Education Issues.......Help!

i was out last night with a jw but who is not attending.

he is in his early 30s, is on his second marriage but now separated.

i've known him for 15 yrs or so.

I am 32 and returned to college 2 years ago. Going back to school was the best decision I ever made. I started out at a junior college and then transferred to a state university. This was a great way to save money since in California community colleges are far less expensive than universities. I got my associates degree then completed transfer requirements and am now working on my bachelors degree.

It is never to late to go back. You meet people of all ages and I am not the oldest person in any of my classes. I sometimes wish that I had finished college right after highschool but I have also noticed that being an older student has it's advantages. 1. I am much more serious about my education and appreciate it's value (especially since I am paying for it). 2. I have a clearer idea of who I am and what my goals are than when I was 18. 3. I am more self confident and find it easier to meet people than when I was younger (I have found that even the 18-20's students are easy to get along with and they have always welcomed me in their study groups ((someones got to do the studying )) 4. I have a larger knowledge base and more experience, I am not shy about answering professors questions (most of my instructors appreciate having older students and many of them returned to school as older adults themselves).

Many colleges have reentry programs to help support returning older students. Many have childcare available on campus. If your friend is in the united states he should fill out a FAFSA form (federal application for financial student aid or something like that). You can even fill it out on line. It is free and it is the first step in finding out what programs you qualify for that might make going back easier. Some examples include free grants (you don't have to pay these back) Loans (some are interest free until you graduate or quit school) and works study awards where you can work on campus or locally for non profits and earn money for school. Anyone who is interested in attending college in the USA during the Fall 2002/Spring 2003 school year should file their FAFSA before March 2, 2002 ( if you don't it is still not too late but this is the best time to file it). Well I could go on and on but I will quit now and if anybody has any specific questions post them and I will get back to you personally.

I went to the site and read all the way through it. My impression is that it is a spoof . Yes much of what it says is similar to the JW propaganda and mindset but I beleive this site was meant as a joke.

Mmm...college

thanks to the supportive words and encouragement of many here, i am now officially a student at arizona state university.. i just went to campus, and got a hard copy of the general catalog at the book store, and i went to the computer lab to setup my access.

just seeing the young and old, people of all sorts of ethnic backgrounds, milling around campus, all engaged in the wonder of learning, made me take pause and think about how silly the jw prohibition on college is, and how completely a learning environment can shatter the witness world view.

part of me wanted to cry, and another part of me was intrigued by the hot young college chicks...heh.. it is wonderful to be able to make choices for oneself.. any recommendations for my first course?

Congratultions Mike,
Tommorow is my first day at Sac State. I attended a local junior college for a couple of years and transferred after deciding to major in Sociology. Just as a suggestion one of my favorite courses was "critical thinking" it gave me new perspectives and helped me to feel comfortable with not knowing all the answers. Another tip for choosing a course is to go to the book store and look at the texts to see which ones interest you. I have found that most professors who have written their own text books are wonderful instructors (they tend to stay on schedule and are very passionate about the courses they teach). You may not feel ready to take comparative religion at this time but don't rule it out completely it was a real eye opener for me. Best Wishes in your pursuits.

I had the CO and DO and their wives over for lunch. I had prepared a nice meal and had several drink choices available. The DO's wife informed me that she only drinks tea and she had brought her own. I quickly heated her some water and brought it to the table only to be told in the snottiest tone "I don't drink microwaved water, boil it on the stove".

I don't drink coffee or tea but to this day I have wondered does the way you heat the water really make a difference?

blood cards for assembly entrance?

in a recent post someone mentioned that at an assembly or convention in the u.k. they would not let him in until he showed either a blood card or convention badge.

the person then named some elders he knew and was finally allowed in.

is this typical at u.k. conventions?

Your right, here in California we did have to show blood cards in order to get the Proclaimers book. I don't remember ever needing it just to get in though. But things are different everywhere thank you for sharing your experiences.

for me, the word was "loving".. great "loving" kindness.. great undeserved "loving" kindness!.

disfellowshipping is a "loving" provision.. when the wtbts want their accolytes to swallow another bitter pill, another restriction, another rebuke, another demand on time, the buzz word is "loving".. the "loving" word, is, to the average jw, the same as the mccabe nod is to the salesman.

the mccabe nod is used by salesman all the time to get the prospective customer to agree to something that he doesn't care for too much.

Is this typical at U.K. conventions? what about U.S. and other countries, are their any other experiences out there like this? sorry I cannot find the post but I told my friend (still in the org) about that and she was apalled she asked me to find out if it is the policy or just a fluke. Thanks for your help.
