Yes, I speak in a very general sense - the creation of money divorced from productive economic activity...

hoser,
Yes, I guess the same concerns are at work. In Zimbabwe , the FRN or Euro are viewed as preferable when the Zimbabwe dollar (now suspended due to hyperinflation) is the alternative.
The thing is, the issues that torpedoed the Zimbabwe dollar are still very much real and in play for the FRN and the Euro. There's nothing 'hard' about the FRN except a military that can topple foreign governments and the US Government's willingness to use it. -

Point of interest, R. Paul is not an advocate of re-linking the dollar to gold, per se.
He's an advocate of legalizing alternate currency, to compete side-by-side with FRN. Presumably, a new legal currency would be commodity based, in some fashion, giving us savers a place to store our purchasing power, while the FRNs are inflated into oblivion... -

Would You Listen To A Prayer From A JW And Say Amen If They Said A Prayer In Your Presence?
by minimus inmy mom has had visits from various jws and they have asked her if they could say a prayer before they left.
i respectfully listened to the prayers while i was visiting and might silently say amen if i felt the prayer was appropriate for my mom.. i'm just curious, how would you handle this type of situation?.

I had a very dear JW grandparent die recently.
The Memorial Service contained a beautiul EULOGY to their life and personality. I was happily...shocked!
Of course, at the end was the 'reminder', 'plea', what-have-you...to get right with God, as my grandparent did. But it was far from heavy-handed advertisement we have growm accustomes to in the KH. It was more of an obligatory gloss-over, if anything.
This one elder....I don't know why he did what he did. He broke from the script, and did an absolutely wonderful thing for my family.
I, of course, have different opinions concerning JW doctrine/beliefs - but at the concluding prayer, I said 'AMEN'. And I meant it. And I'd do it again. -

Minumim wage may go to $10 per hour...
by darthfader ini understand the reasons for the desire to raise the minimum wage, but as a small business owner, i'll have to raise prices to keep my margins profitable.
a 30% hit is pretty substantial.. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/07/business/bill-pushes-for-increase-in-wages.html.

Why all this farting around with these piecemeal increases? Why not just make it somewhere from $15 to $20 bucks per hour and guarantee decent wages for everyone employed?

A Moment Of Truth For 'Illuminati' Types!
by metatron insometimes i post here because i don't know where else i should post, as to odd or unusual ideas.
there seem to be quite a lot of people on the internet who zealously believe that the world is covertly ruled by some conspiracy or masonic lodge or bilderberg group or intelligent reptiloid aliens who dress up as the british royal family ( i imagine an alien complaining, 'why do i have to be queen elizabeth?').
in other words, a bunch of powerful people who control everything.. well, it seems to me that we are approaching a moment in which we will see just how much control any such group really has.

Not to mention, this goes along way in explaining why every decision made regarding these instutions just further commits to stepping off the cliff.
We sit here like buffoons and shake our heads and scream: 'Don't they see they're committing suicide?! This can't continue forever! Don't they see it?!'
Um, yeah...they do. It's intentional.

Met,
You seem to be resting upon the presumption that such 'Illuminati' would be/are using existing mechanisms and structures to wield and increase their power. Therefore, we can see that the visible life span of these institutions are quite limited, so why would people bent on power employ broken tools....is that a fair paraphrase?
I am challenging the first presumption, that any such group plans to use the existing structures and mechanisms. There is enough of a dependent class of humanity that upon the failure of these existing institutions, will wholly attach themselves to that which rises in their stead. Get it? It's not about the banks and goverments you see now.
It's about what fills the vacuum after these fall.

Association: Am i being lied to?
by roxanesophia ini don't hesitate to bring up with the girl i study with, my criticisms of the religion, and one of those is the association.
i keep reading on here that jw's don't make friends outside the cult, and this is what i used as an excuse for stepping further away from being baptized.
she tells me it's not true, and they can have what ever friends they want.

I'll preface this with an apology, if it's out of line, but I feel that the question has been begged...
roxanesophia: What exactly is it you're looking for in life that you think these people might have? Any answers they claim to provide about anything at all is subjected to serious scrutiny on this very board. See for yourself if their canned answers hold up under fire.
Seriously, ask yourself, what they have to offer that you lack. Do you need other people to tell you how to run your life? What to think?
Take note of people born into this cult, who only offer their genuine experiences (without telling you what to do!). I personally know the 'dirty laundry' of 40-50% of a large Witness congregation, thanks to certain family connections. If you could just know the magnitude of the mental health problems these people have; the pills they throw down...
You would see these people in their fucked up, (mostly) self-inflicted misery and realize: they have nothing to offer.
If they had something great, wouldn't their lives be better? Wouldn't they be more prosperous? Happier?
Take some time and find out from yourself why you even travelled this far down a road that takes you nowhere. You're looking for something. Whatever you determine it to be - there is a better place to find it than from the Witnesses.

The Generation(s) That Wasted Their Lives
by undercover ingrowing up as a jw, you see the world differently than most everyone else.
you see the world as something that is going to end very soon.
all that we know will be gone by the time we're adults.. when we were young, we were living in the last days and were expecting armageddon before we grew old.

Great thread. Thanks for sharing these thoughts. I've had much of these, myself.
It's correct, that, as a 'born-in', the world-view that is foisted upon you is...um...disfunctional. And this is what I see as the great hurdle that the born-in mind must overcome. The born-in must find a way to discard the JW worldview before too much time and emotion has been invested in supporting it.
Once that inflection point point has been reached, all the exposed lying, all the false prophecies, all the non-sensical doctrine...none of it matters. Because now it's an emotional decision.
BBro sizes it up very well. Although I would offer that choosing to remain in the JW Org can be anything but the 'easy option'. The life of the devout witness has plenty of obligation and hardships. Maybe easier in the sense that if you stay in, you don't have the 'burden' of thinking for yourself, making your own decisions, and fully bearing the consequences - the 'burden' of free and thinking human beings.
