i'm one of those ones who drifted away before getting to heavily in...thank god...but upon arrival in my new house i found a letter, a hand written letter in my letterbox from a local witness saying they had called around a few times and no one had been in, had a special message etc etc and gave an address which is a kingdom hall should the residents wish to contact her.
is it usual to write such a long hand written letter??
i think it's a bit strange.
I was one of those weirdos that loved to write letters!
Pioneering meant lots of NHs- very boring. I used to enjoy rounding out my 90 hours by actually expressing myself in a letter (I didn't copy them, each one was original). I liked to think that some lonely or grieving person might read one and feel better. <sigh> Guess I was a dreamer...

with the us economy tanking and on the verge of a major collapse if the right steps aren't taken, the average person is probably a little concerned.
i haven't seen anything like a panic yet, but it has been a source of discussion with collegues and neighbors.
to be honest, i'm a bit worried.

I start my 50th year this October. I was thinking of celebrating once a month with the moon cycles, culminating on my 50th in 2009. Maybe you can do some kind of moon ceremony- the full moon starts Oct 14 20:03 this year... enjoy it on both sides of your 50th!

I go there several times a week- but only for the few items I like. We've compared TJ with others, but we're all really picky in my family- we prefer name brand spaghetti sauce, noodles, bread, salsa, chili, popcorn, crackers, yogurt, mac&cheese, etc. so I have to go to Safeway for those. Besides- hamburger, tri-tip, pot roast and such are always cheaper when on sale at SW.
The things I only buy at TJ's are: Butter (the best!), black forest ham, sliced deli cheeses, french bread, spicy hummus (Mmmmm), 2buck chuck, TJ beer, coffee, fruit, vegies, and frozen wild blueberries. (Actually, I'm eating a Black bean& cheese burrito this very minute!!)

Drugs can lessen the cognitive dissonance a dub feels from all the doublespeak and disappointments. This is good for the Borg. They used to discourage psychiatry till they realized that most psychiatrists are just drug pushers. Lots of people I knew in the hall were on some sort of mood altering substance. What they don't want you to do is to talk about any issues. They just want you on drugs.
From plot summary of the movie THX 1138: "In the underground city, society controls all life, all citizens are drugged to control their emotions and their behavior and sex is a crime." Excellent movie to watch post-dub.

I've been faded about 2 years, and there was a family that continued to come over to hang for the first year- then all of a sudden they stopped! Very strange. Maybe our hall had some 'special' talks...?

And yes, I'd love to write more later. Four years ago I had money and was attending several therapy sessions each week- now I'm broke and really miss talking to somebody. And JWD is free!! Woo hoo!!
To answer ataloa's question: Yes, this was my first exposure to any religion- except when I was 7 years old I went with a friend to her Catholic mass. She told me to go up to the priest to accept the wafer, but I didn't know what to do when I got up there and I could tell the guy was really irritated at me. I felt ashamed. This is a powerful memory for me... maybe that's why I felt so much better going to the meetings where the older men fawned over me and I wasn't put in a position to embarass myself. (I've always been extremely sensitive.)
At the time my father was an atheist. My mother was agnostic, sending away for 8-foot high cardboard pyramids to set up in our living room so we could walk under them and get the good vibes 'just in case'. Both pretty much hated religion. My great-grandma taught me the 'Now I lay me down to sleep...' which I considered quite morbid, so I liked it. She also scared me to death by talking about 'World War 3' coming anytime now. I thought about it every day. This must have contributed to my relief at 'learning' that Jehovah was taking care of world conditions and I didn't have to worry.
That's about the only exposure I ever had.
