Very good questions. It's doesn't make a bit of sense, does it? I think most JWs would have a cow if they knew the GB voted on these things, etc.
One would think that the Holy Spirit -- as they see it -- would be powerful enough to give them a clear decision on something. Since it's a scam, a man-made religion, it is what it is.

Being "at the top" is not a big deal to these folks. If you'll recall, Ray told us that they view the "Organization" as an entity, separate from them. While they run it, they individually view themselves as a small piece of the "arrangement".
Confronted with a life or death blood issue, a JW may choose death, and yet this doesn't open their eyes, or open the eyes of their loved ones, in many cases. A GB member casting a single vote in a weekly meeting is not necessarily going to awaken him. He sits down at that table, not even comprehending (as Ray says) that he IS the organization. He just sits down and fulfills a role that dozens of others before him did, with no problem.
Ray couldn't believe his eyes. He felt the full weight of it. He did snap. However, from his perspective, it was no big deal for most -- if not all -- of the others at that time.

at some point, there is a conscious decision to exchange the truth for the lie
Had I not been a JW for 23 years, a hardcore Kool-Aid drinking Bethelite, I might would agree. However, in my own case, I never once made a conscious decision to join (or remain in) a cult, something false. All of my Watchtower activities and support were done, believing 100% that I had the truth and was doing God's will.
So, for me, these twelve men are doing the same thing. Sure, just like the rank and file, they may differ on some minor point of dogma, but their belief in the overall concept that the organization is run by God is unwavering in my opinion. Moreover, it is the product of the Mind Control/Cult tactics put in motion before most of the current GB were born.

I'm one of those that believes that they do indeed believe they are God's channel. They arrive on the GB after decades of being indoctrinated. Ray's explanation of them being "captives of a concept" is eyewitness testimony that is not easily dismissed by me.
I also think David Koresh honestly believed he was the Messiah.

during that time, i did have a prescription drug problem following an injury.
I guess many (if not all) religions meet this criteria - don't they??
The logical conslusion of where you are headed is a position held by active JWs, namely: "If a destructive, mind control cult is God's Organization, then it is most appropriate to be in such a group."
It's a non-starter for those of us who have broken free of the bonds.

The guys at the top are "victims of victims", their minds having been controlled for (in most cases) decades -- before they became the leaders.
As you point out, there is no evidence that it's an intentional implementation of something they knowingly believe to be harmful. They believe they are carrying out God's will. When you analyze the WT teachings and the internal pressures put upon members, they align with Robert J. Lifton's research. The two links I provided earlier are a fascinating read. They explain how Lifton's criteria are present in WT doctrine/policies, etc. The end result is of importance, not the motives, intention or sincerity of the leaders. The religious leaders that send suicide bombers into crowded pizzerias believe they are instruciing their followers according to God's will. We're concerned about the reality, not the motives and intentions.

most jws i knew had some unexplainable ailment or 2. and a number suffered from depression!!

Eventually, whether they want to admit it or not, the things they were promised on the front end do not pan out.
Surely this has an impact on some.
