Bang,
Did you write that, or is it a quote from someone else?
Hmmm
just something light and spiritual i thought of after feeling good about a compliment on a different post.
no offence i & p, thanks for encouragement - i just thought about this teaching, that's all.
most people don't live aware lives.
Bang,
Did you write that, or is it a quote from someone else?
Hmmm
as a disclaimer, i am an ex-jw (da'd) for about 15+ years, so i really haven't kept up on what's going on in bethel (come to think of it i wasn't really interested in it when i was a jw!
recently, however, one of my relatives (current jw) commented that, although my nephew had applied to bethel (oh what a privilege!
), he was basically told he wasn't needed at this time because they aren't "mailing out the publications" there like they used to.
Probably 10-15 years ago the printing overseer at Bethel did a cost analysis and determined that it would be cheaper to outsource the printing. I guess the free labor couldn't overcome the built-in inefficiencies to their system.
I remember reading this in the mid-90s, but can't remember the source. Also, I believe Ray Franz talks about it in ISoCF.
Hmmm
i'm curious to see if anyone here has any major anxiety disorders and how it affects their lives.
as a semi-confession, i think i may have something of this sort, but i'd like a comparison first.
being a male, i never go to the doctors unless my leg is falling off, so i don't just want to go to a doctor to medicate a problem that could be overcome in other ways.
"Being a male, I never go to the doctors unless my leg is falling off, "
Ahhh, so you're one of those sissified males. Real men don't go to the Doctor until after their leg has fallen off, and duct tape wouldn't hold.

this is a request to get some assistance in preparing an estimate of how many jehovah's witness children leave the religion during or after adolescence.
i know the figure is substantial based on my own observations, but we need some way to document it.
please put on your thinking cap and publish your ideas here.
crawdad, check out his homepage. It should answer all your questions.
I would try to find a large group of people who have left the religion, and ask the following questions.
1. Were you raised "in the truth" (born to Witness parents) ____________
2. Were you baptized? __________ If so, at what age? __________
3. Are you still an active Witness? ___________
4. Did you leave the Witness religion? If so, at what age? ___________
5. If you've left, do you plan on returning to the JWs? ____________
Discount all responses that were not raised as JWs, and were baptized after the age of majority.
Discount all responses that are still Witnesses, or plan to return.
Get some bean counter to crunch the numbers for you.
The really tough part will be finding a large group of ex-JWs to survey.

i'm sorry that due to "technical difficulties', last weekend's poll did not appear, but thanks to all those who enquired about why it was not posted.
glad you're enjoying them!
so, time to put your feet up, so to speak, and have some fun with this weekend's poll.
I didn't notice it, because I was already fading away.
But some time in early 2001, my mother tried to convince me to attend the meeting with her, (it was the COs visit). She said, "They're going to have new light on the 1914 Generation..."
I read a few weeks later here that the CO was five years late.
Hmmm
to golflovers.
i just had to write it.
today i holed in one on my local.
Wow Idaho, very cool!
And here I didn't even think they had grass in Norway
Hmmm
on another thread someone asked about "the un thing".
i didn't want to hijack that thread, so here is the reader's digest condensed version.
the "un thing" in a nutshell: .
Realist,
Are you asking why the WT really wanted membership, or why the UN would allow them after 70 years of bad-mouthing?
The real reason the WT wanted to be associated was probably for political clout. When joining the DPI, they could choose from a number of specific areas (e.g. education). They chose Human Rights. They probably wanted to use their affiliation to gain favor in parts of Africa and Europe. For example, they've been petitioning the French government for recognition for years, and would have loved to point to ten years working with the UN's Human Rights branch as proof that they weren't a looney cult.
When the UN was contacted about the way they'd been characterized by the WT in their literature, they said they had no idea that was the case.* They did convene a meeting to discuss the situation, and the WT's future involvement with them when the society contacted them and withdrew. Basically, they disassociated themselves before they could be disfellowshipped.
*As a side point. I find it pretty funny that they talk about their great preaching work, and used to say it was pivotal in the separating of sheep from goats, yet most worldly people could only point out one or two JW teachings; and until last year, the UN was unaware of the things the JWs had been saying about them since before their inception. 125 years of preaching and the only thing people know about them is they don't celebrate holidays and frequently predict the end of the world. Some legacy.

the "un thing" in a nutshell: .
On another thread someone asked about "the UN thing". I didn't want to hijack that thread, so here is the Reader's Digest Condensed Version.
The "UN thing" in a nutshell:
Acronyms Galore: In 1991 the WTS applied to be a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) associated with the UN's Department of Public Information (DPI). The application was signed by a member of the Governing Body and another Bethel Heavy. The application was approved in 1992.
Supporting the Charter of the Wild Beast: NGOs had to agree to uphold the UN charter, and promote the UN in their literature. They had to reapply every two years and supply proof that they were doing this. (If you look at Awake! magazines from that period, you may notice a softer stance being taken against the UN, and promoting their food and educational programs.)
Here's Betting they won't be quoting The Guardian Anytime Soon: In 2001 a group of rabid apostates found the WTS listed on the UN site and started proclaiming it to the heavens. Some news sources, particularly The Guardian (a London newspaper that the society often quotes) picked up on the story.
New Light: 3.92348 milliseconds after it became public knowledge that the WTS had been whoring with Babylon The Great for a decade, the society wrote to the UN requesting to be dropped from the list.
Plus They Validate Parking!: When asked, the society said they joined the DPI as an NGO to gain access to the Dag Hammarskjld Library--the famed "Library Card" excuse. They later said that the requirements to support the UN were not in place when they applied, but were snuck in some time later (1994 is usually the date they give).
Demon-Possesed Hackers: The average R&F said that none of it was true: Hackers must have broken into the UN website and slipped the WTS into the list
Do a search on this site for UN, or click the stats link and you'll see two UN threads among the most active threads of all time on this board.

my sister sent me this article from the june issue of ladies home journal.
here are some excerpts... .
the daddy difference .
(ie: seeling off my guns to have enough money to buy her first Prom dress. Then, I told her it was to be able to pay bills as I knew she wouldn't want me to and would have done without the dress).
You're a good man, Charlie Brown!
.
not a bad start!.
first twenty-five minutes; england 2, denmark 0. come on england!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where does the US stand, now that they've backed in to the second round?
PS Is it true that if five goals are scored (by both teams combined) they call off the rest of the game and have a global day of celebration? A football/soccer fan told me this, but I think he was just yanking my chain.
Hmmm
