Field service during the district convention

i remember back when the convention used to be four days, and there was no afternoon session on friday(or was it thursday?).

instead we were supposed to go out in field service in the afternoon.

they did this up until about the early to mid-80's.

Yes, in strange cities and even stranger territories. Los Angeles territory in very bad area which was about to be torn down. In New Mexico out in the dusty sun baked desert...one brother in our group got bit by a dog and his pants chewed and torn. However, the out of town DC's constituted our annual summer family vacation. AH, motel with a pool! Sometimes we would take the train -- coach -- 3 days and 2 nights cross country. Sometimes my Dad would drive -- Wts and Awakes in the car windows, my younger sister, grandmother and I in the back seat with the ripe bananas, and no air conditioning -- Summer in the Mid-West!

Catholic Funeral - Rosary and Viewing

tonight i attended a rosary following the viewing.

it was held at the funeral home.

the rosary is a series of prayers led by a priest.

Tonight I attended a Rosary following the viewing. Tomorrow will be the funeral followed by the burial and then a reception.

It was quite interesting and very different from JW funerals. It was held at the funeral home. The viewing was open casket. The rosary is a series of prayers led by a Priest. Then a little time inviting anyone to come up and speak about the deceased. All the time the casket was open. It was not sad at all. Actually quite uplifting. Anyone was invited to get up and say something if they wished. (My husband did. He has known this person since childhood.)

Tomorrow will be the church funeral. That should be interesting as well.

Thank you everyone! You have answered my question. When I was in, it was so different. It was quite a thrill to have the Pres. speak at a major assembly/convention.

By the way, slimboyfat, what did you mean am I related to Noah Bad Boy? I don't think so. Please enlighten me. I must say that your name sounds like you may be a "Blues" lover. If so, so am I.

What do you think about this letter to the JC???

hi guys and gals... you've probably read my earlier post regarding the prodigal son question and how the jc sent me packing... well, after talking with a good friend of mine i decided to move a new cong.

where the elders have known me for many years and actually appreciate me as a person... at first i was planning on handing this letter in person so i went but their meeting time had changed so i called one of the elders in my reinstatement jc and asked him for the meeting days but he said 'it would be better if i mailed it' to which i replied 'do you just not want me around your congregation, is that it?

he said again it would just be better to mail it again and left it at that.

Although I do not attend meetings and have issues with many of the things about JW, WTBTS, etc. , I appreciate and support others who have different ideas. We must all reach our own place, our own decisions. What is right for one, may not be right for another. With that said, I will quote a brother who used to say, regarding the "truth", the "Organization", etc.:

"We can afford to be wrong" -- I have heard religious belief compared to life insurance policies -- there are many to choose between, pick the best for you. Some may think this is a cop-out. I don't know. I have never personally seen, witnessed or experienced the things one is supposed to have that comes with a religious belief.

Beat to Hell.......were you as a child as a JW?

there was a scripture about a rod.......it seemed to be in every other watchtower.....it was an excuse to beat children.

i was a little girl.

i was beat with my pants down every time they could.

I am so touched and yet infuriated at the same time. Can't something be done??? I would champion such an effort!!! Now the laws so favor the children, I wonder what is the current situation with JW kids being "beaten" etc.? Are they told to keep silent? As for the little ones, they cannot be expected to sit quietly for 1, let alone, 2 hours. It is unreal.

david splane is a member of the governing body of jehovah's witnesses.. he became a full time minister in september 1963. a graduate of the 42nd class of gilead, the jehovah's witness missionary school, he served as a missionary in senegal, africa, then for 19 years as a travelling overseer in canada.

he and his wife, linda, have been at bethel (jehovah's witness headquarters) in the united states since 1990, where he has worked in the service and writing departments.

since 1998, he had been a helper to the writing committee.
