Did Einstein buck the trend of all intelligent people, in particular scientists, being atheists?
Apparently not.
james leuba conducted a survey of scientists in 1916. they were asked a whether they believed in a god who actively communicates with humanity, to whom humans can pray and expect an answer.. to believe in this sort of god would mean you were a theist.
if you're a deist, or agnostic, you believe there's a god but he's not necessarily interested in humans and we wouldn't pray to this god.. the results of this survey revealed that roughly 40% of scientists believe in this sort of god, making them theists.
40% didn't, making them either deists/agnostics or atheists.

yes, it sounds crazy doesn't yet.
if a religion went around preaching that today no one would take them seriously, and yet that is what the watchtower used to preach.
"the "time of the end," a period of one hundred and fifteen (115) years, from a.d. 1799 to a.d. 1914, is particularly marked in the scriptures.
This year's DC specifically mentions 1914 and the 'fact' that Jerusalem was destroyed in 607.
This flies in the face of their recent reluctance to even fart the words 1914.
My question is - "when will saying that the Time of the End started in 1914 start to sound ridiculous"? In what year do you predict the Watchtower will drop that year?
If they are going to drop it, it will need to be before or shortly after 2014. It already seems ridiculous.
i was reading the thread about hoboken's jc meeting and started thinking about the rule prohibiting recording devices in such meetings.
has anyone on the board tried to challenge this rule?.
on its face, the rule is absurd.
The stance of the elders - and many JWs I've spoken to - is that when you join a club you agree to abide by the rules. And yes, if you were baptised after 1986 (?) you publicly stated you were a Jehovah's Witnesses under the authority of the Watch Tower Society (although not in so many words). If you don't want to play by the rules, they put you out of the club.
Insisting on recording the hearing would result in you being disfellowshipped for having an unrepentant attitude.

Posessing or not possessing 'authority' to comment on the existence of God has no relationship to a person's personal belief in same (which is the topic of this thread: Are Most Scientists Atheists? ).
I agree. Sort of illustrates my reference to Dawkins putting forward his views on religion and the existence of God and his followers preaching the same gospel.

Do you believe in religion, LOL !
Absolutely. Religion and belief in God are completely different things. So many people (even those with high IQs) don't understand that.
many here have abandoned the bible as "the word of god" and there are numerous reasons for said abandonment.
however what i am interested in finding out is if the bible is the word of god, then what would you expect to find?.
If the Bible is the word of God I would find out that this Universe and Mankind had the misfortune of being created by a psychotic psychopath.
How's Rick doing these days?

i'm starting to sense a certain desperation among jws, that they feel that the great tribulation must start soon.
i think this is due, in many cases, to their own personal situation, financial or otherwise.. if the gt doesn't come soon, and these guys really start to suffer - what then?
the watchtower's promises that "jehovah would not forsake them if they put kingdom interests first" by skipping or dropping out of college, turning down promotions, "simplifying" their lives by selling their homes and moving to the hinterlands...will all prove to be meaningless.. if the gt doesn't come soon, and "jehovah" doesn't bail them out...then what?.
My parents are having their second new kitchen in 3 years fitted right now. Directly after they've had a new bathroom installed. Oh, and they're going on holiday to France for 3 weeks. They cheerily tell me and my DFd brother that they're spending our 'inheritance'. Any desperation they may feel is demonstrating itself in greater overdrafts at the bank and frequent trips to the DIY superstore.
I had to bite my tongue from asking what they're doing spending all this money when Armageddon is right around the corner.*
*we agreed a truce a couple of months ago....

Jesus said "I am the way, the truth and the life".
I think that pretty much covers it.

Interesting, but not authoritative.
But the view consistently offered by those with higher IQs than mine is that as you become better educated the more likely you are to be an atheist. I'm sure this hypothesis (or as I lovingly call them "blind guesses") is presented in printed publications written by scientists as hard fact.
Whether or not a scientist has any qualifications to comment on the existence of God throws open a whole new realm of discussion and debate. One prominent scientist in the UK has vehemently stated that God is a delusion and that children shouldn't be taught about God. He has also stated that scientists are mostly atheists and that those who say they aren't are likely to be lying.
So, by this standard - namely scientists aren't qualified to comment on God's existence - his words should carry neither weight nor validity.
Also, the fact that this survey was carried out in the early 1900s and then repeated in the 1990s shows that at least someone considered the premise to be worth looking into. Maybe the nature of the survey was flawed, maybe not, but that doesn't invalidate the survey having taken place, nor does it invalidate the results of the survey.
You see, if science has in fact proven beyond a doubt that there is no God, yet 40% of the men and women in the white lab coats who were polled for this survey are willing to state that they believe in God (remember, not a god, but God who answers prayers), then it would appear we're dealing with some sort of dichotomy among the Bunsen burners.
Also, claiming (as someone did earlier in the thread) that any scientist who believes the earth is 6000 years old isn't worth his/her salt as a scientist is a straw man argument.
