A former Bethelites SAD testimony at the convention
by AuntBee ini was just typing some of the sessions out for someone (long story), but i heard the tesitmony again, of one of the brothers, who had served at bethel for 12 years.
the thing that was surprising, was that it was not a joyous testimony.
you can actually hear his sadness, and his voice breaking a few times, when he recounts coming back to "the system" (real world) from bethel, and being completely unprepared and untrained for a job, or to earn a living.

I was just typing some of the sessions out for someone (long story), but i heard the tesitmony again, of one of the Brothers, who had served at Bethel for 12 years. The thing that was surprising, was that it was not a joyous testimony. You can actually hear his sadness, and his voice breaking a few times, when he recounts coming back to "the system" (real world) from Bethel, and being completely unprepared and untrained for a job, or to earn a living. And this man was talking about it 5 years after that time, telling how he and his wife were able to survive, and then get to the point where finally now they are able to pioneer again. -- It had me wondering if this 'testimony' turned out to be not exactly what they were looking for.
Brother Gonzalez, I’m going to ask you the same questions. What adjustments have you made in view of the time? -- The adjustments started right after I left Brooklyn Bethel where I had served 12 years, 7 of those with my wife. But we knew that when we left, we were determined to get back into the full time service. But when we found ourselves back in the system, having to make a living, we struggled. We actually felt like fish out of water. We actually choked, and it was hard. (voice is breaking here , kind of teary. L ) But with a lot of prayer, and …..help from Jehovah, we survived. But ……..(hard to understand)…….we did it. (still voice is breaking during last sentence) But we knew that after 5 hard years, we were able to accomplish that goal, of being able to pioneer. --- SO, what are some of the benefits you’ve received from doing this? --- The benefits were being able to serve at Brooklyn Bethel. It’s allowed me experience first-hand Jehovahs organization in action. At the same time, being able to work with spiritual brothers built appreciation for Jehovah, and for the ……work we are doing today. At the same time the pioneering has built appreciation for the people and the work itself. At the same time it’s allowed us to reach out to the people – reach out to the English congregations, and down in Mexico, being able to help them out as well. ---- So, what are some of the joys that you are experiencing now? -- The joy I have now is being able to serve with my wife. Together, staying focused, which , working together, has allowed us not to allow the world to lull us to sleep, but concentrating on the more important things, that is the kingdom work. Staying busy and working hard for Jah’s organization has really been a blessing for us in the congregation. It’s a privilege to be serving Jehovah at this time. -- -Well, thank you both for sharing with us (clapping) (IT was an odd juxtaposition, with the interviewer being so upbeat, and the interviewee had obviously been through hell.....)
Another thing that was shocking to hear was the phrase earlier in the talk "Eagerly anticipating Armageddon"

Philip Schaff quote in the Watchtower? COOL! He's a Lutheran theologian/author from the 19th century. I think that quote is from his book on Christ. He also has a multi-volume tome on church history that is highly regarded. It is indeed srange that they would quote him in the WT, but wouldn't 'approve' or 'allow' Witnesses to read Schaff's works. :( I believe reading an excellent in-depth church history, would be extremely helpful in seeing the WT for what it is. Pointing to a few awful episodes in church history gives only a distorted view, as it leaves out the rest! Christians of all stripes really do stand on the shoulders of giants, not on the shoulders of a twenty-something who said he would now sit down and REALLY figure out the Bible for the first time in history! ROFL. William Miller, Joseph Smith, etc. did the same thing.
PS I'm not looking for an extended argument here, Schaff is one of my favorite authors, and i'm just basically commenting on the WT quoting him. I'm too menopausal to aruge about Christendom or church history today. THank you.

At someone's suggestion, i tried calling a few phone numbers to get more detailed convention info. I kind of want to tape the rest, it feels so incomplete, and i wanted to hear the rest for my own research. Basically i wanted to know which one a certain congregation would be attending. (so i could avoid certain people. it would not be good) So after being re-routed several times to different people, the guy on the phone first asks me if i'm a sister. In a VERY suspicious tone. I simply said no, and explained that i wanted to find out which convention some friends of mine would be attending. (true) He just gave me the dates of the conventions, which i already knew. And then asked AGAIN if i was a sister! ROFL. I again admitted.......no. THen he said, that's all the information i can give you.
He made me feel like some creepy criminal, trying to do something wrong. Like infiltrate the nearest Masonic Lodge. Sheesh, where's the love-bombing? LOL.

flyinghigh: " My philosophy is either expensive or looks expensive for little or nothing." ROFL, that's great! --- That's so neat that your son and grandson love to thrift shop! I think it helps teach the value of money too.
Slimboy: I'm jealous of your being able to make a living selling books. One of my best friends and i envision ourselves being 2 little old ladies with a small used bookstore, discussing all the books with those who come in, and dispensing sage advice about life. LOL (you know i mean in like....15 years or so.... we're not quite little old ladies yet.)

a book for a few dollars: "The Greatest Book on DIspensational Truth in the World" by Clarence Larkin. 1918, dust cover intact. First of all, gotta love that title! Who would name their own book that? Do you think he was a jerk in real life? It has a few pages of those pyramid charts in the back, i kid you not. Creeps me out.
an original Risk game for $2.99 from Goodwill just a few weeks ago. Original wooden pieces, instructions, mint condition. My brother in law wanted it, so i gave it to him, as i'm not a Risk fan. I just thought it looked pretty interesting.
I have tried to teach the kids how cool it is to shop at thrift stores. Some bought it, and some didn't.

The stores in our area are on a "friendliness" campaign. So, you go in , someone says "Hi, are you finding everything ok?" Then while you're shopping, that will happen again to you, usually at least twice. Then the cashier asks the same thing. Then the cashier asks do you need some help out. THen sometimes she asks - are you sure you don't need some help out? Then the bagger may also ask -- do you need some help out?
I"m a very friendly person, but at some point, i just start keeping my eyes low to the ground, so i can just get in there and out of there, thank you very much! I've got more fun stuff to do, like go to JW conventions, don'tcha know? sheesh!

The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs
by B_Deserter injust finished this book and it's a fascinating read about an agnostic author who decides to follow the bible as literally as possible for a year.
he grows a beard, wears white everywhere he goes, carries a staff and consults with leaders from almost every facet of judaism and christianity.
i highly recommend this book to everyone, religious or not.

I read that book, and LOVED it. I couldn't put it down; it was so interesting. It was informative, as well as hilarious! Some parts were moving. The author writes with candor about his thoughts and feelings, and the things he discovered about himself. His family and friends' reactions to what he's doing. Hehe, it makes me want to read it again. Fun and different book.

Purple Triangles - Symbol of JW faith?
by POs Son ini clicked on one of the google-ad sponsors on jwn, and saw the purple triangle on the http://www.servicesupplies.net/ website.
so help me understand this: is it ok for a jw to use the nazi symbol of a purple triangle to identify themselves, but using the cross is not acceptable?.
wow!.

This is very interesting, because our JW friend wore some kind of purple sash thing at our school's high school graduation, that no one else had. I THink it did have a triangle too! I figured it was JW related, but had no idea how. I'm sure it was not his idea, JUST ONE MORE THING TO MAKE HIM FEEL WEIRD AND DIFFERENT after all he went through in high school.
