well sometimes we are.. look we have the knowledge and experience to help a lot of people.must of us have one time been jw's and understand how many think.so lets not put them off by being too negative.. when we were witnesses most of us were quite happy .
we tried to be good people , to put into practise principles that many people think are good.
we did this sometimes even when we didn't want to , because we thought god would hold us accountable and because we cared for people .
As always Larc, you focus the true issues with great skill.

I am pretty sure we have not met, though we do seem to have crossed paths along the way.

the reality of impending death is our one certainty.
if we are fortunate enough to live for 70 years, we will have lived for 840 brief months.. the womb to the tomb is a rapid journey.
i once wandered through a cemetery in a town called rochester in the uk and always having a fascination for last words, i happened upon the c19th tombstone of a man who had been fatally struck while playing cricket!
PS - I will be awarding a prize for the best last words.
Here is one for You Know.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust,
Here lies You Know and his prophetic lust,
Just where he is preaching, who can tell,
Half-way to Heaven and half-way to Hell.

Sorry Fred,
It has to be in couplets. Your offering is just not poetic enough.

Hello,
The reality of impending death is our one certainty. If we are fortunate enough to live for 70 years, we will have lived for 840 brief months.
The womb to the tomb is a rapid journey.
I once wandered through a cemetery in a town called Rochester in the UK and always having a fascination for last words, I happened upon the C19th tombstone of a man who had been fatally struck while playing cricket! It read:
Here lies the bones of one, poor Louch,
A cricketer so staunch,
That vexed his hands should miss the ball,
He caught it in the paunch.
Now, if you were to write each others ‘last words’ what would we write; not our own I emphasize but each others?
Here is one for you Fred.
Here lies interred our Frederick Hall
who finally succumbed to his upward call,
his litter box holds little cheer,
save bones, and dust, and an apostates tear…

when i first came on a board like this about a year ago (h2o) im afraid that i came with some misconceptions, just like everyone else.
i pictured it as an amalgamation of misfits, malcontents, rebels, etc.
i suppose that is somewhat accurate, although not anywhere near the extent that i had imagined.
You are a good man Tom, with a good heart.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.

what method of teaching did he impart to the 1st century christians?
how did he say that we should worship his father jehovah?
Hello,
The Bible is not a book of science, or chronology, it is a book of ethics, and even then, ethics that are framed in the language and reality of the age in which they were written.
It does the Bible a disservice to drag it into the C21st and then attempt to bend it to suit our needs.
Think about it. The majority of the letters of Paul, Peter and John would not even have been written if the early Christian Church was not in turmoil and disunity. Did they ever envision that their letters would be being read and picked apart 2,000 years later? Of course not. They were the letters of the day, to Christians of the day. In a modern world they have to be interpreted and understood as such.
Think about it again. All the early Christians were expecting an apocalyptic event which would herald the coming of Christ to occur in their own time. Some of Christ’s own words seem to indicate that he did also. The C1st life of a Christian could be likened to pre 1975 JW’s, who lived for the moment in order to be prepared for their Armaggedon. There was no long term planning involved in their lives.
For example, I Thessalonians 5:3, has a declaration of ‘peace and security;’ being uttered. What evidence is there that this scripture applies beyond the fall of Jerusalem in 66-70AD? None but wishful thinking and a commendable desire to see peace on this Earth.
That scoundrel Augustine, with his Manichaestic leanings, single-handedly stamped his indelible mark on Western Christianity when he imbued in it the unhealthy chains of guilt complexes, from which to this day it has not been able to break. He drove Christianity along paths that it was never designed to walk. We compound the problem if we while walking along his paths then try to bend scripture to breaking point.
The Bible’s biggest enemies are its believers. Christianity is a living faith, not a faith tied to C1st thinking.
So what is the Bible? It is a behavioral manifesto culminating imho in the most elevated and beautiful sentiments in the ‘Sermon On The Mount’. Who can argue with the message of love, compassion and tolerance contained within those collected discourses. They move us to unimaginable heights of nobility and give us a sense of the potential for good within the human heart.

Hello,
One or two WTS Fredian slips :
Seek Those Rightly Disposed for Everlasting Life. - Any topic of conversation used in the house-to-house ministry should be introduced in a positive, pleasant way. But no one should use a shocking introduction, such as, "I have a message for you from outer space."........such an introduction might well make a householder wonder whether the Witness should be taken seriously or dismissed as quickly as possible.
The householder might also breath a sigh of relief, recognizing that the JW is unhinged after all.
w77 6/1 328 Combating Bible Illiteracy in France. - This sincere Catholic accepted a home Bible study and ended up by quitting the Catholic Church and resigning from his position as philosophy teacher in a Catholic school. He accepted a menial job, and he and his wife became baptized Witnesses at the Divine Sovereignty district assembly held in 1975. He concludes his report by saying: "Today, my mind is no longer polluted by Babylonian mysteries and philosophical gobbledygook.
A teacher whose mind was filled with Babylonian mysteries and philosophical gobbledygook was I suspect teaching under janitorial pretenses, imagine his poor students having to wipe the drool from his chin with his wizards robe.

Ahhh! Now I understand. Get a few crushed ones, warm them up and bingo, fermenting sheep. Anyway, what the hell is a ‘familylike’, some sort of Greek guitar?
Such instruction is not gained by delving into filthy and degraded perversions done in secret and then relating them publicly. The mind is not cleansed by feeding on filth, no more than a sow is washed by wallowing in the mire. Real Christians are neither prudes shocked by clean sex nor perverts stimulated by sexual immoralities. Their mind is open to clean instruction but closed to degrading obscenities.
OK folks, this way to the ‘Lash and Spittle’. Obviously Nathan, Fredian and You Know, had just returned home after a few jars of Guinness when they decided to get into that article.
Benefiting From Your God-given Conscience. - The elders in one congregation write: "In one wedding all the bridesmaids walked down the aisle fanning themselves. The next wedding had to outdo the first, so the bridesmaids walked down the aisle twirling umbrellas. The next had to be bigger and better; they wanted twenty bridesmaids and twenty ushers. The hall was starting to be used as a circus.
Just a quick note in reminder; Circus acts in Kingdom Halls are not merely restricted to weddings.
