the nbc show dateline is scheduled to devote this coming tuesday's show to child abuse within the jehovah's witness (jw) (or watchtower society)community.

i'm curious if you ever heard back from stark in response to your specific questions about his video at jw-media.org?

i read his article pretty carefully, and it seemed rather objective, although there were a few minor mistakes.. however, his thesis seemed to be that the jws will continue to grow at 4%.

this would seem to be a very poor time to be defending religions like the jws against the clear evidence that they don't handle molestation incidents in any way that could be considered moral or responsible.

there seems to be speculation that dr. stark might have been misquoted by the wts in his comments on molestation.

certainly, he might have been misled by the wts publications and by the spin put on by the organization.

however, at http://jw-media.org there is (a) a video interview with him and (b) a transcript.. now, janh has apparently raised concerns about "smearing" dr. stark.

rodney stark is the author of an excellent book dealing with the rise of christianity http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/0060677015/qid=1021992722/sr=2-3/ref=sr_2_3/103-7287281-5990248.. this book presents a number of logical arguments explaining why christianity succeeded so spectacularly in the centuries after christ.

so why is stark interested in the jws even to the point of appearing on their web page, making comments about the jws and child abuse?.

like all sociologists with a theory, stark likely wants a "laboratory" to study his ideas.

email stark's colleagues - those that dislike him will love it, and there will be many since not all univ.

of washington profs are as newsworthy as he, or have bestselling books, and those that like him will be concerned.

all it will take is an email header "does stark back jws in pedophile scandal?

alward's at it again - over in the scandals section he has published a letter from the wts saying - guess what?

"we only did it for the library card!

" apparently, joe is so keen on the wts, or on saving his own sorry face, that he wrote a fawning letter to brooklyn and they replied with the same hogwash - minus documentation of course - about how they affiliated as an ngo with the un only for "research.
