Progressive Rock Music?

i place a question mark on the thread title as i have never read a definition of this genre of rock music that seemed to fit the bill.

what is generally agreed is that it is a european musical phenomena that began in the late 60's and peaked in popularity in the early 70's though it has always had an audience and one which seems to be growing in popularity again.. my own definition is one that suggests: 'music in which the musicians can move from jazz to rock to pop to classical and back again with equal ease'.

i am sure that simplifies things.

People of our generation are accused of 'being stuck in the 70's'. I can but disagree. I am stuck in innovation and quality. Frankly, politically, musically and creatively the 60's and early 70's were by far the most interesting times that I have lived through, and I have a couple of decades to compare them with! That is not to say that there are not some stellar musicians out there, but few can fight the pimps and the Siren's call of a mortgage free life.

Jim Irvin and Colin McLear compiled a book called the Mojo Collection which seeks to collect together the most influential albums from the late 50's to the modern age. The book is interesting in that it avoids the superlatives, is incredibly accurate in its detail and reasoned in its approach. What is most interesting is that the years between 1965 and 1975 are represented not just in those years but in the music being produced by muscians of that era even now.

Here is Hatfield and the North in action not so long ago: Hatfield & The North. Never been a fan of Floyd I am afraid, at least not past the Syd Barrett days, though I do have all their work.

Yeah, Weather Report - a stunning band, especially in their original line-up. I saw them perform a number of times but thought they lost it a little in the disco era, trying to 'outfunk' the funks and never really recovered their musical equilibrium.

Lots of excellent stuff from Italy too with : Banco and PFM (Pete Sinfield from King Crimson was their lyricist on the English numbers) Their politics might not suit most on this Board, but they suit me.

That Darwinism may have played a role in the ideology of the national Socialists and that on that premise Darwin is to be reviled, is rather like saying that Enrico Fermi, who created the first nuclear chain reaction, was responsible for Hiroshima. A ridiculous viewpoint.

Survival of the fittest is a universal scientific truth and not an ideology. It is true for all types of life from bacteria to Elton John. That Darwin noted this fact does not mean that he endorsed the slaughter and enslavement of millions of people because a group of people decided to experiment on mankind with this universal truth, just as one cannot lay the use or misuse of nuclear fission at the feet of Fermi.

most of us are familiar with, or at least have heard of, friedrich nietzsche's virulent criticism of christianity: according to nietzsche the belief in, and desire for, "another (higher or future) world" and "eternal life" betrays a hatred of this world and real life, of power and beauty, of the animal and the "body," a "slave morality" which essentially consists in "resentment" against everything real, powerful, beautiful, etc.

christian "spirituality" is shameful "nihilism," nihilism in disguise, the central emblem of which is the cross, understood as the very negation of life, with the "will of power" and the cruel beauty it is made of.

nietzsche lumps together christianity and anarchism as expressions of the same basic rejection of reality.

It may sound arrogant or miserable depending on your standpoint, but I have actually become quite close to believing nothing as far as theories or ideas, in the usual sense of those words, are concerned. And at the same time I believe everything -- every star, cloud, tree, bug or pebble, every smile or tear, every word uttered or written... go figure.

That is where I am in my journey of stumbles also. It is place I would be glad to stay without complaint for the fleeting time that lies ahead of us all. In many ways it is where I began my journey before being interrupted by an arrogant desire to have answers.

I am who I am, and it is better to lose with passion and the identity of the self than to "win" and lose one's soul. I am "better", because I take the harder path, because it is the right one.

This sort of intellectual capitulation is fine if that is the path you wish to walk, it is your perogative, though be aware that often our own stupidity makes our path all the harder.

Your further illustrate my point.

I fought the fact because it did not fit my personal experience. I have traveled to S America many times, and have family there. The UN stat does not jibe with my empirical experience.

By your own admission, you are prepared to disagree with the World Health Organization and its tens of thousands of health specialists, The United Nations and all its resources and the White House Administration and all its resources, because during YOUR travels in South America YOU had a different experience from the rest of the World.

Can you not see that this is EXACTLY the point I am illustrating in my posts above regarding your prejudicial and muddled thinking when it disagrees with your own little paradigm. It is this sort of attitude that submerges you in the chaotic thinking of semi-education and so easily allows you to feel comfortable with ad hominem attacks rather than reasoned thinking.

You think with your heart Burn, which may make you an entertaining person, but it will never lead to a seasoned intellect and will more often than is comfortable see you bought down by far less active minds than your own.

Damning with faint praise?

Not damning, or praising. I am making a comment based on what I have read of your posts the past couple of months. The dichotomous nature of religious reasoning is one bought about by holding to believes that cannot be proved and yet being thoroughly convinced. This often spills over into every avenue of life. I will show you what I mean.

On another thread you chose to close a post with the comment, 'Burn, Who believes in Angels', or some such comment. On another thread when we were discussing world health statisitics and I posted World Health Organization figures that ranked the US 37th in the world rankings, you refused to accept the figure, one that is accepted by the US White House Administration as accurate, because it was drawn up by an organization that has affiliation with the UN. You fight against fact when it does not fit into your paradigm.

This sort of muddled and prejudicial thinking is what leads FunkyDerek to show puzzlement at how a person such as yourself, who obviously has a very good mind, can also express reasoning best suited to the tale end of a bottle of Scotch, or a Sunday sermon. Your repeated ad hominem attacks on Mr Dawkins, complete with silly pictures, is further evidence of this.

I'm disappointed with the odious glee that BurnTheShips seems to take at what he wrongly perceives to be an embarrassment for evolutionists.

Do not be too upset at the attitude of Burn The Ships. He likes to talk fast and furious but eventually comes to his senses. I am quite certain that he is subconciously terrified of losing his belief system, but is fighting the inevitable. ;)

Perry is another case altogether. Intellectually dishonest, arrogant in belief, steeped in a dismal agenda which has been drained of all reason, he stands as example to all religionists of what not to become. I suppose in that way he does have some use on the planet.
