Hello Everyone...Just Joined Today
by DarioKehl ini've been reading this thread for some time and finally had the opportunity to create an account.
i am anxious to meet you all and have a support group/active audience over the next crucial months and years following.
background: long-time doubter, giving way to frustration and skepticism beginning about 10 years ago and finally to total admission that this is a cult and that atheism is the way to go.

As far as "admitting it to myself," well... with that comes the difficulty of facing the fact that this life is all we have. It's kind of depressing at first and I was upset with myself for discovering this. NOW what??? I have nothing to hope for after this??? Yikes! The idea of never seeing dead loved ones was also very tough. But, something amazing happened...the anxiety and panic attacks that bothered me through the teens and 20s went away! I think the skeptic 9-year-old was clamoring to escape this cage he was in and the fairy-tale version of "happily ever after" in a peaceful new world never seemed real to me. This manifested itself in severe depression/anxiety. Why couldn't I buy in to this idea when so many intelligent adults around me believed it enough to bang on people's doors and try to convince them TOO??
The above paragraph struck a chord with me. I too suffered from severe anxiety/panic attacks years ago and only after I came to terms with the thought that the Watchtower Organization wasn't what they claimed to be (God's chosen representatives) did they cease.
All the time spent suffering from those panic/anxiety attacks,(some felt like they were going to turn into heart attacks with my chest beating so hard) evidently were triggered from an intense internal struggle because of me not wanting to admit fault with the organization. I was brought up in an atmosphere of where you didn't question the WatchTower. If you had an issue with something you just put it on a shelf in your mind, or to quote one brother"put it on the back-burner".
Very nice opening thread from you and I look forward to seeing more of them in the future.
Best wishes on your "Reasoning book" project.

This got me thinking about what it really means to be a "Family"
by StoneWall ini came from what many might call a "normal" or average family.. a father, mother, brother and sisters.. as i got older i got married, then we had a son and felt like we were like any other family.. it was all i ever knew and as far as i could tell it was what constitutes a family.. as i've gotten older i've seen that not all "families" would necessarily fit the preconceived mold i had of what it meant to be a family.. the following short video (only 3 minutes) is very well articulated in what it means to be a family.. the speaker is zach wahls a 19 year old student at the university of iowa.. his words have much wisdom for one so young.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsqqk2vuf9q.

This young man speaks very well -- way better than I could.
This is what got me about how young he is and yet can articulate so fluently.

Same with me Psac. As far as a child needing a mother and a father it used to seem so simple to me.
But as you can see by the way he presents himself as well as his arguments to the Iowa legislature, he seems to have done very well for himself without the benefit of a male role model in the home.
And I sure don't have all the answers but I guess only time will tell.
So I'll agree with you on that I just don't know.

Moving On Means Never Speaking Out Need Help With Research...
by Tuesday inhey there everyone!.
i've been in a discussion with a few ex-jws about how to properly "move on" from being a jw.
they are saying that to truly "move on" it means you leave it totally behind you and stop dwelling/talking about being a jw.
-

You could always say something like, "Well why don't we just move on from discussing the sin in the garden of Eden. Why does JW's and other religions not move on and keep rehashing that tale that happened (or didn't happen) so long ago?"
Why do we constantly hear at meetings or church about David's adultery with Bath-Sheba? Why doesn't everyone just move on and not focus on that?
Flip the tables on them and make them explain why its OK for them to rehash old wrongs and yet they feel you can't.
Edited to add: Actually if you take the whole bible as a fact, then its one long story of not being able to "move on" and we've been paying for it ever since.

I came from what many might call a "normal" or average family.
A father,mother,brother and sisters.
As I got older I got married, then we had a son and felt like we were like any other family.
It was all I ever knew and as far as I could tell it was what constitutes a family.
As I've gotten older I've seen that not all "families" would necessarily fit the preconceived mold I had of what it meant to be a family.
The following short video (only 3 minutes) is very well articulated in what it means to be a family.
The speaker is Zach Wahls a 19 year old student at the university of Iowa.
His words have much wisdom for one so young.

Did anyone else find this intriguing/fascinating about this year 2011 and the year of your birth?
by StoneWall inby now you've probably seen the following dates tossed around that will happen in this year:.
but something i wasn't aware of and my brother-in-law showed me about the year 2011:.
take the last 2 digits of the year of your birth and add it to how old you are/will be in this year(2011) and it should always equal 111.. to illustrate, i was born in 1967 and will be 44 this year.

By now you've probably seen the following dates tossed around that will happen in this year:
1/1/11
1/11/11
11/1/11
11/11/11
But something I wasn't aware of and my brother-in-law showed me about the year 2011:
Take the last 2 digits of the year of your birth and add it to how old you are/will be in this year(2011) and it should always equal 111.
To illustrate, I was born in 1967 and will be 44 this year. So the equation would look like this 67+44 =111.
The only exceptions I've found are those born in the year 2000 and later and theirs should work out to be 11 instead of 111.
Try it with your family/friends birthdates and see what you come up with.
I tried it out with mine.
My son born in 1989. He will be 22 in 2011. So his is 89+22=111
And yeah I know this isn't earth shattering news or anything of the sort, and it boils down to simplicity, but sometimes the simple things in life can be so much fun when you got grown ups crowded around a table trying to find an exception to this. hehee
Anyways I hope everyone is doing great so far in this year of 2011 and that it gets even better for all.

jmorgan74, I knew a former witness a few years ago whose name is very similar to your handle on here.
Any chance you're from N.C. or spent some time there?
And I see that was your second post even though you've been a member since Oct.
So I'll give you a belated WELCOME to the forum. :)

suzanne,
hi and welcome to the board.
As far as demons or spirits go, I wouldn't be to terrified of them.
I've spent over 40+ years on this mudball planet and still haven't seen a demon, angel, ghost or any other spirit.
(and I've been actively searching, even so called "haunted" houses)
But if you do happen to see/find one could you come back on this thread and let us know?
I'd love to come and see/witness it for myself.
