Triangles - Symbol of JW faith?
by POs Son ini clicked on one of the google-ad sponsors on jwn, and saw the purple triangle on the http://www.servicesupplies.net/ website.
so help me understand this: is it ok for a jw to use the nazi symbol of a purple triangle to identify themselves, but using the cross is not acceptable?.
wow!.

This is very interesting, because our JW friend wore some kind of purple sash thing at our school's high school graduation, that no one else had. I THink it did have a triangle too! I figured it was JW related, but had no idea how. I'm sure it was not his idea, JUST ONE MORE THING TO MAKE HIM FEEL WEIRD AND DIFFERENT after all he went through in high school.

by drew sagan inthe recent threads by pistoff got me thinking that some youtube vids of the hard line positions being taught from the platform would be pretty cool.

I will be attending here in Tucson. A researcher asked me to tape it for him, but i had never thought about video cam in big purse. ! I was about to pick up a micro recorder. I might even transcribe the talks, as i love to type. -- What would be the reaction if someone started video taping, especially someone without a name tag? um, just curious.

AGAIN with the college bashing
by Pistoff inok so the mate took good notes at the ca and here is the newest on "higher education:.
the usual bashing of motives: those who want great wealth, prestige and seek it in a college educationcollege graduates don't always get jobs in their fieldsdrugs, drinking and sex are "rampant" at collegesthose who want to "snatch us away" are near if we go to college (isa 54)if we seek a college education, we are not spiritual mindedthe most disturbing for me was this:.
those who choose college will not get blessings from jehovahand of course there was the obligatory interview with the college graduate who disdains the education whe received.. .

The 2 young witnesses i really care about are in college currently. (One is in a very high tech major, that will make big money. horrors!) I hope the org keeps up with this kind of talk. What effect does this have on those currently in college? IS there a chance it could cause them to re-evaluate and maybe even leave, even sooner than they would have otherwise? I hope so!
